And there is no getting away from it really

0 - 15 = child
16 - 25 = youth
25 - 50 = young adult
51 - 70 = middle-aged adult
71 - 85 = older adult
85+ = elderly adult

The idea that 50 is young adult and 70 is middle aged, is as batshit as 30 being middle aged! 😆

I would say

0 - 18 = child
19 - 40 = young adult
41 - 50 = Middle-aged
51 - 70 = Senior
71+ = Elderly

51-70 senior 😂

TBF, I hated turning 30. By far my worst birthday. I felt I had to grow up.

Sixty next year and I'll be thrilled!

Yeah, I'm 57 & 30 but me hard! But I think that was more as I wasn't in the place I thought I'd be at 30.. not dunce, but I think after my 30th I was more accepting if it 🥴

YABU.

That’s before a lot of people even get married/start families nowadays.

At its widest ‘definition’ I would say that you can make an argument for 45+ but personally I think 50-55 is where middle-aged begins now.

You gonna live to 110? Impressive.

Forgodssakebruh · Yesterday 22:36

God no 😅 I felt so young at 30…up to about 38/39 I felt v young…45 upwards…feel old now 😩or definitely older

Plumblossomsbloom · Yesterday 22:36

I think 35 is when it starts, that's when youth is over, seems like people always forget that part. Sure, you're middle aged at 50 but that's not when it starts, because you're not young at 49.

60 is when you reach old age IMO

I don't know why people take offence at any of it, it's not an insult. It's just biology.

51-70 senior 😂

Almost as funny as 40 being a young adult.

what happened to just 'adult'???

It's not 'biology' & what happened to the period if simply 'adult' ??

Middle aged is your age + 10

Keepgettingolder81 · Yesterday 22:43

I am 45 but still think I am 20!

Tryagain26 · Yesterday 22:44

No at 30 you are stil young. Definitely not middle aged

madnessitellyou · Yesterday 22:46

I’m 47.

If I was middle aged at 30, I must be due to die shortly, no?

I mean, I probably am middle aged now, but despite the noises I make when I get off the couch, the fact I need reading glasses and that just today I caused shock and awe with a very much younger colleague after imparting the knowledge that I didn’t possess a mobile phone until I was nearly 20, in my head I’m still full of the first flush of youth.

Zov · Yesterday 22:54

@madnessitellyou Yes, I feel like I'm in my late 20s (in my head) but am knocking the door of 60! 😬

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · Yesterday 22:55

Or if you understand that you don’t go from ‘young adult’ to ‘middle aged’

  • Infant/Baby (0-1 year)
  • Toddler (1-3 years)
  • Preschooler/Child (3-9 years)
  • Pre-teen/Tween (10-12 years)
  • Teenager/Adolescent (13-17 years)
  • Young Adult (18-25 years)
  • Adult (26-39 years)
  • Middle-Aged Adult (40-59 years)
  • Senior/Elderly (60+ years)
Zov · Yesterday 22:58

Middle aged adult - 59?!

ELDERLY - 60?!

PMSL. 😂

I don't envy you @LiviaDrusillaAugusta when the Mumsnetters aged 60, (and all those in their 60s!) see this, and see you calling them ELDERLY, they will be furious! Wait for the backlash!

I mean really?! 😆

NeverDropYourMooncup · Yesterday 23:03

If you're dividing lifespan into 0-30, 31-60 and 61-90, mathematically, you could say that.

But the people who do tend to be either very young or rather like my ex, who was one of the types who believed he was entitled to young women into his 40s and 50s - to him, 30 was practically in the grave for women and he'd bin girlfriends purely because of their 30th birthday coming up.

As opposed to suggesting 51-70 is ‘Senior’.

And apparently there is nothing between young adult and middle aged.

That doesn't have anything to do with it. Adult is 18+ and child is under 18. 100 years old is still adult. You don't stop being an adult when you hit middle age. You stop being considered young when you hit middle age.

People can delude themselves all they want but 40, 50 etc isn't young. It doesn't matter if people feel young still, people feel all kinds of things that aren't relevant to anything. We're not talking feelings, but statistics. People's fertility is declining after 35, their metabolism slowly changing which is why there's so many overweight even when eating reasonably healthy who were slim in their youth despite terrible diets full of junk, fine lines start on the face even if you can't see them unless close up. People are out of their youth and all grown up by the time they're 35, they're entering their middle years, ergo they are middle aged 🤷

Zov · Yesterday 23:06

35 isn't middle aged! 😂

Viviennemary · Yesterday 23:07

Silly. Around 45-55.

ImFinePMSL · Yesterday 23:08

I’m 32 and still feel like a teenager.
