Is something about to happen?

Canyoumakecoffeeinamicrowave · 09/03/2026 12:13

I’m a fairly anxious person, so it could be that, but I keep seeing on different Sm planforms, people saying it feels like similar to before covid lockdown and that something is about to happen.

Does anyone else feel this?

Something is always happening somewhere at some time

So something big has already happened but equally is just about to happen

Wars and global disruption has been going on since humans had a system of separate kingdoms/countries/states

You just happen to be living under this particular set of circumstances.

But not enough to send our economy into a spiral as we can see now

Rates are going to go up through, price of oil has gone up! Those things aren’t pretty indicative of high inflation meaning the cost of living will get worse.

Yep. Thanks 🍊maniac.

No of course not, not a lockdown, but a similar feeling that something is about to happen-what, I don’t know

You know that there's a war going on right? Just checking...

What a lot of patronising/dismissive replies you've received!

Yes, I totally agree with you. It's so incongruous isn't it, how we plod on? I guess we can't really exist with this level of horror - our brains would fry if we properly digested it each morning.

I was thinking What is the fucking point? as I sorted out my recycling while Iran's oil fields are burning. Life is madness right now.

Yup, we are here drinking through paper straws while the US and Israel are setting the Middle East on fire.

Inflation is probably going to sky rocket thanks to the gruesome twosome Trump and Netanyahu but at least we don't have toxic rain falling down on us like the people they are claiming that they are saving do.

Yup! So if your mortgage is ending switch now because it’s going to get worse

Yeah, fuel is going up so we won't be able to drive and we'll be stuck inside 🙄

Heh I had the same thought.

It's really annoyed me the fuel thing. Greedy fucks.

damelza · 09/03/2026 12:51

The best gift I gave myself was to stop listening and watching endless news and analyses from talking heads and doom mongers.

OK, I get the headline news every morning and avoid going any deeper into it, but I keep up with the basics.

We will be told to put our heads between our knees and kiss our arses goodbye if it ever reaches that critical juncture. That'll be enough news for me.

It's amazing how light life can be if you ignore most of it. It will happen anyway and there is damn all I can do about it as an individual is there?

Its basic supply and demand, the spply has been cut off thanks to the actions of the tangerine

Very lucky not to have that worry. I did fix my energy prices for another year last Monday morning, though. The fix was pulled by Tuesday morning, so feel fortunate.

KidsAndDogsGalore · 09/03/2026 12:56

... well we are finally getting the acknowledgement of the recession that's breed lurking for a while.

.... we are in a post war situation, whatever anyone thinks.
.... and yes, prices for basic things like food, fuel and housing have not peaked yet and won't for some time.

leaflikebrew · 09/03/2026 12:57

Sadly not 'post war' yet as it's all still kicking off.

Lol, are you sure?

WWII
WWI
Boer War
Crimean War
Napoleonic Wars
Various invasions, the last by the Dutch
The restoration
The Commonwealth
The Spanish Armada
The Cousins War

Im working backwards but theres plenty more even before that lot.

Country on a knife edge each time.

This is simply more of the same.

Life isn't so light when I receive my electricity bill or get to the checkout in the supermarket. Unfortunately there are some things that lots of us can't ignore and inflation is one of them.

You need to avoid reading anything that triggers your anxiety OP that’s what’s leading you to think “something might happen” and for what it’s worth I know the feeling. It’s the feeling that something is going to go catastrophically wrong in the world because you’ve been reading about so many horrific world events.

When the government set up that emergency alert on phones a couple of years ago at the same time they suggested having an emergency stockpile of food, bottled water, candles, batteries etc and my severe anxiety led me to believe they knew something we didn’t.
I started reading about Russia and Ukraine war and googled “could there be a nuclear war” which of course led to lots of random “news” sites that said it could happen then chat forums for preppers who believed it was inevitable.

A few months later they showed the film threads for its 40 year anniversary and I spiralled convinced myself it was going to happen.

My best friend has a basement and I insisted we spend a fortune on emergency supplies and kit it out and even led her to believe we were heading for disaster.

I started therapy and stopped looking online and now the feelings of terror have faded to a bit of worry now and then when I see something on the news. Everyone expected the Iran war to trigger me into panic but I have an Iranian DP who kept me calm.

I still have the basement kitted out but it’s likely pointless because we live somewhere that would be a prime target for a bomb so we likely wouldn’t survive the blast. Bizarrely I find that comforting because it’s surviving in a post nuclear war that made me most anxious

The world isn’t a nice place and there is endless awful things to upset you if you keep looking and it won’t prevent it.
Try to live your life without making it miserable yourself and the more you occupy yourself with positive things the easier it gets.
Another good tip is to tell yourself that unless it’s on a reputable news site like sky news or BBC then it’s likely just to be click bait and not worth reading, if something is headline news you’ll find out without searching and if the government cover it up till the last minute or are unaware you won’t find out until it’s on the news.

Luckily we are coming into Spring/summer so heats off and the tumble will be used sparingly.
Its fuel costs that are worrying me...my eldest commutes a fair distance. If it gets too much she'll try and get work nearer home 😕
No doubt food costs will go up again

Most able bodied people have two stalks called legs which grow from their backsides.

Riapia · 09/03/2026 12:58

No more likely than that time when someone contacted the BBC to say that a hurricane was coming.

Markets think a base rate rise by the end of the year we were meant to have 2 cuts! But the situation seems to be getting worse on the daily

Oh Ive got those

What do I do with them, how do they work?

MyThreeWords · 09/03/2026 13:00

There's always something about to happen. Whatever worrying thing happens next, you can use it as the basis for claiming that you had a premonition of disaster.

damelza · 09/03/2026 13:01

Panic buy now. Beat the price rises, fill your boots and your tanks, stock the larder, get a wind up radio and torch, fill bottles with clean water, find your first aid kit.

Or, you could sit in the garden admiring the daffs. Plan what you will be planting in a few weeks time, cut the grass, read a book, go to work, play with the kids, deal with the fallout IF it happens when it happens.

The Government will give us all free gas and electric to see us through. Banks will give us a mortgage holiday of six months with no penalty. What else? Betcha they will! 😊Great little country we live in all the same.

Velvian · 09/03/2026 13:02

I think it's just because it is around the anniversary of the lockdown. Even if you are not consciously acknowledging that, the length of daylight, Easter eggs in the shops will be niggling at you.

It's similar to how you start to feel awful at the time of year you suffered a bereavement or traumatic event.
