And there is no getting away from it really

I feel once you have kids, it doesn't matter whether you're 15 or 50, that's when you need to grow up, but I'm not sure if that's the kind of thing you mean? Being "sensible"?. So the average probably is 30. There are people in their 40s living like some of us did as teenagers, and enjoying freedom from no kids and that's fine if it's their choice. That said, when you look at pictures from about 60 years ago, most adults dressed/acted the same whether they were 20 or 50.
And before anyone says there's parents who act like teenagers who always put themselves first, yes, that's true.

70 is pushing it for middle aged

Hahaha! Yes I suppose it is. The thing is, I'm 68 - and my definition of middle-aged has changed as I've got older. "Old" is always going to be defined as "older than me"! 😂

I remember, when I was about 50, laughing at my mum who at age 84 didn't want to join a local lunch club group for older people. She said she didn't want to go there because it was "full of old people". Many of the members were actually younger than she was, but she didn't identify herself as belonging in the same category. I now understand exactly how she felt.

I’m 47.

If I was middle aged at 30, I must be due to die shortly, no?

No dear, you're just really really shit at maths 😂

You gonna live to 110? Impressive.

There is a very real chance that some people alive now will make it to 150, with recent advances in science.
You scoff at 110, but I have a neighbour who is 110. The number of people reaching 100 is growing faster than any other age group and has doubled in the last 20 years.
There is a projection that close to 20% of those born in the next 20 years or so will make it past 100.

tofumad · 22/04/2026 23:26

What? I'm 61 and thinking I might just about be middle aged! Well, I'm not serious. but my mother is 91 so 30 seems almost really young. Absolutely definitely not middle aged.

PleasantPedant · 22/04/2026 17:10

Middle-aged doesn't mean half-way through your life. It is the years between being young and being old.
It's 45- 67 (ish)

Yes! I don't see why this is so difficult for people.

When do you stop being young and start being old

TeflonBoot · 22/04/2026 23:48

Fuck me, if middle aged is 30, then Ive got a year left. Best start planning my funeral.

TwistedWonder · 22/04/2026 23:49

Inevergotthatfar · 22/04/2026 23:50

You're wrong but why do you care about this? There are honestly far worse things.

ComedyGuns · 22/04/2026 23:52

Gosh no! My life literally started at 30!

ComedyGuns · 22/04/2026 23:52

Gosh no! My life literally started at 30!

Why are you equating being middle aged with being past it?

I don't think 30 is middle aged, I think it's 35-60, but why can't your life take off and be it's best in middle age?

Is this why people get offended at being called middle aged and think it's some kind of insult, because they think it means they can't have be living their best life 🤔

AnotherName2025 · 23/04/2026 00:30

Plumblossomsbloom · 22/04/2026 23:05

That doesn't have anything to do with it. Adult is 18+ and child is under 18. 100 years old is still adult. You don't stop being an adult when you hit middle age. You stop being considered young when you hit middle age.

People can delude themselves all they want but 40, 50 etc isn't young. It doesn't matter if people feel young still, people feel all kinds of things that aren't relevant to anything. We're not talking feelings, but statistics. People's fertility is declining after 35, their metabolism slowly changing which is why there's so many overweight even when eating reasonably healthy who were slim in their youth despite terrible diets full of junk, fine lines start on the face even if you can't see them unless close up. People are out of their youth and all grown up by the time they're 35, they're entering their middle years, ergo they are middle aged 🤷

Disagree.

'adult' is a stage between 'young adult' & middle aged.

How is this even going to work in terms of the planet and it's resources? We're barely hanging on as it is. "Computer says no" every time someone needs old age care from the council because they're alive but bedridden/doolally, there's not enough budget, so how we supposed to add in 20% living to 150?

"They" say with global warming lots of the planet is set to become uninhabitable. So what is the plan? Treble the people (the ones already there, the displaced ones and the new wave of ultra old ones) living in half the space? If that happens were not going to be sparing any thoughts about who is middle aged and who isn't, we'll all be worrying if someone behind us is going to hit us over the head with a rock so they can steal our sandwich because there's not enough food to go around.

There'll be anarchy, civil wars, society will collapse and we'll all start eating each other (except the vegans, I guess they'll be first type of human to die off from starvation).

If there's too many people and we've eaten all the plants does that also mean the earth's atmosphere will become toxic to us because there's no plants to make any more oxygen? So we're all going to die regardless of what age we are? So nobody will be living to 150 because we'll all be extinct then 🤔

We're all doomed 😆

Young and old are subjective IMO. My Grandad thinks I'm really young, because he's 50 years older than me. My niece loves to tell me I'm ancient because she's 8.

FrauPaige · 23/04/2026 02:22

50 is the new 30.

But debt, a massive mortgage, and a relationship in which partners are measured on utility can make a 30-something feel like they are middle aged.

BeLemonDeer · 22/04/2026 17:03

Well, yes there is, as it’s entirely incorrect. It’s 50yrs plus, although it could be said there is a bit of individual variation, and I’d class some people late 40’d as middle aged and that some people early 50’s had not yet reached it.

But, 30yo. Nope. Most people don’t even start thinking of kids until after 30yo.

PollyBell · 23/04/2026 03:57

So middle meaning life expectancy these days is 60?

PolkaDotPorridge · 23/04/2026 06:39

Of course thirty isn’t middle aged. How ridiculous 🤣

LemonTyger · 23/04/2026 06:41

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 22/04/2026 22:55

Or if you understand that you don’t go from ‘young adult’ to ‘middle aged’

  • Infant/Baby (0-1 year)
  • Toddler (1-3 years)
  • Preschooler/Child (3-9 years)
  • Pre-teen/Tween (10-12 years)
  • Teenager/Adolescent (13-17 years)
  • Young Adult (18-25 years)
  • Adult (26-39 years)
  • Middle-Aged Adult (40-59 years)
  • Senior/Elderly (60+ years)

How many 118 year olds do you know? 😬
I think this is mostly accurate, but middle age 35-45, perhaps I can see an argument for 35-50 as some do live to be 100 though very unusual. But 50 would definitely be pushing the upper end of middle age.

JadeisChristopher · 23/04/2026 06:58

Surely “middle aged” if taken literally is the middle of your ages/life? So if an average lifespan is 80, then 40 is middle aged. Very few people live to be 100+. So depending on how big a range you use, middle aged on average would be 38-50 roughly. I would still call someone 50-60 middle aged, but I understand technically they are more than likely past the middle of their life! I might not like it, but at 44 I accept I’m middle aged (and likely past it to be honest as all my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles all died before 70 from various cancers).

Sazzles169 · 23/04/2026 07:27

Are you actively planning to cark it at 60? If not, its not the middle of your life.

Londonrach1 · 23/04/2026 07:29

My 79 year old mil says she's middle aged so no way 30 is middle aged. I think middle age is around 45 to 60...

localhere · 23/04/2026 07:33

I’m 55 and I don’t see why I won’t reach my 80s. Therefore I’ve got a lifetime left to live. You’re the oldest you’ve ever been and that can feel heavy but good god it’s a self fulfilling prophecy, think yourself old and it shall be so
