Dh sulking after being away

Overitagain88 · 24/03/2026 21:34

Dh has been away for a couple of days with work. Left sunday lunchtime and back today about 16:00 so just over 48 hours away. And is now sulking that we haven't all made a massive fuss about him being home

For context there is me and 2 kids at home (9 and 5) i WFH on a tuesday and had just got back from school run (agreed I take a later lunch break on WFH days) and was just jumping on a call as DH came back

Kids were up playing in their bedrooms and didn't hear DH walk in

We then had to leave for a sporting activity we do on a Tuesday about 30 minutes after he walked in so it was all a mad rush and he is now in a strop saying we all should have made more of an effort to welcome him home

I've also had to feed the pets, sort the washing, lunches for tomorrow and finish off some work while hes sulking

You absolute witch, should at very least have got balloon arches, brass band and cheerleaders to welcome the hero home. Ticker tape would have been a bare minimum x bless him 🤦‍♀️

TheAutumnCrow · 24/03/2026 22:14

He then proceeded to shout and scream at our eldest as they didn't come down at all until told to.

A 9 year old? Your husband is behaving horribly. I doubt I’d be so calm about it tbh.

Mariachi band at the very least. Plus a bank holiday

Forestgreenblue · 24/03/2026 22:16

3 days away for work last week OP and I walked in, popped a wash on AND had no tea waiting for me after a 6 hour drive home walking in at 8.30pm

It’s a wonder I haven’t moved out and abandoned the lot of them!!!

Kids also barely batted an eyelid. “Oh you’re home Mum!”

Not bothered in the slightest to be honest - was ace having a few days away!!!!! Sod them all - I’ve had 3 days not cooking or cleaning and having actual nice restaurant meals paid for by work plus Netflix of my choice back in my room. Loved it!! Roll on 3 months when I’ve 3 more nights away

portvfs · 24/03/2026 22:17

The world does not revolve around him.

So to clarify...

I did come out of the space I WFH in for a minute before joining the call I needed to be in, gave him a quick hug, said I needed to be on a call, kids were upstairs (actually playing nicely for once!) I'll be out in half an hour to get ready to go to activity, which we all go to

He then proceeded to shout and scream at our eldest as they didn't come down at all until told to. Youngest had come down looking for a toy and seen him. Eldest has been upset all night as it was a proper shouting (i wasn't in the room but heard it from the where I work)

But apparently too difficult for him to go upstairs and tell them hes home

So he gets verbally abusive with your kid when you all don't bow and scrape enough for the master.

I wouldn't miss that screaming abusive prick either. I'd be getting my ducks lined up.

Evaka · 24/03/2026 22:24

He sounds deranged. Why's he screaming at your small child?

LessDramaMoreLiving · 24/03/2026 22:28

Surely he knows the Tues routine, why would today be any different? He should have thanked you for having held the fort on your own and saying how lovely it was to hear the kids playing nicely before dishing out the presents he brought back for everyone.

Let him sulk. Nob head. Enjoy the peace.

Notonthestairs · 24/03/2026 22:30

He sounds horrible. No excuses for shouting at your eldest. I hope he’s apologised to your kid, it was a wild and inappropriate overreaction.

Empress13 · 24/03/2026 22:31

Where was the red carpet OP ?

GingersOwner26 · 24/03/2026 22:34

What a man-baby.

SmugglersHaunt · 24/03/2026 22:35

He sounds like a gigantic prick. But - just cracking open my copy of Amateur Psychology - do you think he’s acting out because he’s feeling guilty?

Suedoh · 24/03/2026 22:36

Aww poor baby

Offherrockingchair · 24/03/2026 22:37

Surely you should be the one sulking when you’ve held the fort for the last couple of days and done your usual job with fuck all help from him! I’d have expected him to come in, sort a snack and then take the kids to their activity to give you a break!!! But no, enter Captain Save the Day, expecting a huge fanfare. What a cock! Fuckity bye to him. Life’s too short!

blythet · 24/03/2026 22:40

he’s expecting the kids to come running and make a big fuss cos they missed him.
what did he do to make a big fuss and show them he missed them?

I often go away for work for one or 2 nights. I’d come in the door and shout up to say hi to my Dd, take my shoes off then run straight up to get a massive hug and tell her how good it was to see her.
why does he expect a 5 and 9 year old to show him more respect an attention than he shows them. He’s (supposedly) the adult

Harsh thread

breadwinner comes home after an exhausting trip and gets zero respect or thanks, so shows his dissatisfaction

wife comes online to moan and everyone piles in on him

Geez

That seems like a bit of a leap. I agree he sounds horrible though.

Geez

He's not the breadwinner. OP works too, as well as keeping house and kids under control singlehanded while His Royal Highness is away.

He was welcomed with a hug and screamed at a child and now is sulking.

Geez

OP is a breadwinner too. Whilst looking after the family. That’s where the respect and thanks should lay.

He should have come in and said
’how can I help?’

He wanted an argument to be able to sulk and do absolutely nothing for anyone.

Shout and scream? Abusive father, please tell dh to stop
That's really awful to read.

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 24/03/2026 22:54

What a big baby! A couple of weeks away or more I may just about be able to understand him feeling a bit miffed but 48 hours - he’s seriously overreacting.

Wtf! How do you know op doesn’t earn more (at the same time as keeping the house running and looking after the children…)?

PeachySmile2 · 24/03/2026 23:05

Pathetic

lazyarse123 · 24/03/2026 23:06

Wonderful way to make his kids miss him by screaming at them. Wanker. I hope you told him how out of order that was.
