To put dog mess in a strangers bin?

AnnaQuayRules · 16/03/2026 16:01

I normally would never dream of doing this. However, today I was walking my dog along a road when he decided to crap on the grass verge. So of course I picked it up and bagged it.

It was bin day and everyone's bins were outside their houses. The bin lorry turned into the street and so, as it approached, I popped the bag into the nearest bin which was collected almost immediately.

However the man in the house came storming out and started shouting at me. He said I had no right to put anything in his bin. It got worse when I tried to explain, especially as he hadn't realised it was a dog bag. So I apologised and moved off with him still shouting down the road.

I would never have placed anything in anyone's bin whilst it's on their property, but these bins are all on the pavement waiting to be emptied. It was about 3/4 full, I placed the bag on top of what was there and the whole bin was emptied within about 60 seconds.

Was I really out of order?

I would go batshit bambarta if someone dumped dog-do in my bin, especially since I've newly wallpapered and carpeted it, and installed state-of-the-art A/C and air-freshening system.

My bin is also fully internet-equipped so footage of you doing the deed would immediately be uploaded to YouTube, X, the local police station, NATO, the UN and the Daily Mail.

marzipanoranges · 16/03/2026 16:44

To be honest I wouldn’t have cared if you had put it in my bin!

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 16/03/2026 16:45

Oh OP (if this is real and I suspect not) you must surely know that this isn't the place to ask this question!!

How can anyone possibly think that someone charging out of their house and shouting at you is normal behaviour? It's complete insanity.

And as I always say on these threads, my mum (the same as many elderly people) became obsessed with the contents of her bin as she got older and started developing dementia. A normal, non-demented/mentally ill person would not give the contents of their bin much thought.

I say this as someone who always picks up poo and puts it in the bin.

Pistachiocake · 16/03/2026 16:45

I'd be annoyed if you came on my property/if the bin wasn't due to be collected for weeks. Otherwise, it wouldn't bother me personally, but then I'd be at work so I would never know you'd done it.
My mum did something similar with nappies once, but the homeowner worked so they wouldn't have known. Wouldn't do this myself though.

Gloriia · 16/03/2026 16:45

As everyone else has said this is gross and taking the piss op. Wheelie bins are for the residents of the house they are outside.

There are bins for public use everywhere. Use them.

Pineappleice43 · 16/03/2026 16:48

I get your thought process but it wasn't your bin to put rubbish in let alone dog poo. You should always take it home with you and put it in your own bin. Would you put a child's dirty nappy in someone else's bin in the street?

MyThreeWords · 16/03/2026 16:48

In one sense you didn't do anything wrong, @AnnaQuayRules , because objectively the bin owner would not have been left worse off. I do believe that when the bins are machine-emptied by being hooked onto a tipping mechanism on the back of the lorry, we can feel confident that they will be fully emptied. And a bag left as you describe won't have dirtied the bin.

But in another sense, you were unreasonable: Our sense of disgust often isn't tied precisely to the level of objective risk of contamination. It is shaped by evolution, which has programmed a rather excessive avoidance of all things associated with offensive material. (For example, it disgusts me to sit on a toilet seat that is still warm from the previous occupant, even though that warmth is not indicative of any additional hazard.)

It is a completely reasonable expectation, on the part of bin owners, that other people should not use their private bins in a way that commonly triggers disgust , even if they do so in a way that is not objectively hazardous.

So, I think you were wrong to use his bin, but also that you shouldn't be too hard on yourself about it. Just treat it as a lesson learned for the future and move on.

I have only read page one, but to buck the trend I do not think you were being unreasonable as it was bin day and the bins were already on the street.

I agree with others that finding a stranger's poo bag in your bin is not pleasant, but in the scheme of things it is hardly a capital crime.

For what it's worth, I've also been known to pop an empty Costa cup into someone's bin when there were no public bins and I was confident noone from MN was around to see. 😱

AnnaQuayRules · 16/03/2026 16:21

Thanks for all your replies. I accept that I was in the wrong. I've never done it before and now I'll never do it again.

No you weren't in the wrong but you shouldn't do it again for your own safety. You never know when one of these lunatics is watching you from behind their curtains!

BeagleHound1 · 16/03/2026 16:50

You were totally fine. I have also done this though given the outrage I will think twice in future. A bin isn’t exactly pristine anyway.

Ffobele · 16/03/2026 16:52

It would never occur to me to get upset about this.

Besafeeatcake · 16/03/2026 16:53

Yeah so it's a bin. Who cares. I have no issue whatsoever if someone put their dog poo which was in a bag in my bin if the lorry was approaching.

Besides, the bins are owned by the council and it is on public land so actually you haven't broken any rules or done anything wrong.

Friendlygingercat · 16/03/2026 16:53

I can never understand why some people are so bloody recious about their bin once its been left out for collection.

A relative was walking along and took out the last cigarette from a packet. It was bin day so he threw the empty pack in the nearest bin. It was the correcrt bin for paper/card and the bins were out along the pavement. The women took it out and threw it in the road and yelled something after him. He took no notice. Would it have been better to throw litter in the street?

SingleSexSpacesInSchools · 16/03/2026 16:34

All bins smell. That's what bins are for.

Do you perfume your bin?

You can buy special deodorising disinfectant powder for bins.
I used to use it.
Also many people near here pay for a bin cleaning service.
A man with a power washer jet hose comes round.
I think bins will have to have a locking device soon.
Once they start charging by weight.
There is already the problem of passers by contaminating the bin with the wrong type of waste.
Most unfair to blame the householder for this.
The collectors can refuse to empty the bin if it has the wrong contents.

Gloriia · 16/03/2026 16:54

'And a bag left as you describe won't have dirtied the bin'

No matter how fantastic the mechanism is for emptying bins contents can burst and unless bin liners are used there could be dog crap all inside the bin.

It's like people who leave their shit bags on a path or hanging from a fence. Just put them in a council bin! It isn't rocket science.

Aniceempirebiscuitandacupoftea · 16/03/2026 16:55

You were unlucky to get caught but it wasn’t a nice thing to do. YWBVU.

ScribblingPixie · 16/03/2026 16:55

The bin van was coming round the corner? Can't see the problem. I wouldn't have minded if it were my bin.

crazycrazycat · 16/03/2026 16:56

someone kept doing this to me, putting bags of dog shit in my bin, it caused maggots all over my front door, I don't have a dog and shouldn't be dealing with that.

This is very true I'd have also been out like a shot and chucked the crap bag at the op Grin.

This wouldn’t have bothered me, but your last sentence is just you being contrary. The options aren’t someone else’s bin or chucking it on the street.

Viviennemary · 16/03/2026 16:57

You have got an absolute nerve doing this. Take your own muck home with you or put it in a bin designated for that. Disgusting and selfish.

Womaninhouse17 · 16/03/2026 16:59

Even if the bin isn't on their property at the time, it's still their bin. I wouldn't like anyone dumping dog poo bags in my bin, even though rationally it doesn't really matter.

It would have been better to put the empty packet in his pocket and take it home, or put it in a public bin. I can't understand why you think the only alternative is to chuck it in the street.

Alpacajigsaw · 16/03/2026 17:02

YABU

I’d not be happy if someone put shit in my bin. You were a CF.
