To put dog mess in a strangers bin?

AnnaQuayRules · 16/03/2026 16:01

I normally would never dream of doing this. However, today I was walking my dog along a road when he decided to crap on the grass verge. So of course I picked it up and bagged it.

It was bin day and everyone's bins were outside their houses. The bin lorry turned into the street and so, as it approached, I popped the bag into the nearest bin which was collected almost immediately.

However the man in the house came storming out and started shouting at me. He said I had no right to put anything in his bin. It got worse when I tried to explain, especially as he hadn't realised it was a dog bag. So I apologised and moved off with him still shouting down the road.

I would never have placed anything in anyone's bin whilst it's on their property, but these bins are all on the pavement waiting to be emptied. It was about 3/4 full, I placed the bag on top of what was there and the whole bin was emptied within about 60 seconds.

Was I really out of order?

I can't understand why people don't care if their bin is dirty or smelly.
I don't want something like that near my front door and that I have to interact with frequently by lifting the lid.
The more I read of other people's standards or lack of them concerning their own bins the greater my objection to anyone putting anything in my bin.
No one should touch it except this household and the licensed waste disposal operatives.

It’s meant for rubbish!
In this case the rubbish was removed almost instantly.
But of course let’s trot out the usual ‘low standards’ guff to make us feel morally superior.

This thread is one of the most batshit (dogshit) crazy things I've read.

There are some people who have maggots crawling around in their bins because they’ve never, ever washed them out. Ever. All manner of food stains and splatters in there. It doesn’t bother them though. Bins, especially during the summer, if not cleaned regularly, reek to high heaven. They, then, want to drag everyone down to that same standard by throwing dog poo in others’ bins.

Food stains? In the bin? What a travesty!

There’s no food stains in my bin, because I don’t put food in it. Food waste is bagged and in the food waste bin. Recycling is in the recycling bin. Everything else is required to be in black plastic that takes a million years to biodegrade. I don’t put sharp things in the bin either because I don’t want to harm the bin men. So no, my bin doesn’t have food stains, it doesn’t have maggots, it doesn’t ’stink to high heaven’ in any season. I don’t need to clean the bin because I behave properly in the first place. And if someone needs to dispose of a bagged dogshit, they can put it in my bin.

Some of you people are absolutely batshit.

Coulddowithanap · 17/03/2026 22:51

I wouldn't mind if someone put bagged dog poo in our bin, and if it's about to be emptied then put what you like in our bins (as long as it's in the correct bin, recycling in recycling bin etc!)

I've actually had someone offer to put my dogs poo in their bin as I walked down their road and they were just putting their bin out.

All of this. My small food bin I sometimes wash out if the one of the biodegradable food waste bags has split but that's pretty rare in itself.

There's nothing that needs washing out of the main bin. Are people putting stuff in their bins in bags that are continually splitting or something?

That’s all well and lovely for you, but the majority of the population don’t have your hygiene standards. Perhaps you could put a BIG ASS sign on your bin encouraging people to dispose of their pet waste in YOUR bin. If the bag inadvertently bursts open (oh, but that will never happen because in the history of the world never has any waste bag ever burst open!), then YOU can clean it up.

I’m not sure if you’re trying to imply my hygiene standards are low or high, or why you are so angry about the idea of a burst rubbish bag. Sure it happens occasionally and it’s bloody annoying, but the intensity of feeling you and some others are putting into it? No, I’ve got more important things to worry about.

Then go worry about them. Who’s forcing you to post on this thread? Some people are so weird.

We have 5 different bins. If you had put it in the wrong one, it wouldn’t get collected for another 3 weeks. I would be raging at you !

Superfurryhamster · 18/03/2026 06:05

I’m a dog owner and would never do this. The bag might split, not get emptied out etc

I caught a woman about to put one in my bin a while ago when it was still out front from just being emptied! Athough a simple “hey that’s my bin” sufficed to embarrass her out doing it, there was no need to shout at her

Zanatdy · 18/03/2026 06:16

I have a dog, but I wouldn’t do this no.

JoB1kenobi · 18/03/2026 07:19

I did this once or twice when I had a dog and once my mum came on the walk and went psycho at me for doing so saying how she’d be fuming if it was her!
I, however, feel the complete opposite. There’s so much mess on the paths that I’ve contemplated buying my own bin to put on the lamppost to empty into my own bin.
Anyone (as long as it’s bagged) would be welcome to put the bags in mine. I litter pick too, so I hate rubbish and see huge amounts of bagged waste thrown in bushes.
I stopped doing it as my mum always echoed in my mind as someone with a different perspective.

Tamtim · 18/03/2026 09:47

I don’t understand why she just didn’t wait and throw it in the garbage truck. You couldn’t do that here because garbage trucks aren’t open at the back. The bins are lifted electronically and rubbish dumped in the top.

AnnaQuayRules · 18/03/2026 09:50

@Tamtim do you mean me? The bin lorries here are like yours, you cant throw anything in as they aren't open.

Lolalaboucheridesagain · 18/03/2026 12:18

I think you were perfectly reasonable as the bins were literally there about to be emptied. Obviously going on to someone’s property to use their bin would be VVU, but that’s not what you did. Ignore the insane responses- Mumsnet is bonkers. And forget the horrible shouty man.

Well the op had apparently only ever done this once and this one off was only because the bin wagon was right there ready to empty said bin.

Glad your dm made you mend your ways. Bins are for residents of the property they are parked at, not for communal use. If you saw a bench on someone's driveway or front garden would you have a quick sit if legs were aching, maybe quick grab of a hosepipe to clean muddy boots? No.

Just been out with our dog, whilst it's bin day so lots lined up I managed to hang on to a poo bag all the way to a public bin. The hardship!

Are you able to articulate where the issue lies yet?

Yes hun, I've been very clear.

There are plenty of public bins available

Wheelie bins are not communal, they are designated for the residents of specific properties.

Poo bags can rip spilling contents.

I wouldn't walk past a neighbours bin and empty rubbish from my bag into their wheelie bins let alone poo 🤢.

It's social etiquette, some of us understand it some of us clearly do not. I hope that helps.

I'll make sure I have my ring doorbell alerts on to catch any cheeky fuckers doing it Grin. Mind, we're a nice respectful bunch round here so I'd be very surprised if there was a shit dumper.

Oh yes the spontaneously combusting dog poo bags. Forgot about those.

Ok ‘hun’ whatever it takes to help you feel morally superior.

Piglet89 · 18/03/2026 18:08

@samspotatothey don’t need to be “spontaneously combustible”. They just need to break. Which they do: as I have said upthread, I have had shit all over my bin three times which I had to clean after people put their bags of shit in my bin.

Each time, I just thought: I mean, who raised these folk, that they think this is acceptable?

I don't get the outrage, I would have done the same if the bins were out on the street waiting to be emptied. Also, technically bins aren't people's properties either, they belong to the council, so I think everyone needs to take a step back and stop being so petty.

Surely a bin is a bin, and if it’s bagged and tied and the bin lorry is in sight and about to empty it why does it matter? I would do the same. That bag of poop will be in that bin for a matter of minutes before it’s in the bin lorry. Some people really need to get a grip. Better than not picking it up so someone steps in it.

I find it more sad there are people stood in the window of their houses and taking far too much notice in what is going on outside.
A lot of hobbies are free, and I think they need to get one.

As a dog owner there's no such thing as a securely bagged dog crap thh, fingers go through them so very easily so it is not beyond the realms of possibility that there could be something in the person's bin that could easily rip a bag causing crap to spill.

There are public bins everywhere. Use them.

Are you someone who saves by getting economy nappy sacks instead of dog waste bags? Because that’s the only reason why your fingers could go through a bag. Wrong tool for the job. Never had any kind of bag failure nor has my DH and he’s a dog walker. He picks up a lot of dog mess every day. Like another said, decent bags.
