To put dog mess in a strangers bin?

I normally would never dream of doing this. However, today I was walking my dog along a road when he decided to crap on the grass verge. So of course I picked it up and bagged it.

It was bin day and everyone's bins were outside their houses. The bin lorry turned into the street and so, as it approached, I popped the bag into the nearest bin which was collected almost immediately.

However the man in the house came storming out and started shouting at me. He said I had no right to put anything in his bin. It got worse when I tried to explain, especially as he hadn't realised it was a dog bag. So I apologised and moved off with him still shouting down the road.

I would never have placed anything in anyone's bin whilst it's on their property, but these bins are all on the pavement waiting to be emptied. It was about 3/4 full, I placed the bag on top of what was there and the whole bin was emptied within about 60 seconds.

Was I really out of order?

Yes, you were.

outerspacepotato · 16/03/2026 16:03

Asshole move.

PoachedSmoke · 16/03/2026 16:04

Yes. Do not put disgusting dog mess (regardless of how well wrapped) in someone else's bin. Quite aside from anything else the smell is repulsive. You are absolutely out of order and people like you are why I've had to buy bin locks!!! Take your mess home to your own bin or use the appropriate public waste bin. Please understand that to non dog owners this really is unpleasant OP.

REDB99 · 16/03/2026 16:05

Disgusting to put dog poo in someone else’s bin. What a surprise another clueless and entitled dog owner.

OhWise1 · 16/03/2026 16:05

Skanky! Would hou want him to shit in your dustbin,?

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 16/03/2026 16:05

In my opinion, absolutely you were. Its not for you to decide whether your shit of all things should go anywhere near other people's things.

As it was emptied the bag could easily split and got all over the handles while you waltzed shit free down the road

GreenCandleWax · 16/03/2026 16:06

I would be reallyannoyed if anyone put anything in my bin without asking..😔

Heatedrival · 16/03/2026 16:06

Unacceptable. I always take it home. We had a skip a few years ago and people kept putting it in there. The smell was horrific.
If you can’t find an appropriate bin then you take it home.

NobodysChildNow · 16/03/2026 16:07

The problem is small bags often do not tip into the bin lorry properly - they fall in a gap and are too small to get emptied out. And then the bin owner has to reach all the way into the bin to fish it out.

Lomonald · 16/03/2026 16:07

I wouldn't have cared, but some.people are fussy and especially a bag of dog shit obviously gave him the rage, yabu to just assume you can just dump it in people's bins, he has clocked you and he will mutter about you and the "bag of shit" forever you might need to change your walking route 😀

Fends · 16/03/2026 16:08

Ugh. I’d be out telling you how disgusting too if you put shit in my bin. Horrible.

Spaghettea · 16/03/2026 16:08

Yabu. Fucking gross. I would lose it if I saw someone try this.

It happened to my bin once (after collection) and it stank. I had to hook the poo bag out with a stick and take it to a public bin.

ilovesooty · 16/03/2026 16:08

So what would you have done with the poo bag if the about to be emptied bin hadn't so conveniently presented itself?

Everleigh13 · 16/03/2026 16:09

Somebody put a dog poo bag in my food waste bin last week. If I’d seen them do it I would have gone out and told them off.

I know you didn’t put it in their food waste bin but I really wouldn’t put it in any bin that isn’t yours. Take it home.

caffeinedependent · 16/03/2026 16:09

I don't get the outrage, I would have done the same if the bins were out on the street waiting to be emptied. Also, technically bins aren't people's properties either, they belong to the council, so I think everyone needs to take a step back and stop being so petty.

Tryagain26 · 16/03/2026 16:09

Yes unreasonable.

Piglet89 · 16/03/2026 16:09

OMG what is wrong with people who put their dog’s excrement in another person’s bin.

Fredbaassett · 16/03/2026 16:09

He was a very uptight character! The bin men were in sight - ready to collect. It was wrapped and he shouted at you! Forget it.

Knittedanimal · 16/03/2026 16:10

Of course not! What sort of idiot gets areated about rubbish being put in a bin?

EverardDeTroyes · 16/03/2026 16:10

Yes, you are unreasonable. I have a friend who does this and I think it is disgusting. Mind you, so is walking next to her as she carries a bag of dog poo. It really is, or can be anyway, offensively smelly. But even so, you shouldn't put your dog's poo in someone else's bin.

GasPanic · 16/03/2026 16:10

If it is properly wrapped and sealed, why not put it in the place you normally would ?

AnnaQuayRules · 16/03/2026 16:11

That has never happened to me in all my years of dog owning.

Wow. YABVVVU
Dog owners are often entitled. Take it home to your own bin.
Why can't dog owners do this?. Where I live there is a dog bin near the entrance to a graveyard which is always full within a day of being emptied. Yet many many people leave their dog bags on the ground around the bin. So when people are burying loved ones they have to file past with the coffin, dodging full stinking poo bags. There is another bin 300m away. Even if there were not, take it home..
I cannot het my head round this attitude. You got a dog, knowing you would be responsible for its shit. Yet it needs to be someone elses problem.

TomatoSandwiches · 16/03/2026 16:12

I wouldn't mind if someone popped some littered recycling in my bin but not dog poo, no, YABU.

I'd have taken it home and put it in my bin. Which is what I always do.
