To think it’s ridiculous that an extra Bank Holiday has been announced in Scotland because they’ve qualified for the World Cup?

Just that really?

What if every country who qualifies decided to do this?

What about other sports?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/02/2026 15:59

Maybe the better question is, why doesn’t every country do this?

Theres an economic hit obviously but a little bit of joy goes a long way.

AgnesMcDoo · 15/02/2026 16:02

It only applies to government employees and others if their employer chooses to grant it.

Dancingsquirrels · 15/02/2026 16:04

Scotland in world cup is a big deal

But my local authority have announced they won't be giving the bank holiday

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 15/02/2026 16:04

I'm not Scottish and I'm not interested in football, but I'm very pleased that Scotland have qualified after so many years and I hope that they thoroughly enjoy supporting their team. If having an extra bank holiday enables them to do this, then I'm very pleased that they have got one.

We've had extra bank holidays in England in recent years because of the Queen's jubilee and the King's coronation. I'm not a royalist and couldn't have cared less about these events, but I know these things do matter to lots of people and I was perfectly happy to give my staff the extra days off.

You sound like a bit of a killjoy tbh OP.

thedevilinablackdress · 15/02/2026 16:20

No more spurious than bank holidays for jubilees and coronations

Great, England subsiding Scotland again.

Small minded nonsense

Well aren’t you a charmer…

halfshutknife · 16/02/2026 06:03

We shut the country down for a grown man in a gold cloak sitting on a chair that cost millions.
As a part-time employee I had to use my own annual leave to stay off, because it was pro rata and there was no option to work.
It’s all relative, what feels “silly” to one person is meaningful to someone else.

springchill · 16/02/2026 06:32

I’d like the extra day off but I don’t expect we will get it. Our place reluctantly closed for the queens funeral and I firmly believe that was only because everyone else was closed.

Dollymylove · 16/02/2026 06:39

Ninerainbows · 13/02/2026 16:29

Then they would have a day off work. So what? There will be no meteor strikes or giant sinkholes opening up.

Can you guarantee this wont happen? 🤣🤣

DeftGoldHedgehog · 16/02/2026 06:55

Butterflyfluff · 13/02/2026 16:31

I just don’t understand why a sporting celebration requires a Bank Holiday - they cost the economy, and in particular small employers, a fortune.

It’s fine saying only government employees get it but then private employers are the bad guys.

And why does this particular achievement deserve one more than other achievements?

We have about the lowest number of public holidays in the world.

We need at least two more in England. Three or four more would make us align with France and Germany.

Who both have much higher labour productivity than the UK.

If you're feeling jealous, you could always move there?

SaySomethingMan · 17/02/2026 15:31

Samewrinklesnewname · 15/02/2026 10:25

No, we had some (I think it was 4 but can’t swear to it) “local public holidays” (as opposed to bank holidays) converted to annual leave some years ago.
We get 1/2 January, Good Friday/Easter Monday, and 25/26 December
Emergency Service so 24/7 organisation so if you’re rostered to work a bank holiday the 9 times out of 10, you work it, ans d get the day back, which to be honest can be a good thing

Do you only have 25days leave like the average worker? I ask because everyone (most people ) i know who has worked in public sector for over 5 years has at least 30days so an extra week off.

slaintebab · 17/02/2026 15:43

YABU, can’t see the problem with people having a little bit more joy, we need it enough.

mibbelucieachwell · 17/02/2026 15:49

I’m confused about this . A holiday for public servants. Optional for everyone else?

AT least the Scottish government is consistent in its approach to Scottish football. They always pander to it. Remember Covid? people weren’t allowed to organise socially distanced outdoor running but football was allowed. There was a spike in cases , officially recognised by the PHA as being caused by football fans congregating when no one else was allowed to. Glasgow city centre on an old firm match day is literally a riot . People avoid the city centre. The truth is the day of or after big matches people call in sick to their work. But sure let’s all celebrate this while ignoring many other worthwhile sports and achievements.

LeedsLoiner · 17/02/2026 15:56

ScholesPanda · 13/02/2026 17:05

What would happen if every country did this?

The sky would fall in; the dead would rise from their graves to attack the living; and house prices would fall by 0.1%.

Lighten up, OP.

The Daily Mail would go mental if the house price fall happened, the rest they'd just blame on the wokes and forrins....

I take an additional week unpaid

I’m really surprised how many people

a) think my point is because I’m jealous because I won’t get it - I’m not

b) think bank holidays are a nice freebie that doesn’t impact anyone.

I agree the bank holidays for the Queen’s funeral etc were not necessary but at least they were a pretty unique event.

My whole point with this one is it’s an event that happens every 4 years and 48 countries have qualified - there’s nothing unique about it!

It IS unique to Scotland, because we haven't qualified for the world cup for so long. What's difficult to understand about that?

I have no idea why this is so confusing. The last time this happened I was in high school! Now my daughter is. It’s been a looong time (I don’t care at all but so many around me really, really do. And the tartan army are lovely so I’m excited for them)

Robbie82 · 18/02/2026 09:38

A - whether you are or aren't is irrelevant, what you are being is mean spirited.

B - they haven't qualified since the 90s, how unique do you want it?

Its a bit of a reward to allow people to fully enjoy what, in scotland, is a rare occassion. 1 extra day in more than a quarter of a century ? You're being pedantic.

Rollerbarbie88 · 16/03/2026 15:28

It's a more valid bank holiday than a royal wedding. At least Scots will actually engage with the cause of this one 😂

Firtreefiona · 16/03/2026 15:34

We won’t get it in our industry because we’re private sector workers and our company appreciates the need to act efficiently. A concept that passes the public sector by alas. It’s just like the push to a 4 day week (on 5 day a week pay obviously) trialled by the public sector not the private sector that funds it.

It’s funded by tax. Not private companies.
