Is something about to happen?

I’m a fairly anxious person, so it could be that, but I keep seeing on different Sm planforms, people saying it feels like similar to before covid lockdown and that something is about to happen.

Does anyone else feel this?

OP posts:

Sadly not 'post war' yet as it's all still kicking off.

😅 wishful thinking on my behalf! (Wouldn't it be lovely if we could just cut the crap and have peace again!)

Lol, are you sure?

WWII
WWI
Boer War
Crimean War
Napoleonic Wars
Various invasions, the last by the Dutch
The restoration
The Commonwealth
The Spanish Armada
The Cousins War

Im working backwards but theres plenty more even before that lot.

Country on a knife edge each time.

This is simply more of the same.

Let’s not be silly and compare 2026 to the Spanish Armada.

my comment was in relation to the comment said that there’s always things around the world and yes there are, but not all of them impact our economy and our cost of living right now, but this one has and will!

and as much as the burying head in the sand method may work for some, home owners need to go in eyes open! Esp if your on a fix now, you need to be thinking what can I do to prevent my bill sky rocketing. Can you pay down the capital balance? Can you switch now? Etc maybe you do have an erc but maybe it’s only 1%. All things to be very eyes open about.

MyOpalCat · 09/03/2026 13:03

The Middle east currently dealing with a war and that is and will for a while effect oil prices and that will have an effect on econnomies world wide. We've not long had similar shock with Russian/Ukraine war.

Trump president - and that's not going well though so far US hasn't decended into a civil war.

If it an overwhleming sense of doom it's likley your anxiety but when FIL had it it was sign he was about to have a heart attack - so may be worth going to GP just in case.

Why? The park is free, to go for a walk, and sit in. As are most museums. Of course, there may be factors as to whether you enjoy those things, and are able to get to them.

BMW6 · 09/03/2026 13:03

OP there is ALWAYS something terrible happening somewhere!

Stop watching the news and SM for a while

Panic buy now. Beat the price rises, fill your boots and your tanks, stock the larder, get a wind up radio and torch, fill bottles with clean water, find your first aid kit.

Or, you could sit in the garden admiring the daffs. Plan what you will be planting in a few weeks time, cut the grass, read a book, go to work, play with the kids, deal with the fallout IF it happens when it happens.

The Government will give us all free gas and electric to see us through. Banks will give us a mortgage holiday of six months with no penalty. What else? Betcha they will! 😊Great little country we live in all the same.

They won’t do another 6 months payment holiday no chance lance

WhereIsMyLight · 09/03/2026 13:05

The feeling prior to Covid isn’t really a quantifiable term. Are we talking about the people who locked away early and washed their shopping? Are we talking about the people who could see something was coming, followed the rules but acted quite pragmatically in that they didn’t wash their shopping or leave deliveries in quarantine for weeks? Or the people who felt Covid was a hoax and did what they pleased?

I think you probably mean the first group. They are right in that this is a war that has a big global impact. Shipping lines are disrupted, the costs of goods will increase, stock markets have crashed. However, we’re not looking at conscription. We’re not looking at air raids (here anyway).

Life is generally going to get tougher for everyone (in the UK). Not having your home or child’s school bombed level of tough but people are probably going to go into fuel poverty. Food prices are likely to rise. Cost of getting to work is going to increase. People are going to feel a lot more downtrodden. People will have less money to spend and the economy will retract. The main presiding emotions in Covid were fear and uncertainty. I don’t think that’ll be the case, people will just feel like life is shit and it’s getting shitter and they are getting poorer. Covid had a huge impact on people’s lives and that is still being felt now. People are probably justified in saying this war will have an impact (economically for us) and it’s going to continue for a while.

I disagree with some of the other PPs to say just step away from it. That doesn’t help everyone. Some people need to understand more to actually understand the risk of the truly bad stuff won’t happen.

Rates are going to go up through, price of oil has gone up! Those things aren’t pretty indicative of high inflation meaning the cost of living will get worse.

I was wondering if the OP meant they had a feeling of impending doom personally or for the whole world.
A lot is going on in the world and uncertainties do cause anxiety for many people.

No of course not, not a lockdown, but a similar feeling that something is about to happen-what, I don’t know

Something somewhere is always about to happen/is happening/has happened but there is a very good chance whatever it is/was won't affect you/me

MyOpalCat · 09/03/2026 13:13

home owners need to be eyes open to the change

If it mortage rates we're fixed for next few years like a large part of the mortgage market these days - and due to ageing population many more than in past own houses outright.

If it's council tax or energy prices well those affect people in rented properties as well as rents going ever up which is probbaly not great with eldest looking to graduate this year.

ElectricMagpie · 09/03/2026 13:15

Surprised myself this morning when husband started up the usual Starmer-bashing - "look, can't you leave him to it? The poor sod is trying to save the world"
People don't trust him to take care of the UK, so I guess the idea of him having responsibilities on an even bigger scale is quite unnerving.

Enyastar · 09/03/2026 13:16

No but petrol and diesel is about to become extortionate. Over £100 to fill up average car.

Yeah but this has inverted the yield curve meaning it’s pretty likely that the rates people coming off may be lower than the fixed rates available! We’re now in a rate increase environment

there will also be people coming off fixed rates now that can act pretty quick..

In this instance that analogy is wrong, it will affect us due to inflation, energy prices and mortgage rates

The best gift I gave myself was to stop listening and watching endless news and analyses from talking heads and doom mongers.

OK, I get the headline news every morning and avoid going any deeper into it, but I keep up with the basics.

We will be told to put our heads between our knees and kiss our arses goodbye if it ever reaches that critical juncture. That'll be enough news for me.

It's amazing how light life can be if you ignore most of it. It will happen anyway and there is damn all I can do about it as an individual is there?

Are you me 😆
I keep abreast of current affairs but don't dwell on it because there is literally nothing I can do about it

GoldBthehypo · 09/03/2026 13:23

I do feel like maybe we could be walking i to a recession at some point but too early to say so who knows but I can understand the feeling OP

... not for everyone. We have an EV & solar panels. That's one bullet we dodged. Because no doubt l, these will also be hit by price rises.

Yes smug, but I like to add something positive at least for some people...

Itsmetheflamingo · 09/03/2026 13:26

I don’t understand all these people saying “it feels like before lockdown” wtf?! Covid was creeping here in a perfectly open way a good month before lockdown. You didn’t spidey sense anything. You just got anxious.

it feels quite privileged and attention seeking to be banging on about “something happening” to the uk whilst people thousands of miles away genuinely are waking up to their towns being blown apart. Whilst you fanny around on your phone feeling scared

Itsmetheflamingo · 09/03/2026 13:28

Also in positive news I am getting divorced and quite looking forward to having my assets valued in the next few months rather than a year ago 😁

Carouseloflife · 09/03/2026 13:31

Inflation, hike in petrol prices and interest rates go up and down. It’s part of life and why we try to save for rainy days and not live beyond our means.
The weather affects us too, especially when it looks miserable outside we can feel there’s a cloud hanging over us.
Hopefully the world leaders will get their act together and bring some sort of stability again.
Try and stay hopeful, spring is on its way.
