To think it’s ridiculous that an extra Bank Holiday has been announced in Scotland because they’ve qualified for the World Cup?

Just that really?

What if every country who qualifies decided to do this?

What about other sports?

I agree with this entirely -and I’m public sector and glad we’re not getting it.

It was yet another pre-election usual SNP headliner to buy votes and if you can’t see that then I despair.
Scotgov basically granted themselves a free day off-it’s utterly embarrassing

Plus my two sons are getting it off and neither of them work for Scotgov.

six666 · 11/06/2026 13:07

Yes, I live in Scotland and I agree it is utterly ridiculous!
Not everyone up here is totally obsessed with football despite what the SNP might think!

The British Geological Survey (BGS) recorded the equivalent to an "extremely small earthquake" after Kenny McLean lobbed Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel to secure a 4-2 win

A second significant amount of seismic activity came moments later when the final whistle sounded on Wednesday night

The match against Denmark was spectacular

Scotland getting to the World Cup is huge for Scotland. Facebook is airports posting photos of supporters

I'd love it to be a national bank holiday. Sadly, I don't think we can afford it (and most people don't seem to be getting it)

Dozens of Scotland fans celebrating at the final whistle at Hampden. They have scarves and banners.

Scotland fans shook the earth in win over Denmark

Seismic activity was recorded as the Tartan Army celebrated Scotland reaching their first World Cup since 1998.

FFS - it’s fucking football!

See that is your problem right there . You will never understand the passion Scotland fans have . It's rare that they qualify so naturally want to celebrate.

As to imposing on you , maybe business wise , I think it's a case of tough titty or rather taite.

I have zero interest in football which makes it difficult as my whole immediate and extended family and friends all love it.

But I love the Tartan Army.

Just love them!

"Oh it's a big deal for Scotland let me assure you! You aren't Scottish and you don't live here, so you will have no clue how big a deal this is."
I am Scottish. have lived in Scotland all my life, the world cup is not a big deal for everyone. I couldn't care less about football!

I can't honestly say that I do ..but I respect their right to do what they want, I certainly don't wish them any ill will...

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 11/06/2026 13:45

I don’t see how it harms you OP, or anyone in England, Wales and NI if Scotland have a bank holiday.

Shame we didn’t have one when the Lionesses won the Euros though.

UniBrowsAreHot · 11/06/2026 14:06

Are we this bored that we have to find reasons for faux concern or outrage? I have baseboards that need cleaning if you're at a loss for entertainment.

I can absolutely guarantee you that more people in Scotland are interested in the football than gave a shit about the Queen dying or the King getting a new hat.

Not much of a guarantee....
That's just your opinion unless you have the actual figures to back that claim up!

Scotland vs Denmark last November, a Qualifier and not even a Finals match, drew 2.9million viewers across the 90 minutes and hit a peak of 4million during injury time.

2.5million people in Scotland watched "some part" of QEII's funeral according to the BBC.

So there you have it. A UK Monarch can pull a stunt like dying, and even still more people would rather watch a UEFA Men's Qualifier.

It's not as simple as that!
Those events did not take place at the same time so the viewing figures are not mutually exclusive. Also there would have been a considerable number of people in Scotland who watched neither of these events but whose opinions must count for something.
Unless you ask everyone in Scotland individually you can't really know what they all think.....

Outnumbered1983 · 12/06/2026 07:18

its not a blanket bank holiday in Scotland, John Swinny made it down to each local authority to decide. My local authority chose not to take the public holiday however our neighbouring local authority is taking it. We are working as usual, schools are open as usual but Our local GP surgery is closed as they are taking the holiday as is the local bank whose head office is based in England.

Then why did you imply it absolutely is as "simple as that" by demanding figures for comparison?

You asked for actual figures to back the claim up. I've provided the actual figures.

The claim was that more people in Scotland are interested in football that dead Royals or Coronations. The figures you demanded back that claim.

The only relevant barometer we have is how many people watched coverage of these events, but because it counters your view you are now claiming it's impossible to tell without personally polling every single individual, which is not only nonsense but is an obvious example of moving the goalposts simply because the answers you demanded imply something you don't like. Playground stuff.

What bank is it.. I work for a bank with a lot of Scottish employees and they are not giving them the bank holiday. Apparently Tesco are

No need to get all upset about it. I still don"t think you have proved anything but will bow out now as sometimes it"s just best to agree to differ. Enjoy the football!
