If someone called your engagement ring "cute"

Would you think it was a bit bitchy? When showing a friend (who is known for giving backhanded compliments) she said "aww cute".

For reference my ring is a platinum 1.5 carat diamond solitaire and everyone else has said how stunning it is. So certainly not a cheap, small ring.

Would you be offended at this comment?

Oooh a classic mumsnet friendship (both people clearly don’t like each other)

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 01/03/2026 14:15

She means it's small (in her eyes).

AmberSpy · 01/03/2026 14:15

Honestly OP if you're happy with the ring who gives a damn what anyone else thinks? You're the one that will be wearing it. I'm sure there are some people who don't like my engagement ring but I literally could not care less 🤷🏼‍♀️

Janeaway · 01/03/2026 14:16

I think I would wonder if she was trying to say that it was a bit...underwhelming. But 'cute' is used to describe a lot of things these days. If she's generally a good friend, I would let it pass.

angelikacpickles · 01/03/2026 14:16

1.5 carats cute? 🙄

ZenNudist · 01/03/2026 14:16

Drop her

greengreengrass3 · 01/03/2026 14:17

Why do you care, I assume you love it so thats all that matters.
smile & nod

I think she means it’s small. My SIL has an unusual antique e ring but she never talks about it. When I was engaged first was to a Canadian guy and he bought it there I got lots of comments in UK that it was a rock but it really wasn’t.

No I wouldn’t choose to be offended at this comment.

BeaLola · 01/03/2026 14:19

Perhaps she was referencing the fact that you had got engaged - “ aw that’s cute” ?

Butchyrestingface · 01/03/2026 14:19

I'd think she'd been watching too much American TV, where cute is a generic descriptor for 'pretty/beautiful', etc.

I certainly wouldn't feel offended unless there's some kind of backstory.

AffableApple · 01/03/2026 14:19

I couldn't be offended by this, no. Because I'm an adult.

Freya1542 · 01/03/2026 14:20

passive aggressive nonsense, pay absolutely no heed @Engagementringquestion she may well be jealous, especially if it looks somewhat like this 😉

Congratulations 🌸

Drop her

It's a bit mean isn't it? But clever because the word cute can still be used as a positive, so she knew I couldn't call her out on it. It seemed like she was trying to be patronising.

She isn't engaged but is in a long term relationship and wants to get married. I did wonder if she was a teeny bit jealous and this was her way of showing it.

She means it's small. Make of that what you will.

Aww thank you that's very sweet of you.

Why can't women just celebrate each other, I don't understand it.

She has said nothing wrong at all, and you sound like you WANT her to be jealous @Engagementringquestion Wink

I’d just think she was a bitch, as you’ve said she has form for giving backhanded compliments. Friends don’t do that.

edwinbear · 01/03/2026 14:23

Maybe it’s just not to her taste? Not everyone wants a solitaire ring. I couldn’t get worked up about it personally, as long as you love it.

NotMeAtAll · 01/03/2026 14:23

I told my friend her engagement ring was cute recently. She had been looking for something very understated but beautiful.

Tink3rbell30 · 01/03/2026 14:24

No that's not offensive.

Not at all, its just a pattern of her behaviour. I am so happy for my friends and cherise them. This was just another comment, of a fair amount over the years, where she thinks she is superior to others.

Why do you need everyone to tell you it’s stunning?

You two don’t like each other
So can’t understand why you say she’s a friend and why you’d expect her to “celebrate”

You can’t stand her!! She’s not a friend to you and you’re not her friend!
