To put dog mess in a strangers bin?

I normally would never dream of doing this. However, today I was walking my dog along a road when he decided to crap on the grass verge. So of course I picked it up and bagged it.

It was bin day and everyone's bins were outside their houses. The bin lorry turned into the street and so, as it approached, I popped the bag into the nearest bin which was collected almost immediately.

However the man in the house came storming out and started shouting at me. He said I had no right to put anything in his bin. It got worse when I tried to explain, especially as he hadn't realised it was a dog bag. So I apologised and moved off with him still shouting down the road.

I would never have placed anything in anyone's bin whilst it's on their property, but these bins are all on the pavement waiting to be emptied. It was about 3/4 full, I placed the bag on top of what was there and the whole bin was emptied within about 60 seconds.

Was I really out of order?

I think people need to get over themselves. It’s a bin - for rubbish - it’s all going to the same place. I wouldn’t care if someone needed to use our bin. Plus at least they’re picking it up and putting it in the bin, better than leaving it!!

OMG what is wrong with people who put their dog’s excrement in another person’s bin.

Dog owners very often become extremely subjective - as though incapable of seeing things from any other point of view but theirs and their precious pet's. People matter too - so often forgotton by tunnel vision dog owners, sadly.😨

That has never happened to me in all my years of dog owning.

It's happened to me when somebody did what you did. Big wheelie bin, little owner. Such fun.

GasPanic · 16/03/2026 16:13

My bin does regularly have stuff retained in it that doesn't tip out on the first attempt. It tends to be light bulky stuff, and this stuff can often stop other things being tipped out.

I guess it depends whether you black bag all your rubbish.

Noodge · 16/03/2026 16:13

People are very protective over their bins OP. I have never done this, because I don't like being shouted at, but I wouldn't give a rat's doodahs if anyone did it in my bin. It's a bin, It's not meant to smell like Nag Champa.

AgnesMcDoo · 16/03/2026 16:13

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with doing that.

but folk, as you will see from your thread, are batshit crazy about their bins 🤣

AnnaQuayRules · 16/03/2026 16:12

I'd have taken it home and put it in my bin. Which is what I always do.

Keep doing this.

He was a very uptight character! The bin men were in sight - ready to collect. It was wrapped and he shouted at you! Forget it.

Well, that was my thinking. But clearly almost everyone else thinks I'm being unreasonable. I really thought that, because the bag would be in there for at most 60 seconds, it wouldn't be an issue. Obviously I misread the situation

Oh here we go, despite posters telling you how unreasonable you were the ‘I’m a dog owner and therefore I can do whatever I like’ attitude shows up.

Ohthedaffodils · 16/03/2026 16:15

I’m a dog owner and I’d never do this. Did u do it because you don’t want to walk with a poo bag in your hand to the nearest public bin?
Thats selfish behaviour.
Oh and I’ve put poo bags in my own bin and when they’ve been emptied the poo bags remained in the bin. I had to fish it out.

TheQueenOfTheNight · 16/03/2026 16:15

Crikey, I wouldn't put a dog poo bag in my own bin never mind a stranger's. I always use a public bin. You can't put things in private bins without permission.

Probably a good idea to do it every time.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 16/03/2026 16:15

The sense of entitlement amongst dog owners is huge!

This is gross and I’m not surprised the chap was cross. Those of us without dogs don’t have to accept your way of putting your wants (not needs) first. I assume if it wasn’t bin day you would had a more appropriate solution? Stick to that in the future.

Strawberryfruitstarburst · 16/03/2026 16:16

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 16/03/2026 16:05

In my opinion, absolutely you were. Its not for you to decide whether your shit of all things should go anywhere near other people's things.

As it was emptied the bag could easily split and got all over the handles while you waltzed shit free down the road

Waltzed shit free is a fab line 😂

newornotnew · 16/03/2026 16:16

Yeah, you did the wrong thing.

It doesn't matter if other people would be fine with it - you overstepped a known boundary. It's his bin, it's up to him.

Firtreefiona · 16/03/2026 16:16

caffeinedependent · 16/03/2026 16:09

I don't get the outrage, I would have done the same if the bins were out on the street waiting to be emptied. Also, technically bins aren't people's properties either, they belong to the council, so I think everyone needs to take a step back and stop being so petty.

Are you a dog person? If you don’t pick up poo regularly or don’t have kids in nappies or other caring responsibilities poo isn’t something you see regularly and the idea of a stranger’s (or their dog’s) poo in your landfill bin is utterly disgusting.

CarlaH · 16/03/2026 16:16

Our bin men just reach in and take out the bin sacks. Other crap that random people passing by have dropped into our bin stays there, at the bottom, where it can't easily be reached.

I suppose if people don't use bin liners then the bins have to be emptied by loading the bin on to the bin lorry but everybody around here uses bin sacks.

BiscoffCheesecakes · 16/03/2026 16:17

It would not bother me in the slightest. I honestly couldn't care less

Spaghettea · 16/03/2026 16:17

We own our bins and have to pay for them. My bin contains about 3 big black bags a week, no random other bits in there. And certainly no tiddly bags of dog mess.

Passingthrough123 · 16/03/2026 16:17

I would never dream of doing that as a dog owner! He was right to be cross. You should've taken it home.

canklesmctacotits · 16/03/2026 16:18

Was it beneath you to fling into into the bin lorry with a "thanks!".

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/03/2026 16:18

I wouldn't dare put my dogs poo in someone's else's bin.

ACynicalDad · 16/03/2026 16:18

One of my neighbours told me he’d spotted someone doing it to my bin. I told him I didn’t care. I have no problem with it, especially people who leave their bins out all week. I’ve seen people pick it up outside my house open the window and shouted and tell them to use our bin, it’s getting emptied anyway. I’ve also thrown it in the back of a bin lorry which OP could have done.

Boomer55 · 16/03/2026 16:18

Yes you were out of order. What makes you think other people need your dog’s shit? 🤮🙄

Piglet89 · 16/03/2026 16:18

Don’t the contents of the public bins specifically for dog shit get incinerated?

@AgnesMcDooI am guessing you’ve never had to scrub out your bin after some filthy dog owner lifted the lid and dumped a bag of their dog’s shit in the empty bin (ie before we the home owners put any bagged waste in there), the bag then broke and the dog shit was all over your bin.

Christ those people are absolute scum.
