To put dog mess in a strangers bin?

I normally would never dream of doing this. However, today I was walking my dog along a road when he decided to crap on the grass verge. So of course I picked it up and bagged it.

It was bin day and everyone's bins were outside their houses. The bin lorry turned into the street and so, as it approached, I popped the bag into the nearest bin which was collected almost immediately.

However the man in the house came storming out and started shouting at me. He said I had no right to put anything in his bin. It got worse when I tried to explain, especially as he hadn't realised it was a dog bag. So I apologised and moved off with him still shouting down the road.

I would never have placed anything in anyone's bin whilst it's on their property, but these bins are all on the pavement waiting to be emptied. It was about 3/4 full, I placed the bag on top of what was there and the whole bin was emptied within about 60 seconds.

Was I really out of order?

Our bin men just reach in and take out the bin sacks. Other crap that random people passing by have dropped into our bin stays there, at the bottom, where it can't easily be reached.

I suppose if people don't use bin liners then the bins have to be emptied by loading the bin on to the bin lorry but everybody around here uses bin sacks.

The wheelie bins get "hooked" onto the back of the bin lorry and all the contents are tipped straight in. The only bin the bin collectors check is the recycling to make sure you haven't put any non recycling in it

You probably were a bit unreasonable but I genuinely don’t get the outrage about it. Much rather that than you leaving it on the pavement and I probably secretly judge people who get so worked up about a bin on bin day.

if the bins had already bin emptied, then someone might have a genuine point (especially in summer).

AnnaQuayRules · 16/03/2026 16:14

Well, that was my thinking. But clearly almost everyone else thinks I'm being unreasonable. I really thought that, because the bag would be in there for at most 60 seconds, it wouldn't be an issue. Obviously I misread the situation

It's about boundaries.

That's what entitlement is - ignoring the other person's right to set their own boundaries.

This was a small matter, but he was cross because you trampled over a boundary.

You assume it would be in there for 60 seconds. A poster last week was rightly complaining about this kind of situation as the binmen on her road don't tip the bins up, they remove the individual bag from the bins and as a result she keeps being left with someone else's dog poo in her bin.
If the binmen were as close as you say you could have approached them yourself rather than involving anyone else.

AnnaQuayRules · 16/03/2026 16:20

@Piglet89 of course I would never put anything in an empty bin.

People are weirdly possessive of their bins. I don't care if people put stuff in my bin; it's a fucking bin. I don't get my bin washed; it's a fucking bin. Who cares if it smells a bit or if someone else's rubbish is in it.

I'd rather people just used it, especially if it means they don't just drop stuff on the road.

Dog shit is a bit of a different case, but if you could literally see the bin was about to be collected then meh, that's fine.

AnnaQuayRules · 16/03/2026 16:21

Thanks for all your replies. I accept that I was in the wrong. I've never done it before and now I'll never do it again.

That used to happen here but it doesn't any more. They have changed what they do.

They have a larger bin into which the sacks are placed and then that bin is upended into the bin lorry.

The bin collectors won't put anything in the lorry that's not in the bin, because there is a risk of they put their hands near the lorry. I learned that when I ran out one day with the bag from the kitchen bin which I'd forgotten to put in the wheelie bin. They said they weren't allowed to

It's not as bad as just dropping into a random bin on a driveway. But I find the language interesting. Whenever a dog owner on MN dumps a sack of shit in someone else's bin, they always "pop" it in. Minimising every time.

Ginburee · 16/03/2026 16:24

My bin is about 3 metres from the pavement and always filled with people's shitty dog bags.
I get really cross at this too, stink up your ow bin.

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 16/03/2026 16:24

@Lomonald haha in our house they'd always be referred to as dogshit lady

DappledThings · 16/03/2026 16:24

This falls under the heading of things I wouldn't be in the least bit bothered about if it happened to me but I would never risk doing in case of someone kicking off as happened to OP.

YANBU in the circumstances you describe where bins were being collected instantly but afraid YABU to think there wasn't a strong possibility you'd be busted by one of the NIMB crowd

It doesn’t matter TBH: as I think you’ve now accepted, you just should not put dog shit into other folk’s bins. I don’t mind if people put other kinds of rubbish in there like crisp packets or plastic bottles, but dog mess is distinguishable: it’s absolutely filthy, smells revolting and is riddled with disease. There are other options for binning it and if I had a dog, I’d make sure I used a public bin.

Edited

I actually spend some time making sure I don't make my bin filthy because I am too tight to pay for it to be cleaned, and in the summer it would reek if stuff was just thrown in there willy-nilly and I don't want to have to jet wash it all the time.

So no throwing unbagged food in there to rot and stink, making sure stuff that might attract a herd of the local cats is well bagged and won't split apart.

So someone dumping a bag of shit in it (that I unless inspecting closely would not know a) how strong a bag it was or b) how well it was tied up) would not be encouraged.

I don't get the outrage, I would have done the same if the bins were out on the street waiting to be emptied. Also, technically bins aren't people's properties either, they belong to the council, so I think everyone needs to take a step back and stop being so petty.

It’s not about the bin, it’s how the contents are put in. Where I used to live, bin men always opened the lid first to have a quick glance that things were bagged (big bags) properly. They’d leave any bins which had loose bags on top. Trouble is, it’s not always the householders fault - it’s passers by. Happened to me - full bin didn’t get emptied for another two weeks, plus you have to add the small dog poo bag to a big bag. Where I live now, each black bag has to be secure as they take them out of traditional round bins, no space for wheelie bins. However, I wouldn’t have gone crazy at OP but would’ve explained.

AnotherHormonalWoman · 16/03/2026 16:27

It wouldn't bother me if you put it in my bin in this specific scenario, but I'm a dog owner with my own dog's poo in my bin.

Much though I've been tempted, I wouldn't put it in anybody else's bin, I do think that's a line not to cross.

Likewise though, in the specific scenario you described, he was OTT in his response which would make me want to do it again in the future.

Theseventhmagpie · 16/03/2026 16:29

Total dog lover here but what you did OP was disgusting.

DotAndCarryOne2 · 16/03/2026 16:29

Unreasonable. Your dog. Take it home and put it in your own bin.

StephensLass1977 · 16/03/2026 16:29

I have beloved dogs and walk them loads. This happens to me a fair amount, and I've never used a stranger's bin as I know I'd get told off! I either take it home or wait until I see a public bin.

I agree that's awful. As I said, I only did it as the bin was literally about to be emptied, but I have also said I appreciate I misjudged it.

Take it home and put it in your own bin. Make your own bin smell not someone else's. You must realise you are being vv unreasonable.

Mine was too - and my recycling often had old kebab trays slung on top so bin men wouldn’t take. You’d get the sign of shame tagged to it “contaminated contents - please empty and dispose” and sometimes even a letter in the post with a “how to recycle” leaflet that went straight in the recycling 🤣

SatsumaDog · 16/03/2026 16:31

If it comes out of your dog’s arse it belongs to you. You carry it until you can put it in a bin allocated for that purpose or you take it home. It doesn’t go in someone else’s bin, in the middle of the pavement, in the gutter, on someone’s garden wall, hanging off a tree or any of the other bizarre place people think it’s acceptable to leave their pet’s shit.

I agree. I dont see it as a problem in those circumstances as the poo bag wouldn’t be in the bin long enough to stink it out.
