If someone called your engagement ring "cute"

Engagementringquestion · 01/03/2026 14:12

Would you think it was a bit bitchy? When showing a friend (who is known for giving backhanded compliments) she said "aww cute".

For reference my ring is a platinum 1.5 carat diamond solitaire and everyone else has said how stunning it is. So certainly not a cheap, small ring.

Would you be offended at this comment?

You say she is known for making backhanded compliments so in this case yes I would assume she was doing what she is known for doing.

With a normal person who actually liked me? Id take it at face value.

Engagementringquestion · 01/03/2026 14:21

Aww thank you that's very sweet of you.

Why can't women just celebrate each other, I don't understand it.

Surely the whole point of getting engaged is to announce that you’re getting married - not stealth brag about how big and expensive your engagement ring is?

CandiedPrincess · 01/03/2026 14:59

Who cares. You’re the one that needs to like it nobody else!

(also me and my DD use cute all the time)

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 01/03/2026 15:00

Honestly, why do you care? And why did you feel the need to assure us in your OP that your ring is actually a platinum 1.5 carat diamond solitaire that everyone else has said is stunning, just in case we might be left with any doubts? Why does it matter?

The size or value of your ring is not actually a reflection on the quality of your relationship. As long as you like the ring, it makes no difference what anyone else thinks of it. Maybe she was being a bitch or maybe she wasn't. Who cares. You don't have to seek validation from other people in any case.

It seems there are a few people on here who would get on well with your friend OP. 😬😅

💯 😂

It’s a backhanded compliment if ever there was one.

HotChocCreamAndMarshmallows · 01/03/2026 15:01

I’d think she was jealous in all honesty

Sunrae28 · 01/03/2026 15:02

Some people such as myself have no interest in jewelery, I would have no idea what carat of gold diamonds or platinum anything would be etc and it means nothing to me so maybe she thought she was complimenting

Please don’t make this an American thing. This British woman was an absolute cow.

Yes, but many Americanisms are popping up in British English. A lot of posters here write 'mom' instead of 'mum', or 'gotten' instead of 'got'. I was brought up with the word 'cute' meaning young, sweet, appealing, like a puppy or kitten. I was very surprised when I first heard a grown man described as 'cute'.

Engagementringquestion · 01/03/2026 14:40

Do you think its nice to call someone fat then?

Did she call her fat to her face, or did she say “X looks to have put weight on”? Because there’s a world of difference.

Rainydaycat · 01/03/2026 15:03

Passive aggressive jealousy

Again what? I've given a snippet of how the conversation went. She asked to see my ring, I showed her. Then she said the cute comment. Then my friends that I was with asked how it happened etc.

How have you come to that conclusion?

OP posts:
mrlistersgelfbride · 01/03/2026 15:05

How old are you both?

In my experience it’s a word that Gen Z use when something is nice or pretty.

holycrapballs · 01/03/2026 15:06

Given the context of backhanded compliments then I’d assume she was probably doing that. I’ve got a friend who does similar sometimes. We otherwise get on well but we’re not close friends.

I wouldn’t let it bother me but she definitely wanted to add a bit of shade. Calling something cute that is cute, fine and I do but this wasn’t it.

I think unless you know people like this, you won’t get it and won’t understand without the context.

Engagementringquestion · 01/03/2026 14:40

Well - are they? If it’s factually accurate and not said to the person themselves, I wouldn’t take offence about that on behalf of someone else

Nerocostapret · 01/03/2026 15:10

I thought the minimum age for getting married was 16?

dhomhnuill · 01/03/2026 15:10

You had me in agreement until you said "hardly a cheap small ring" so i voted YABU because that came across as you wanting accolates and yourself thinking some rings are better than others

Pollyanna87 · 01/03/2026 15:12

Someone once showed me their engagement ring, I said it was cute and immediately realised my mistake! I don’t think she thought anything of it, thankfully. I do use the word ‘cute’ a lot so I have to think carefully when seeing rings!

Dweetfidilove · 01/03/2026 15:12

Is it possible your friend has different taste to you and even though you're happy with your ring, it's less impressive to her?
Surely she's allowed that.

Cute is positive and certainly better than - 'not my bag' or 'it's a bit underwhelming '.

If you love your ring, that should really be all that matters.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/03/2026 15:12

I wouldn’t be offended at all.

transitvanwoes · 01/03/2026 15:14

God lord don't overthink this. If she has form for backhanded compliments, it probably is one. Would it offend me if someone didn't gush over my ring? Definitely not. A lot of them are fairly the same now, so if you've seen one you are hardly going to fall over in amazement. The comment I made about my SIL's ring apparently caused great offence without me even knowing. SIL (who I love dearly) is very slender and petite, with hands to match. I said the ring was "so fine", the band itself was very fine and matched her hand beautifully. According to consensus I meant the stone was small and the ring was cheap, neither of which entered into my head.

Nerocostapret · 01/03/2026 15:14

Can you let us know if you’re going to ask her to be your bridesmaid?!

transitvanwoes · 01/03/2026 15:15

Hopefully it's been logged with 101 and the offender is in custody.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 01/03/2026 15:16

Why are you worried? The ring is a symbol of love and commitment. It wouldn't matter if it was a CZ ring that cost a tenner off the market.

INX · 01/03/2026 15:16

Engagementringquestion · 01/03/2026 14:56

Oh actually yes she has done a few times, another thing I've wondered about!

I enjoy her company and have grown up with her, so I guess I just accepted the comments over the years that haven't been palatable.

Oh the horror!

Not only does she think your ring is cute, but she thinks you also look well when in fact you do actually look well.

Is there anything this woman can say that you won't take offence to?

Cappuccinowoah · 01/03/2026 15:16

Some of the replies on this are hilarious. She doesn’t mean small, saying a 1.5 carat diamond engagement ring is “cute” is 100% green-eyed-monster-speak, if you ask me!
