My sister and I are 46 and 48 and wouldn’t say we are middle aged yet. Neither of us has hit menopause so I would say middle age is early fifties to 65. With 65 plus older and elderly at around 85.

I mean this also doesn’t make sense unless people are living to 100-120 on the regular.

amber763 · Yesterday 18:10

Don't be daft. Why would you think that?

Jk987 · Yesterday 18:11

Even if that were true, what would you do with the information. Would it change anything?

PleasantPedant · Yesterday 18:11

@ButterYellowHair . It's not the mid-point of your life, it's the age-group that is between childbearing and retiring, so roughly 45-70.

These threads come up all the time and they're tedious.

But that makes no sense… childbearing could be anywhere between 16 and 50.

Do people who never bear children never reach middle aged?

0 - 15 = child
16 - 25 = youth
25 - 50 = young adult
51 - 70 = middle-aged adult
71 - 85 = older adult
85+ = elderly adult

70 is pushing it for middle aged

Between the end of your child bearing years and old age. Not the start of them.

In all honesty yes a lot of my family do sadly even younger due to cancer even in late 30’s and 40’s.

Then I guess in your family 30 is middle aged.

sucks

Sarah2891 · Yesterday 18:21

40+ is middle aged

Vicliz24 · Yesterday 18:21

You’re absolutely in your prime at 30 .

Samesame47 · Yesterday 18:25

No not at all, I am 49 and only now consider myself to be middle aged - even though I know it’s unlikely I will live until I am 98. I still feel very young at heart, am relatively fit and healthy but I am getting a few wrinkles now and may need to dye my hair soon as getting a few greys, therefore I think I am a middle aged woman x

Snaletrale · Yesterday 18:27

I’m only just accepting I’m middle aged now I’ve reached 60. Yab so u.

Sorry to hear that. Still doesn't mean 30 is 'middle-aged' though.

No. It's a mix d bag but most 30 year olds I know are only near the beginning of life's adulting adventure. No longer young adults but nowhere near the more experienced adults that I would class as middle aged. Some still live at home, many don't have their own homes and share with others, some are in serious relationships, some married but most not... Many in career jobs, but some still searching for their thing. Many have kids or know they definitely don't want them but some still figuring it out. Even if you are only taking the term to mean average life expectancy ( which I would argue against as a definition), most adults live to over 60.

Pancakesandcream33 · Yesterday 18:32

I class mid thirties as middle aged...I'm 37 this year. I mean a woman in her 30s is classed as a geriatric mother so we definitely aren't young!

So middle aged is 20 then? YABU for thinking terms which are supposed to describe the life times of a general population are necessarily going to reflect your familial experience. I am vey sorry to hear you family members died to young.

Nanda66 · Yesterday 18:37

I hope not as I’ll be 60 next birthday. Hoping to be around for a while yet.

PleasantPedant · Yesterday 18:38

Middle age (or middle adulthood) is the age range of the years halfway between young adulthood and old age.

This time span is generally referred to as "middle age" and can be defined as the time of ages about 40–45 to about 65–70.

Dearover · Yesterday 18:45

I see you're also fretting about an outfit for your 30th birthday in July on your other thread. Don't worry, some nice elasticated waist trousers and a sailor striped top will do just fine. That must be what proper middle aged people wear.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · Yesterday 18:47

I'm 65. I have days when I feel oldER, but I have yet to feel 'old'. I think you are 'old' over 80. 60-80 is late middle age.

I might be a bit fence-sitty on this one.

weareallcats · Yesterday 18:49

40ish to 65ish is middle age.
