Is this illegal?

Discovered someone is cheating on his wife and have contacted two of his siblings to tell them so they can surreptitiously investigate and look out for the wife. I can't prove it as it would be hearsay, but I hoped they'd try and look at his devices or keep an ear out to gain evidence. Have I gone too far? I absolutely know this is happening.

Mumsnet doesn't like that. I'd be accused of blowing her life up, of interfering, told she probably knows anyway, they are swingers, that sort of thing. I thought this way someone could try and find some evidence and then confront him.

Do you often make decisions based on what Mumsnet would say? You don’t have to tell Mumsnet.

Rainydaycat · 04/03/2026 14:25

It’s not illegal. It’s called being “busy”

GreenWheat · 04/03/2026 14:25

It's not illegal, no. But if someone contacted me to say they thought my brother was having an affair and would I care to start snooping through his things looking for evidence to help out his wife, then of course I am going to say no. I would rather just let it surface naturally without me causing a massive rift.

Crunchymum · 04/03/2026 14:19

Are you the person he is having the affair with @CarlStoleMyUnderpants ?

Absolutely not.

It's irrelevant of what, some, MNers think, you've involved yourself in another person's relationship and drag their siblings into it to.
If you've got proof tell her.

You're getting someone else to do the work for you, so in affect by telling the siblings you have already blown up her life.

Had you of seen him with his tongue down some womans throat fine, but to go on hearsay....not fine.

Arlanymor · 04/03/2026 14:29

How horribly embarrassing for the woman to have her two siblings know before her - how is this is right way to approach the situation? I would be mortified if my partner was cheating and the rest of my family knew before me - how humiliating and extra painful. Nothing you have said you have done is illegal, but is it sensitive or sensible? Another question...

It's not her siblings. It's his. I thought they might knock some sense into their stupid brother.

Why are you asking if contacting people is illegal? Is it because you feel grubby and weird? That’s because what you’ve done is grubby and weird.
(unless either of these people have a non-molestation order against you and you’ve ignored it to contact them- in a scorned ‘other woman’ scenario- then yes it would be kind of illegal)

None of those things apply. I asked if it was illegal because of the law against malicious communication.

Why would you think it's illegal to just contact his siblings and tell them something?

There must be more to this than is being let on

Oh so what you want is for them to give him a heads up, then cover it up so the poor wife never finds out? Is that reaaaaalllly what you wanted from this?

From your original post...

Yes, it would be hearsay from me if I said Bill is having an affair, as I cannot prove it, but I can show them how they can prove it. But I did not find out via hearsay. I found out from the horse's mouth, so to speak. I know it is happening. I have seen evidence and it has been going on since 2022.

Then put your energies into contacting him.
Hopefully his siblings don't give him the name of the person that told them.

Then grow some backbone and tell him yourself if you're that interested

SpiralSister · 04/03/2026 14:38

To put it bluntly - what in the name of arse has any of this got to do with you?

No good can come of this meddling. Why have you felt driven to do this? It’s wildly inappropriate to concern your in others affairs like this. And no one will thank you for it.
