To think it’s ridiculous that an extra Bank Holiday has been announced in Scotland because they’ve qualified for the World Cup?

Just that really?

What if every country who qualifies decided to do this?

What about other sports?

FFS - it’s fucking football!

Which is quite an important national game in many countries.
Yes, it has the good and bad, but bringing people together in celebration of an achievement is surely a good thing?

BashfulClam · 13/02/2026 20:41

Not many workplaces are doing it though. My husbands is and his English colleagues will be given an extra day to use when they want. We aren’t because we already get an extra day above our relish colleagues so because they’ll bitch about it we’ve been told no chance.

Butterflyfluff · 13/02/2026 20:48

The more you try to convince us that it's ridiculous, a joke or pathetic, the more out of touch you seem.

That’s really not the case.

The more you try and imply this is in any way important, the more out of touch you really are.

Every 4th country has qualified - it’s no big deal.

Awww, it's not just about hangovers! I've just found out the game is at 2am in the morning, UK time.

One of the reasons there's a bank holiday is so kids can stay up and feel part of this national occasion, and have the weekend to recover before school. That's lovely 🥰

OP you clearly don't understand a. How important this is to Scotland b. The sheer joy of being part of it.

This is nothing like England qualifying, as that happens all the time.

This is really special to so many people, and a load more are just enjoying being part of it - and why not?

Awa' an' bile yer heid, in other words!

Schools aren’t closing here (edinburgh) so I imagine they will just be very, very quiet. The games are all on crazy late - England has much better times.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 13/02/2026 21:13

Makes absolutely no difference to me what people in another country do. It's no more or less significant to me than some posh pensioner dying and her pensioner kid taking over the family business - or one of his kids getting hitched.

Many countries have more public holidays than England. They don't affect me either.

Personally, I'd quite enjoy a return to peasantry-style festivals, Saints' days and feasts. They certainly came around more often.

Oh no! What kind of bank holiday is it if the schools don't close!

Is that the same everywhere?

OhDear111 · 13/02/2026 17:17

Great idea. Stop the operations in hospitals. Why not give the police the day off whilst you are at it? It’s ridiculous. It’s interesting what counts as success in Scotland!

“Counts as success”!!

So getting day off for some fuckers wedding that we’ve had to pay millions for is a success is it?

JackJarvisEsq · 13/02/2026 21:24

I don’t know anyone who is getting the day off, myself included, and I work in a bank

Now that was a joke!!

Carolwithane · 13/02/2026 21:31

Bet you're an absolute hoot at parties!

Away n gies peace

FunnyOrca · 13/02/2026 21:32

It’s just a bit of fun!

The sun rises and sets every day (not that you would know in Scotland) no master what we do.

HoppityBun · 13/02/2026 21:38

I’m English and I have no interest in any sport. My response is: good for the Scots, and good luck to them. These things mean a lot and a day off is a day off.

TheGoddessAthena · 13/02/2026 17:58

Please don't worry about it. It means fuck all. It may just mean that some government workers take (another) day off.

A few years ago they announced that the 30th November (St Andrews Day) was also a "bank holiday" and despite that all the schools are open, banks are open, people go to work as usual.

Absolutely this! I was actually unaware for sometime that it was actually a public holiday - and when someone said it to me I had to check it as I thought they were mistaken.

DedododoDedadada · 13/02/2026 23:06

Course it's ridiculous but who cares it's a holiday so woohoo. Although in reality lots of people won't actually get it.

SALaw · 13/02/2026 23:07

What if they do? What’s wrong with that?

Samewrinklesnewname · 14/02/2026 13:07

I’m Scottish in Scotland and agree with the OP.
it’s a piece of nonsense, basically the lunatic SNP trying to buy votes in the Scottish election and unfortunately some idiots are that easily bought.
I work in the public sector and hope we don’t get it-public services are on their knees and can’t afford this

SaySomethingMan · 14/02/2026 13:09

Do you remember when we were promised a bank holiday should the men win the Euros (?). What do you think about that?

Im all up for an extra holiday tbh. I wish I lived in Scotland. The weather is the only thing that puts me off. It’s bad enough in England.

If you work for the public sector you also have a lot more holidays than the average worker, I take it?

I get 6 bank holidays a year like most people I know, public or private, and I “buy” an additional week’s annual leave every year-basically a week unpaid with the cost spread over the year.

Awrite · 14/02/2026 13:21

I hope you are only pretending to be this miserable. For your sake that is.

SugarPuffSandwiches · 14/02/2026 13:30

YANBU
(Only because I'm not in Scotland and want an extra bank holiday too)
Seriously though, why not? Who's it harming?

ChaToilLeam · 14/02/2026 13:31

Stop being such a misery! I don't even like football, but I'd rather the Scots got a holiday for that than some Royal nonsense.

It's a big deal to we Scots! I'm not even that big a follower of football and I'm chuffed that we've qualified! Surely you can see that qualifying for the first time in nearly 30 years is something to be celebrated? A bank holiday has been chosen as the way to celebrate. We wouldn't begrudge England an extra BH if they won!

Same, English and have no interest whatsoever, hate football but appreciate others like it and if it gives a bit of a morale boost/lift to people, that's a good thing to me. Can't get worked up about some people enjoying themselves even if it is watching others booting a football around the field and staying up late to do so then spending the next morning in bed hungover 😁

Six? Are you only working 17.5 hours?
