AIBU to use main bathroom on holiday despite en suite?

Last Easter I went away with DH, Sister and BIL. We stayed in an castle apartment.
As I have IBS and other gut issues I insisted on having a bedroom with an en suit for my benefit and everyone else’s. This was fine, DH and I got the room with the little en-suite. On the first night we were watching a film in the living room and I got up to pop to toilet, I went into the main bathroom and they all started shouting that I should use my own bathroom. I laughed and said I’m only going for a wee and this was met with more shouting of “you have your own toilet”, DH then said “she does this at home too, claims ownership on one toilet then uses everyone else’s”

Anyway it went on and on, the whole 3 nights were spent with them trying to stop me using the main bathroom. I think it started as a joke but they were 100% being serious by the end of it.

Anyway we’re due to go back tomorrow, same place and already sister is dropping hints about whoever gets the en suite uses that exclusively.

Am I the one in the wrong here?? I’m only using main bathroom for peeing btw

I was only using it for weeing and the apartment is spooky, the main bathroom is next to the living room. The en-suite is in the bedroom at the far end of a dark spooky corridor. I know it sounds daft but I’m not the only one freaked out by that corridor

You’re being unreasonable OP and I’d be irritated if I were travelling with you. Get some plug in lights for the corridor.

I agree with the majority of people on here and also think it’s silly if you to demand the suite but then also want to use the main bathroom. The stuff about the spooky corridor to your bedroom is also very silly.

I do think the others were being a bit OTT continuously harping on about it though, seems an overreaction from them. However the bit that got me…

At any point during the “whole 3 nights” did you not think “ah maybe I should just…stop…using this bathroom?” They made it clear they weren’t happy with it (which is fair play seeing as you demanded the en suite) so why did you not just…stop? It’s like you were winding them up on purpose by continuing to use their bathroom. Sounds like a really crap holiday if this took over, when you could’ve just gone to your own damn toilet.

I don't think it was them being mean and wanting to bully OP; it sounds to me like they're really angry at her entitled attitude.

Nobody wants to have an out and out blazing row on holiday, so this is the only alternative they can think of - passive aggressive as it may seem - to try to get the message across to her without it leading to a fight that ruins the rest of the holiday for all of them.

As I and several others have already surmised in this thread, I bet it isn't the only thing that she's 'insisted' on, just because it makes things nicer for her.

JJMama · 29/03/2026 18:37

I think you should read your OP back and answer your own question!

The en-suite doesn’t have a shower so we need to use the main bathroom anyway to shower.
we won’t be booking this place again as it’s just not worth the hassle. One of the other apartments has two en-suite and a main bathroom so we’ll get that one next time

Are you then going to use the two main bathrooms while you have your own - and exclude even your husband from using yours??,

Witchymadwoman · 29/03/2026 18:40

Presumably, you wash your hands after the wee? Who's towel are you using to dry them?

Sennelier1 · 29/03/2026 18:41

Unless you are the one cleaning all of the bathrooms, I think you should only use your reserved en-suite bathroom.

TakeALookAtTheseSwatches · 29/03/2026 18:47

YANBU at all, my parents had an en suite the last time we went away but they just used the nearest loo when we were all in the living room. What a bizarre thread this is.

Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease · 29/03/2026 19:19

You're the type that says they don't want chips, then continue to pick at someone else's.

It's the principle. YABU.

Tuesdayschild50 · 29/03/2026 19:33

Yeah bit annoying considering you wanted the ensuite for your own .

Defo in the wrong

FlapperFlamingo · 29/03/2026 20:10

It can’t be that spooky if you have rebooked it. Just use your own bathroom and don’t act so silly.

elh1605 · 29/03/2026 20:15

I agree with you. If only a wee why would you walk to other end of the place when there's a main bathroom next to the living room. We go away with family and all have en suites but there's a loo downstairs next to lounge and we all use it for a wee in the evenings.

Laurmolonlabe · 29/03/2026 20:16

You insisted on your own bathroom, of course it is incredibly impolite to use the main bathroom.

MerryUmberHedgehog · 29/03/2026 20:24

If you insist on having designated loos then stick to your own rules.

I think your comment that "We all have en-suites" is rather pertinent here!

exactly! It's weird how several posters have basically said "My family [insert completely different scenario]" and seem to think this is relevant?

Exactly. OP is clearly sensitive to her what suits her but not what might bother others.

PorridgeEater · 29/03/2026 22:04

"The en-suite is in the bedroom at the far end of a dark spooky corridor. I know it sounds daft but I’m not the only one freaked out by that corridor"

This is drip feeding isn't it.
And yes it does sound daft - why hire the same apartment again if you think it's spooky?

AliceNotInChains · 28/03/2026 14:15

I prefer him not to but I don’t stop him. It’s just easier for it to be a one person toilet

Oh dear, got second hand embarrassment for you......you are that person.

Challenger2A7 · 29/03/2026 23:48

Spooky corridor???? How old are you??? Three???? Pull yourself together, grow up, and use the en suite bathroom you fought for.

Whattt??? I am see why he sides with them saying “she does this at home too” Why the hell shouldnt he use the en suite aswell? You’re very controlling and demanding, it’s clear why they were all vexed, you don’t even want your DH using the en-suite, are you this entitled with everything in your life or just toilets? Do you even realise how irritating of a person you are? The votes and comments telling you that you are should be enough proof.

Viviennemary · 30/03/2026 00:37

The others should have just used your bathroom and toilet. Presumably the ghost isn't so fussy.

PorridgeAndSyrup · 30/03/2026 00:39

I'm sorry, but they are being absolutely bizarre. The main bathroom is for anyone to use. Who cares about people having a quick wee in any bathroom?! As long as you're not hogging it while they're waiting to have a shower in the morning, the main bathroom is fair game. They are absolute weirdos.

Gemz1010g · 30/03/2026 08:48

I think YABU as your sister is probably making a bigger accommodation than you realise, having ibs is one thing but for a lot of women having a poo on vacation is difficult even if they don't have bowel issues, I have ibs c so don't to have to if I'm away from home but most of my friends struggle on vacation too. So if its stressing her out I can understand her getting annoyed if she's let you have privacy and still you use the shared one

You are not only ridiculous but very entitled ! You wanted your own bathroom so bloody use it .
Its like buying yourself a chocolate cake and won't share but want to eat some of the cake someone else bought for themselves , you see how utterly entitled that is ?
