To put dog mess in a strangers bin?

I normally would never dream of doing this. However, today I was walking my dog along a road when he decided to crap on the grass verge. So of course I picked it up and bagged it.

It was bin day and everyone's bins were outside their houses. The bin lorry turned into the street and so, as it approached, I popped the bag into the nearest bin which was collected almost immediately.

However the man in the house came storming out and started shouting at me. He said I had no right to put anything in his bin. It got worse when I tried to explain, especially as he hadn't realised it was a dog bag. So I apologised and moved off with him still shouting down the road.

I would never have placed anything in anyone's bin whilst it's on their property, but these bins are all on the pavement waiting to be emptied. It was about 3/4 full, I placed the bag on top of what was there and the whole bin was emptied within about 60 seconds.

Was I really out of order?

I can't understand why people don't care if their bin is dirty or smelly.
I don't want something like that near my front door and that I have to interact with frequently by lifting the lid.
The more I read of other people's standards or lack of them concerning their own bins the greater my objection to anyone putting anything in my bin.
No one should touch it except this household and the licensed waste disposal operatives.

We’ve had the same bins for over ten years we put household rubbish and bagged dog poo from our two dogs. We have never had a split bag and we have never washed our bin. I’ve just taken this photo and it doesn’t smell either, it was emptied yesterday.

It was a bit sad that he was stood there watching you out of the window. Who has time or inclination to do that?

Once someone put dog poop in my bin. Wouldn't have particularly minded except the bin had already been emptied! And I wasn't stood there at the window watching them.

Well the op had apparently only ever done this once and this one off was only because the bin wagon was right there ready to empty said bin.

Glad your dm made you mend your ways. Bins are for residents of the property they are parked at, not for communal use. If you saw a bench on someone's driveway or front garden would you have a quick sit if legs were aching, maybe quick grab of a hosepipe to clean muddy boots? No.

Just been out with our dog, whilst it's bin day so lots lined up I managed to hang on to a poo bag all the way to a public bin. The hardship!

Your sarcasm doesn’t bother me, I carried mine home & other people’s. I have also picked up other people’s dog poo. Im
not the bad guy here!
I too only did it on full bin day, where I live they only go out of bin day, and wouldn’t have dreamt of strolling up to an empty bin on someone’s property.
she only done it once as was caught out, she would continue to have done it.
Oh and, still now, if it’s bin day and they’re full, and there’s rubbish on the floor, I pick it up and put it in a bin now. Just not poo anymore.
I also pick litter off peoples drive if I’m litter picking. I care about the community.

I realise that we feel differently and my ways aren’t ‘mended’ as I said, I’d much rather people use my bin than hang it off a bush or chuck it in, which many do as I’m on a dog walking path.

Not currently a dog owner, but wouldn’t dream of doing this. You should have taken it home with you or put it in a public bin.

IamnotSethRogan · 19/03/2026 07:47

I would have absolutely no problem with people putting bagged dog poo in my bin. I'm just happy when people actually pick it up and bag it.

Especially if the bin was about tk be collected that day.

I don't know why people are so precious about their bins.

Well, good for you 🙄but totally irrelevant because it wasn't your bin they used!

Not irrelevant at all as she is siding with the OP

I don't get the outrage, I would have done the same if the bins were out on the street waiting to be emptied. Also, technically bins aren't people's properties either, they belong to the council, so I think everyone needs to take a step back and stop being so petty.

This is exactly what I came to say - would you rather she left the pile of shit on the street??

Unclench everyone!

As has clearly been said throughout she should have used communal usage public bins or taken her shit home, not used designated residents own private bins.

But not everyone agrees

Whosthetabbynow · 20/03/2026 13:24

We had our bin bags out ready for collection and I noticed that some tramp had chucked a dog shit bag on top of them. Lazy cunt

RvLl · 20/03/2026 13:27

Dog shit smells, quickly. Even when bagged. I don’t even put my own dog’s shit in my bin. I absolutely hate it when dog walkers use my bin - so much so that I’ve paid for a sticker to go on the bin saying not to do it.

you were unreasonable. I keep my bin interior clean and use strong bin liners that don’t break because I sometime need to get bags out and go to the tip. Our collections are once every 3 weeks. I don’t want dog shit bags touching the interior of my bin because I may have to put a bag in my car. Foul. Sorry. I wouldn’t have shouted at you but it would have aggravated me.

Well the person whose bin it was certainly didn’t agree.

LadyVioletBridgerton · 20/03/2026 13:37

Gross. Another entitled dog owner.

TheSoapyFrog · 20/03/2026 13:42

YABU and I would have been angry with you. I don't know the rules where you are, but if the refuse collectors see there is rubbish in the bin which isn't in a bin bag, it won't be collected.

MagnusSkipton · 20/03/2026 14:03

If the bin was about to be emptied YANBU but if it would’ve been there for any significant length of time YABU. I’ve had to move my bin and hide it as dog walkers were ducking into my drive to put a couple of bags a day into it. It was absolutely disgusting 🤢.

That's not the case where we live. The refuse collectors don't touch anything in the bin, the bin is lifted up by the mechanism on the lorry and emptied.

Why though? It's just a bin!? 😂
