AIBU to think DH’s joke after my car crash was inappropriate?

Laulau3 · 23/03/2026 18:10

Someone went in to the back of my car earlier today when I was returning from nursery drop off. I was in traffic, so no harm done to me, but the car obviously needs some repairs. The man driving stopped and was apologetic and we swapped details.

I called DH and after checking I was okay, he ‘joked’ that ‘he has had more luck than me over the years in smashing your back doors in’. I told him I didn’t see the funny side.

He messaged me later to say I’m being uptight and to get a sense of humour.

There’s a time and a place, surely?

Had someone crash into the back of me. I joked, that it was the first time I'd been "rear ended" 😂

LightYearsAgo · 23/03/2026 18:43

We aren't obliged to find other peoples "jokes" funny or appropriate.

Would you say the same about Bernard Manning?

Funnily enough that revolting man sprang to mind.

The key here is that it was you who told the joke.

Man telling bad joke = not necessarily tosser
Man telling bad joke and when woman doesn't find it funny telling her to lighten up and get a sense of humour = tosser.

It was bloody funny!! Many other people on here agree…

when did life get so serious and everyone is offended by everything?

LunchatthePriory · 23/03/2026 19:25

Sensiblesal · 23/03/2026 19:22

No he wasn’t referring to forcible anal sex.

you just suggested the OP’s husband is a wanabe rapist. I think thats more offensive than what he said

Edited

What do you think he meant by ‘ smashing your back doors in’ then?

Sensiblesal · 23/03/2026 19:25

dadtoateen · 23/03/2026 19:18

It was obviously a joke to try and lighten the mood…

why is everyone so uptight about this.?

it sounds like it was a very minor accident, assume the op let him know all was ok etc.

but no, man equals tosser

it did make me giggle to be fair, make light of a shit situation

They are gonna come for you for saying that.

but yeah he just tried to make a joke & lighten the mood.

I don’t actually understand why the OP is married to someone she doesn’t like or at least dislikes his sense of humour

WhineAndWine1 · 23/03/2026 19:26

@viquesnot doubt you would chuck in a tinkley laugh as well?

It just means having anal sex.

it doesn’t mean forcible/rape. It can 100% be consensual. Its just a turn of phrase, yeah its a bit vulgar this day in age but thats it

Dawnintheageofaquariams · 23/03/2026 19:26

For a start it is a shit joke.
No back door on a car.
Your DH needs to stay in his lane being an unfunny twat and writing jokes for Jimmy Carr to do in Dubai.

I’m used to it so meh 🤷‍♂️

folks need to lighten up

Gardenalia · 23/03/2026 19:27

Would he have found a similar joke cracked by you funny, if he was feeling stressed etc after a crash?

Personally I would leave the jokes until my loved one had calmed down and had started to see the funny side anyway

Lovesplasticstraws · 23/03/2026 19:28

Unfortunate crude phrasing.
I was rear ended (f'nar) at low speed and car was written off by insurance company. Load of hassle getting money out of them, replacing child seats etc. Increase in premiums for 5 years.
Take it easy on yourself.

Sounds like he has a sense of humour so he probably would have found it funny

And the posters who don't think it's funny, including the OP are entirely within their rights not to find it funny. People don't have to lighten up to accommodate the sense of humour of other people.

YellowDuck1 · 23/03/2026 19:29

Ewwww immediate ick. He sounds like an overgrown teenager!

People use the expression for both consensual and non-consensual anal sex. Even if you understand it to mean only consensual sex, it is a very forceful and aggressive metaphor which focuses on sex as something physically damaging. Horrible.

Hiddenmnetter · 23/03/2026 19:29

I think that possibly the issue here isn’t that the joke is brilliant or in poor taste or whatever, but that despite it being relatively minor car accidents can still leave you feeling a bit shaken up. If your DH hasn’t had one, he might not realise this. Any car accident and your body will go full flight or fight- it can take some coming down from.

WhineAndWine1 · 23/03/2026 19:31

@LunchatthePriory I also think it’s a bit much to imply what you did. To me it means having 100% consensual rough sex not forced sex.

Exactly.

so the folks that did find it funny are within there rights to say so…

I’m guessing you haven’t been married to a person who can dish out the jokes, but can’t take them…

Don't disagree with you there. Never did.
