Is something about to happen?

I’m a fairly anxious person, so it could be that, but I keep seeing on different Sm planforms, people saying it feels like similar to before covid lockdown and that something is about to happen.

Does anyone else feel this?

I am assuming you are worried because of what's going on in Iran/The Middle East?

I'm not worried. The UK/world has been through far worse.

I'm guessing you are quite young @Canyoumakecoffeeinamicrowave ?

I don't mean that as patronising or condescending, but everyone I know around my age (older Gen X/around late 50s) and older, is not worried, as we have seen/been through worse. It tends to be younger millennials and GenX who are catastrophising.

I’m Xennial

It can happen anywhere, this is my point

Your point is you’re scared that anything can happen anywhere?

I mean, an Albanian drug dealing gang member might kick your door down and beat you to death but I suspect you don’t constantly think about that?!

Conundrummum123 · 09/03/2026 13:50

That’s you though, there may be people on 2 yr fixes or with 1 year left and they need to have their eyes open. In fact all of us do, some may pay down capital balance whilst on a favourable rate.

well people might wait until the end of their term not knowing you can secure a rate up to 6 months before. Not everyone knows this

I don’t know why you are downplaying how significant mortgage rates are, for most people it’s their largest expense

My point was they'd already be looking at rates so they don't need some random poster telling them to do the bloody obvious.

You stated all homeowner need to watch the rates - well no the ones who own the house outright don't and those with years left before changing mortgage product don't. So your statement was plain wrong.

You might need to watch mortage rates - but no idea if OP need do - given she may be renting or on a fixed rate or in the 55% who owner occupied who own outright.

Last mortgage rate hike the media acted like it was the 90s mortgage market - rates affects are much slower to take affect.

Also I have no idea why you are assuming I'm saying mortgages aren't a huge outgoing - of course they are it's why most people these days fix for stablity and keep an eye on the rates as the need arises and undertand rates go up and down over years anyway.

You might need to be keeping an eye on the rates - which is unlucky timing if coming off a fixed rate soon or bad planning if you hadn't realise rising rates could adversly affect you or part of the risk you took with variable rates - but don't assume that everyone is in your situation.

Most homeowers don't need to worry about mortgage rates at the moment.

It's already happened, hasn't it? Trump has lit WW3.

Well yes exactly but where will it go from here

H1ppychicken · 09/03/2026 14:20

I think it is normal to feel that sinking something is about to happen (especially given all that’s happening in the world right now and the feeling that anything could happen next) but if you are getting this largely from social media then maybe you should give yourself a social media break and concentrate on things you can control?

CharlotteRumpling · 09/03/2026 14:20

Canyoumakecoffeeinamicrowave · 09/03/2026 14:18

Nobody knows really.

Terfedout · 09/03/2026 14:22

Wtaf are you even going on about here? What is going to happen? How can you possibly be anxious about something when you don't even know what that something is? Absolutely bonkers. I can't even pretend to be understanding about such nonsense before the be kind brigade get started.

Justchillinhere · 09/03/2026 14:28

I worry about nothing in the news, don't watch it, try to read just basic info, yes a lot of bad things happen, but we as little people we can't change anything, every day is a blessing, grateful to just be able to breathe, have friends, family, work and enjoy the nature around us

Ridiculous

I’m a fairly anxious person

If this is the case, I would keep off of SM as much as possible as it is not going to help your anxiety at all.

Conundrummum123 · 09/03/2026 14:30

Ridiculous

Hit too soon as said they need to be eyes open that obviously doesn’t apply to people who own their house outright

it also does apply to people who have w longer fixes because they may be able to over pay to prevent any rate shock

Endofyear · 09/03/2026 14:39

It's your anxiety that is making you feel like this - when mine is bad, I have a sense of impending doom like something bad is going to happen.

Best advice is stay off social media and don't watch the news. There are always awful things going on in the world and this middle east thing is just the latest. Yes it will affect us in terms of fuel prices and maybe a shortage of certain imported goods but it's unlikely to be more than that. Wars are horrible and hopefully this one will be over soon. Until then, don't doom scroll, get out in the fresh air and enjoy life as best you can x

Itsmetheflamingo · 09/03/2026 14:14

How could they get a missile here? They’re bombing their neighbours because they cat reach any further away

plus why would they want to bomb the uk?

do you remember all the scare mongering about Putin who was obviously going to sail a nuke over the whole of Europe to blow up our little island? Didn’t come to anything either did it? And we actually helped lead the Ukraine resistance to him 😭

Aren't UK flying bomber jets over Iran ? I read they have ICBMs capable of reaching UK.

Of course Russia wasn't going to nuke us. They have no reason to

ChubbyPuffling · 09/03/2026 14:41

It can indeed happen anywhere, the lady who runs our local toddler play sessions talks about the day things changed in Syria... she was a midwife, her hospital was bombed, her life imploded and she took 4 months travelling to get here (where her sister was studying).

Here, it is much less likely to become a front line issue, but... why do we think Trump took control of Venezuelan oil, told Texas to pump, pump, pump... just a few months before unleashing hell on the region that keeps Europe readily supplied with oil and gas. That man is going to increase his personal wealth any which way he can. He will squeeze us til the pips squeak. He is an arse , out for his own gain (and that of those who control him.)

Amba1998 · 09/03/2026 14:42

There’s alot of hysteria. But I can’t see much happening other than long queues are petrol stations because people like to panic buy al a toilet roll gate of 2020

tara66 · 09/03/2026 14:44

I guess it will be a firm ''NO'' to the Nobel Peace Prize now.

Unpaidviewer · 09/03/2026 14:45

I get what you mean OP. I think many PPs are being unnecessarily cruel when you have said you're generally quite anxious.

Personally I'm not worried about WW3 (have seen a few posts about this). Warfare has changed. People keep talking about it like we will be back in the trenches. We are continuously under threat of cyber attacks etc.

I am slightly more concerned about the impact on oil prices, GDP etc. If inflation rises again I know people will struggle more but I don't see how we can raise benefits or increases taxes to cover them.

I know everything feels very uncertain right now. All you can do if turn the news off amd get outside more.

Itsmetheflamingo · 09/03/2026 14:45

Enyastar · 09/03/2026 13:39

I suggest you watch the news today. Oil prices have gkne through the roof since Fri

The data I’m talking about I get through my job- for hedging purposes specific to the uk. The price of oil world wide is just one peice of information

The price of oil in general isn’t the whole story of the impact. There is an oversupply of oil
to the market, once transport issues are “resolved” (ie avoiding the strait of Hormuz) things should calm.

BlueJuniper94 · 09/03/2026 14:46

No. And I am open to persuasion. Poor low effort post.

There. It happened. You can move on with your day now ☀️

Congratulations! That is big news. I hope you're feeling much better 😆

I have logged out imstagram and Tiktok for a while. I think the algorythms are particularly damaging for our mental health. It will know when your attention has been drawn to a certain post and keep producing more and more. At one point my whole feed was people my age who are terminally ill and my health anxiety was through the roof.
I add the content for my work place so am still on FB and I am having so many war posts come up. I have been reading posts on MN about war so I guess that is why that is happening.

Gen X survived the Cold War, Thatcher, playing in abandoned industrial sites, Spangles (if you know, you know 😉), Chorlton & The Wheelies, random pockets of diesel filled water, and regular beatings with leather belts 💪🏻

We got this 😊

I grew up in Chorlton in the 60s/70s and remember all those things. You've taken me back.😀

FlimsyMimsy · 09/03/2026 15:03

ChangePrivacyQuestion · 09/03/2026 12:43

Well, countries are starting to impose fuel price caps (South Korea, Croatia, others to follow). Should this get protracted, it MIGHT lead to fuel rationing, due to supply/demand issues, 70s style, so getting stuck wfh due to lack of transport options is conceivable. There's a few parallels to Suez crisis here.

And what about people who do mobile jobs that involve driving?

I don't take much notice of SM (only on here and occasionally look at FB) but I do listen to Radio 4 news and other BBC programmes. I think the news today with the new Ayatollah named and the suspicion that it was America that hit a girls school is worrying. Also it's worrying that oil prices have shot up. I'm just hoping that things will calm down and sense will prevail - but with Donald Trump in charge, that's not inevitable.
