If someone called your engagement ring "cute"

Engagementringquestion · 01/03/2026 14:12

Would you think it was a bit bitchy? When showing a friend (who is known for giving backhanded compliments) she said "aww cute".

For reference my ring is a platinum 1.5 carat diamond solitaire and everyone else has said how stunning it is. So certainly not a cheap, small ring.

Would you be offended at this comment?

Americans say cute to mean pretty, nice, stylish etc. Maybe she picked it up from American media.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 01/03/2026 14:30

Americans call loads of things cute, which Brits wouldn’t necessarily.
Did she mean it like that, maybe?

Please don’t make this an American thing. This British woman was an absolute cow.

poetryandwine · 01/03/2026 14:39

If I didn’t like someone’s ring I wouldn’t lie. I would just exclaim happily (to a real friend) ‘Oh, you’re engaged, I’m so happy for you!’

All true.

Overtheatlantic · 01/03/2026 14:40

I would lie, especially if they were my friend.

Don’t forget “catty” in the latest post!

Do you think its nice to call someone fat then?

It's a bit mean isn't it? But clever because the word cute can still be used as a positive, so she knew I couldn't call her out on it. It seemed like she was trying to be patronising.

She isn't engaged but is in a long term relationship and wants to get married. I did wonder if she was a teeny bit jealous and this was her way of showing it.

my first thought was that she was jealous of the ring, but maybe it’s as much about the engagement itself. Time will tell if she down plays all your wedding plans.

WhereAllLightComesIn · 01/03/2026 14:41

It seems there are a few people on here who would get on well with your friend OP. 😬😅

ChilledProsecco · 01/03/2026 14:43

I’d love to see a picture!

And congratulations!!

TheTipsySquid · 01/03/2026 14:44

What would you have preferred her to say / what were you expecting her to say?

I think “cute” could be a compliment / pretty neutral / bitchy depending on the person

IckyIck · 01/03/2026 14:46

Why didn't you say it wasn't cute just not as flashy as hers?

MaryBeardsShoes · 01/03/2026 14:47

Which country are you in OP because here in the UK you have to be at least 16 to get married. (You’re behaving like children).

JLou08 · 01/03/2026 14:47

No, I would not be offended. When I say something is cute it means I like it.

Do you like it?

If so, that’s the only thing that matters, not what your friend thought or said.

MyLittleNest · 01/03/2026 14:48

My immediate thought was that she is jealous. Scrolling through your updates, I now see she is not engaged yet. There is your answer.

It was absolutely meant as a backhanded complimented. I used to have friends like this. I don't anymore. Life is too short.

user6386297154 · 01/03/2026 14:49

How old is she?or does she hang about with teens a lot? My DD and friends overuse cute, they mean it as a positive though.

As long as you love the ring though, who cares.

BareGrylls · 01/03/2026 14:36

Did she not say congratulations? I'm not sure what else needs saying, I didn't even realise people still had "engagement rings".
If someone showed me a ring I would have zero idea of it's value, should I be more gushing if it was expensive?

I think, going by the emphasis the OP has put upon the carats and metal used, it's expected by some that they fall over themselves to say 'OMG! That's a MASSIVE diamond! And PLATINUM! He really does love you more than any other boyfriend loves their girlfriend!'.

I wouldn't know. From googling pictures, they just look like a standard size sparkly thing in a ring. But I'd probably be hard put to be able to tell the difference between silver, white gold, platinum and titanium, never mind whether something a was natural diamond or a cubic zircona (which, as far I can see, is what engineered/lab diamonds used to be called).

TikTokker · 01/03/2026 14:51

Did she say you looked well too? She’s horrid

OneFootAfterTheOther · 01/03/2026 14:51

Someone once called my engagement ring cute - I did think she was being a cow.

tbf the ring is small - but that wasn’t any of her business.

StuffFreedom · 01/03/2026 14:53

Congratulations.

Now's the time to note that reaction and put her firmly on the 'no invite' list. Trust me, you don't want to be looking back in 20 years at her, centre stage in the wedding pictures.

Deflect with I didn't think we were that close or similar if you worry about being quizzed.

Nope not at all. I knew if I didn't state what the ring was that's the first thing posters would have asked.

Also it's actually a modest ring in terms of the absolute rocks you can get! My point was it doesn't look like something that came out of a christmas cracker for example.

Oh actually yes she has done a few times, another thing I've wondered about!

I enjoy her company and have grown up with her, so I guess I just accepted the comments over the years that haven't been palatable.

OP posts:
Nerocostapret · 01/03/2026 14:58

Are you going to ask her to be your bridesmaid?

Mcdhotchoc · 01/03/2026 14:58

Sounds like you are just looking for confirmation of what you already know, ie she is a mean girl.
