If someone called your engagement ring "cute"

Engagementringquestion · 01/03/2026 14:12

Would you think it was a bit bitchy? When showing a friend (who is known for giving backhanded compliments) she said "aww cute".

For reference my ring is a platinum 1.5 carat diamond solitaire and everyone else has said how stunning it is. So certainly not a cheap, small ring.

Would you be offended at this comment?

Definitely a passive aggressive little dig on her part. Roll your eyes and forget it. Her problem.

Yes, but many Americanisms are popping up in British English. A lot of posters here write 'mom' instead of 'mum', or 'gotten' instead of 'got'. I was brought up with the word 'cute' meaning young, sweet, appealing, like a puppy or kitten. I was very surprised when I first heard a grown man described as 'cute'.

Both the examples you have used aren't really Americanisms. They're used in various regions of the UK. Mom is common and always has been in some areas. It isnt something that has only happened recently. Gotten has always been used in most of Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of the north of England. Just because thats not how it is said in the south of England dosent mean that its an Americanism. So many clueless people on here trying to tell others they are saying something wrong just because they aren't aware of regional differences in language.

Some of the replies on this are hilarious. She doesn’t mean small, saying a 1.5 carat diamond engagement ring is “cute” is 100% green-eyed-monster-speak, if you ask me!

Well if she doesn't mean small, then surely she does actually think it's cute?

In which case, how is that the 'green eyed monster'?

Jesus, some people are complicated.

gototogo · 01/03/2026 15:18

I.5 carats is big! (Mine 0.59 and not insubstantial) this woman obviously wanted to be rude

CorporealCarrot · 01/03/2026 15:18

If I said that it would mean "I'm not particularly interested in rings and don't really get bling, but it seems important to you so I'll make positive noises because you're my friend and I want you to be happy". But I don't have the kind of friendships where the women involved seem to basically hate each other and constantly be in competition with each other.

Elisirdamour · 01/03/2026 15:18

I’d be pissed off. “Cute” is not a flattering reaction to an engagement ring.

Jamesblonde2 · 01/03/2026 15:19

She’s probably used to seeing enormous lab grown diamonds which are way cheaper than real mined diamonds. They seem very common place now. It was a bank handed compliment.

SumUp · 01/03/2026 15:19

Engagementringquestion · 01/03/2026 14:24

Not at all, its just a pattern of her behaviour. I am so happy for my friends and cherise them. This was just another comment, of a fair amount over the years, where she thinks she is superior to others.

Without this context, “Cute” could be taken as a comment on your relationship with your partner - she is saying he’s cute for choosing that one.

But if she has form, which it sounds as though she has, she’s being a bitch.

Twinkylightsg · 01/03/2026 15:20

Only reason you take offence is because you know her. I would say its cute but my friends and people who know me in general know I'm not bitchy so would not take offence. But if I had a friend like that I wouldn't take offence as it just way she is, why would I expect anything different?

Okay, but how would you use the word 'cute'?

StephensLass1977 · 01/03/2026 15:22

It isn't her ring, and so I wouldn't give a toss about what she or anyone else thinks. I'm also not into diamonds or the size of the rock, etc. I just don't care.

We all have people like this in our lives. I had cousins like this so I stopped talking to them once we all became adults and had free will.

Yes she does sound bitchy but why on earth do people keep people like this in their lives? It's so peculiar to me.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 01/03/2026 15:23

Engagementringquestion · 01/03/2026 14:53

Nope not at all. I knew if I didn't state what the ring was that's the first thing posters would have asked.

Also it's actually a modest ring in terms of the absolute rocks you can get! My point was it doesn't look like something that came out of a christmas cracker for example.

It's modest compared to an 'absolute rock'? Maybe it just looks, well, cute, then? Same way you might look well rather than like shit on a stick?

LarryUnderwood · 01/03/2026 15:24

As an isolated thing I'd think she was being condescending and probably a bit jealous, but also not worth thinking much more of. But it would depend on history - if she was regularly making bitchy snidey comments I'd probably avoid her.

I think if she’s an American, it’s seems to be a turn of phrase more commonly used. Then maybe it was just a passing comment. Otherwise, she was being passive aggressive, I would assume.

PinkiePipe · 01/03/2026 15:25

Could be worse, my MIL just outright said "Oh. I thought it would be bigger". Didn't bother with any compliments, backhanded or not.

Overtheatlantic · 01/03/2026 15:26

It’s disingenuous to act like we don’t all know what she meant, despite the dreaded Americanisms. Referring to an engagement ring as cute is bitchy, no matter where you’re from.

Ferdyandthegingerone · 01/03/2026 15:27

Yes, she’s being a bitch, and she knows it. I’ve met a couple of women like that in my life. I avoid them, life is too short for such nonsense.

UpToonGirl · 01/03/2026 15:28

I think we need a picture of the ring in question!

Is she engaged/married - What's her jewellery like?

Marble10 · 01/03/2026 15:28

I wouldn’t look for validation from a friend for an engagement ring. It’s my ring - no one else’s. Who cares. Don’t know why you’ve let it get to you

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/03/2026 15:29

Engagementringquestion · 01/03/2026 14:40

Do you think its nice to call someone fat then?

It's a statement of fact. No good comes of pretending you can't see things you'd rather weren't happening. I write as someone who is overweight.

Bushmillsbabe · 01/03/2026 15:30

BatchCookBabe · 01/03/2026 14:22

She has said nothing wrong at all, and you sound like you WANT her to be jealous @Engagementringquestion Wink

I was thinking the same, it's very easy to make assumptions on how others are feeling and over analyse their behaviour.

Don't overthink it OP. Even if she had said 'I don't like it', does it matter? It doesn't sound she is someone whose opinion means a great deal to you, so why are you giving it any headspace? You should be on cloud nine, excited about your upcoming wedding, not focusing on a single word said by someone you don't seem to even like very much. We cannot control others actions, only our reactions.

Grammarninja · 01/03/2026 15:32

She deliberately used the word cute. It was designed to let you know she wasn't impressed. It's a nasty thing to do brought about by jealousy.
The only acceptable thing to say about someone's ring is that it is beautiful. A few oohs and ahhs should be thrown in too.

Jollyhockeystickss · 01/03/2026 15:32

If you get married for the rings and the dress and the day you will be one of the 43% who get divorced, why would your friend be jealous shes in a relationship, do you want to be with your man or wear a ring? I know no one agrees with me but the thought of wearing a ring to say oh look a man wants me! Want and love yourself,
