To put dog mess in a strangers bin?

AnnaQuayRules · 16/03/2026 16:01

I normally would never dream of doing this. However, today I was walking my dog along a road when he decided to crap on the grass verge. So of course I picked it up and bagged it.

It was bin day and everyone's bins were outside their houses. The bin lorry turned into the street and so, as it approached, I popped the bag into the nearest bin which was collected almost immediately.

However the man in the house came storming out and started shouting at me. He said I had no right to put anything in his bin. It got worse when I tried to explain, especially as he hadn't realised it was a dog bag. So I apologised and moved off with him still shouting down the road.

I would never have placed anything in anyone's bin whilst it's on their property, but these bins are all on the pavement waiting to be emptied. It was about 3/4 full, I placed the bag on top of what was there and the whole bin was emptied within about 60 seconds.

Was I really out of order?

Wouldn’t bother me if it was about to be emptied. Some PPs are a bit hysterical.

Malasana · 16/03/2026 17:04

Either take it home with you or put it in a dog bin.
You’re so far in the wrong.

CurtsyFriends · 16/03/2026 17:06

I wouldn’t have an issue if someone put their dog poo in my bin on bin day tbh. Much better than the numptys who ‘forget’ to take bags out with them and let their dogs foul anywhere they like.

I guess the solution is that the council need to put more poo bins out. But that comes with an added cost - not just for the bin itself but having it emptied. Perhaps a dog licence would help with those costs and encourage more people to be responsible owners.

PoachedSmoke · 16/03/2026 16:04

Yes. Do not put disgusting dog mess (regardless of how well wrapped) in someone else's bin. Quite aside from anything else the smell is repulsive. You are absolutely out of order and people like you are why I've had to buy bin locks!!! Take your mess home to your own bin or use the appropriate public waste bin. Please understand that to non dog owners this really is unpleasant OP.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

The outrage on here is laughable and pathetic. The bin was being emptied for goodness sake.

PeonyPatch · 16/03/2026 17:07

BrokenWingsCantFly · 16/03/2026 16:42

Exactly. Some of these comments make it sound like OP has put it through someone's letter box. It is a bin, it was collected shorty after.

I wouldn't care if it was in my bin as long as it is bagged up properly , I dont tend to sniff bins

Precisely!!!!!

Some people are way too precious. We all have to live together in this society, let’s help each other out!

In a bin that is about to be emptied!!! Some posters need to grow up

pippistrelle · 16/03/2026 17:08

People are a bit nuts about bins. I'm a bit nuts about bins and wouldn't like this. However, I recognse that it's not very rational. It's a big lump of plastic that I didn't directly buy, whose purpose is the collecting of rubbish. Why would it matter as long as there's enough room for the things I want to dispose of? And yet, and yet...

Not nuts enough for bin locks though, or to shout at someone in the street.

TeenLifeMum · 16/03/2026 17:09

My bin, my crap. Keep your crap to yourself.

Yep and we pay for that so why is it okay for others to benefit because they’re too lazy to take their mess home?

ibblebibbledibble · 16/03/2026 17:11

Haha this thread is so funny! What the hell do people think will happen to their pristine if a sealed bag is resting on top of their rubbish for a minute or two?! It was literally being emptied.

Imisscoffee2021 · 16/03/2026 17:16

Tbf if it splits with the weight of the other stuff when the bin is emptied and smears on the inside of his bin that's a grim thing to have to clean. If you don't own a dog the last thing you want is dog crap in your bin.

Theyikesdyke · 16/03/2026 17:17

Only read the outragw on page 1... its a bin??? Why do people care ?? Its being emptied THAT DAY, unclench lassies.

AgnesMcDoo · 16/03/2026 17:18

Piglet89 · 16/03/2026 16:18

Don’t the contents of the public bins specifically for dog shit get incinerated?

@AgnesMcDooI am guessing you’ve never had to scrub out your bin after some filthy dog owner lifted the lid and dumped a bag of their dog’s shit in the empty bin (ie before we the home owners put any bagged waste in there), the bag then broke and the dog shit was all over your bin.

Christ those people are absolute scum.

I’ve never scrubbed my bin - cause it’s an outside bin - no idea whether it’s had poop in it or not.

and I’m not in the batshit crazy and precious about my bin gang - cause it’s a bin

2026Y · 16/03/2026 17:18

Noodge · 16/03/2026 16:13

People are very protective over their bins OP. I have never done this, because I don't like being shouted at, but I wouldn't give a rat's doodahs if anyone did it in my bin. It's a bin, It's not meant to smell like Nag Champa.

yep 😂

one of the most surprising things about Mumsnet (in a crowded field) is people’s attitude to their bins.

Theyikesdyke · 16/03/2026 17:19

Everyone pays council tax therefore your council provided bin which is emptied by the council...isnt yours ?? Its a benefit provided by the state to help the community. I dont begrudge someone using it instead of littering.

Mumandcarer80 · 16/03/2026 17:20

I hate it when someone puts dog poo in my bin it stinks for weeks. Over winter someone put some in my empty bin. With it being damp and frosty it froze to the bottom of the bin. Was stuck there for weeks.

FunMustard · 16/03/2026 17:21

It wouldn't bother me OP but some people are oddly territorial of bagged items being put in their bin even when it's due to be collected within minutes.

(Yes it would bother me if it was unbagged).

Allisnotlost1 · 16/03/2026 17:25

I cannot imagine getting worked up about this. Certainly not to the extent of shouting at someone in the street! People have put their rubbish in my bin, on the odd occasion where there is no public bin I’ve used a wheelie bin that’s been put out onto the street. It’s quite common to see public bins used for bagged dog shit because the dog shit specific ones break and aren’t replaced. I tend to think that’s worse, because those bins are open and often near benches or bus stops. Outside bins are… outside. Who cares if they smell?

You don’t clean your bin? That’s minging. At least once a month I spray mine with Jeys wipe the outside and clean inside them with an old mop. During the pandemic local bin men were asking us to wipe the handles of our bins before we put it out.

WiddlinDiddlin · 16/03/2026 17:26

KLAXON, DOG POO, BINS, OTHER PEOPLES STUFF... ALARUM ALARUM.

No of course not, sticking it in the top of a full bin a few minutes before the bin waggon arrives to empty it is fine.

Our local council pointed out that THEY own the bins and empty them and if the bin is in a public place (so you're not trespassing to do this) and you're not causing the bin-adopter to clean up a mess, there really is no issue.

Obviously trekking across someone elses property, dumping it so it makes a mess for someone else to clean, or dropping it into a recently emptied bin is unacceptable... but thats not what you did so all the people getting aeriated about something that didn't happen need to calm the fuck down.

I have just thought of a genius new revenge though for those who leave their bins obstructing the path days after the bin lorry has been... if I have to move your bin to get past it, and I have a baggy of poo with me and need to put the poo down to move the bin, I will henceforth be putting the poo IN your bin. Peoples of the West Midlands, beware!

PoachedSmoke · 16/03/2026 17:27

@mydogisthebest Not hard to work out what kind of dog owners you are 😂

AxolotlEars · 16/03/2026 17:29

I wouldn't be bothered about you putting it in my bin however I wouldn't put in anyone else's bin

IAmOphelia · 16/03/2026 17:29

Jesus fucking wept the level of outrage is mental. It’s a wheelie bin and it’s bagged dog poo. What’s the big deal? It’s not like you put it in his kitchen bin.

This thread is a depressing reminder that people are weird, territorial, and up tight.

And I am not even a dog owner.
