To think it’s ridiculous that an extra Bank Holiday has been announced in Scotland because they’ve qualified for the World Cup?

Just that really?

What if every country who qualifies decided to do this?

What about other sports?

Most people won’t actually get a holiday, not heard from my employer yet but I don’t expect we will get it.

hobbledyhoy · 13/02/2026 16:47

So what if people in Scotland get an extra bank holiday. It doesn’t affect you in any way either positively or negatively.

Do you always grudge someone getting a perceived ‘perk’ that you don’t?

Spangers · 13/02/2026 16:48

God forbid the plebs have a day off from the mill.

EnterQueene · 13/02/2026 16:49

I think it is typical SNP nonsense, pandering to the saltire painted faces lowest common denominator.

I hope the Scottish Government also provide additional investment for domestic abuse support. Alcohol fueled abuse of women increases significantly when Scotland lose - as they will.

It’s entirely predictable and expected. The SNP want to curry favour with the electorate.

That’s going to backfire if it transpires that only public sector workers ending up getting it.

They’ve already announced most in our city won’t have it. So it will be a nation of exhausted, hung over and cranky people plodding into work. With lots and lots of mysterious illness.

I don’t care about football one bit but the excitement from my kids’ friends and their families is lovely. We got a pointless bank holiday for some royalist thing so not sure why this is so terrible.

KimberleyClark · 13/02/2026 16:52

We didn't get one on Wales when we qualified! Mind you we don't even get one for St David's Day.

pavillion1 · 13/02/2026 16:53

Good for the Scots …. When did we al become so bitter

Not sure why you assume it doesn’t affect me. From a work point of view it actually does. And it has nothing to do with me not getting a day off!

Fun sponge

BaileysHotChocolateByThePool · 13/02/2026 16:54

They're excited and celebrating. Its not doing you any harm. I think its really nice.

whattheysay · 13/02/2026 16:56

What difference would it make to you what a country you don’t live in does?

PurpleCoo · 13/02/2026 16:56

I don't begrudge the Scots an extra day off, but it is the most ludicrous reason I have ever heard of for a Bank Holiday.

I also object to football or other sporting events being declared as 'breaking news' or a 'news flash'. A group of men (or women for that matter) running around a pitch with a ball is not really 'breaking news'.

Funnily enough, I was saying exactly the same to Richard Tice the other day ....

CactusSwoonedEnding · 13/02/2026 16:24

How does it hurt you?
Government employees will have a free day off except if they are frontline staff in a service that has to run every day no matter what. There is no legal compulsion for other employers to do the same (though they may).
It wouldn't be a problem if every coutry who qualifies decides to do this. It's all fine. You don't need everyone to be miserable in order to feel that all is right with the world.

Presumably a day when all elective surgery is cancelled. That will hurt thousands of people.

Mysterian · 13/02/2026 16:58

Chill. It's only going to be once every 40 years or so.

tigger1001 · 13/02/2026 17:02

I'm Scottish. Most won't get the holiday. Several councils have already said they aren't closing etc. it will be like St Andrews day - a public holiday in name only

im a football fan and will be watching, but I agree with you. It is silly. And most employers will carry on as normal.

its almost like it's an election year....

MoiraPlunkett · 13/02/2026 17:05

I don't care about this one but I wish we get Jan 2nd in England like the Scots! Grin.

that is, unfortunately, a good point.

ScholesPanda · 13/02/2026 17:05

What would happen if every country did this?

The sky would fall in; the dead would rise from their graves to attack the living; and house prices would fall by 0.1%.

Lighten up, OP.

DeepBlueDeer · 13/02/2026 17:08

Better than having one for a royal wedding.

Anything that brings communities together has got to be good especially these days.

AnotherCuppaWillDo · 13/02/2026 17:11

No more ridiculous than getting a bank holiday when the Queen died or when Will & Kate got married. Good luck to the Scots! It means a lot to so many of them
