To think it’s ridiculous that an extra Bank Holiday has been announced in Scotland because they’ve qualified for the World Cup?

Just that really?

What if every country who qualifies decided to do this?

What about other sports?

It’s a big thing for football fans in Scotland, qualifying for us is akin to winning for a lot of other nations!

Most people won’t get it anyway. I work for an English company and we get English holidays we we won’t get it.

Six? Are you only working 17.5 hours?

No, we had some (I think it was 4 but can’t swear to it) “local public holidays” (as opposed to bank holidays) converted to annual leave some years ago.
We get 1/2 January, Good Friday/Easter Monday, and 25/26 December
Emergency Service so 24/7 organisation so if you’re rostered to work a bank holiday the 9 times out of 10, you work it, ans d get the day back, which to be honest can be a good thing

Are you happy with that? We had two converted. Both Fridays in May and September.

So we get 10 plus the 2 extra AL.

Sorry missed your edit. Back in the day if you worked a public holiday you got double time and a day in lieu!

Samewrinklesnewname · 15/02/2026 10:36

@Differentforgirls not at all! As a shift worker it meant that we lost out on potentially 4 days extra pay a year-double time on public holidays, but shift workers are in the minority in the organisation so it was a decision made for the benefit of the Monday-Friday workers.
Our shift pattern is pretty much set in stone, so it’s not a case of being rostered on bank holidays at a manger’s whim-your shifts are your shifts.

I’d be the same as you.

alpenguin · 15/02/2026 10:50

So what?
Scotland doesn’t get the August bank holiday yet we have to suffer the knock on effects of England shutting down for the day, the radio programmes all changing from regular to prerecorded guff and constantly going on about it on tv for the weekend.

This bank holiday won’t affect many people. It’s tokenistic but it’s kind of nice to have an even in theory national bank holiday for something that happens very rarely. It’s a recognition of the event

How about just letting people have a bit of joy out of something.

ColinOfficeTrolley · 15/02/2026 14:41

Bet you're a joy at parties OP. Jesus h Christ. What effect does it have on your life at all!!!!

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 15/02/2026 14:42

Scotland qualifying for the world cup is a huge deal. Why shouldn't they have a bank holiday?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 15/02/2026 14:49

Samewrinklesnewname · 14/02/2026 13:07

I’m Scottish in Scotland and agree with the OP.
it’s a piece of nonsense, basically the lunatic SNP trying to buy votes in the Scottish election and unfortunately some idiots are that easily bought.
I work in the public sector and hope we don’t get it-public services are on their knees and can’t afford this

Fortunately for miserable torn-faced unionists, there is an election in May, so plenty of time for Anas Sarwar/Findlay/whoever is in charge of the LibDems these days to sweep to power, cancel the BH, and let Scots yoons bask in the misery they seem to relish.

Bloody nationalists, doing things Scots might like eh? How dare they. Someone might smile or something.

After England win the World Cup, Starmer's successor will have to give England and Wales a bank holiday.

beencaughttrollin · 15/02/2026 15:32

Tony Blair used to declare Bank Holidays UK-wide when England qualified for various sporty things. Scotland having a holiday because Scotland qualified seems more logical and moderate to me.

Duvetdayneeded · 15/02/2026 15:40

Great, England subsiding Scotland again.

Alliod40 · 15/02/2026 15:41

Ireland got one because we behaved through covid..we are only delighted with it

Bluedenimdoglover · 15/02/2026 15:44

Oh well, you can't please everyone .... Good luck Scotland!

Ponoka7 · 15/02/2026 15:48

SALaw · 13/02/2026 23:07

What if they do? What’s wrong with that?

The bank holiday when Queen Elizabeth died set my granddaughter's hearing aids back by a year. That's a year in school not being able to hear and at a age were her speech would be affected. This was after no speech therapy or hearing aids, during lock down.
If we had a health system like in the 2000's were an appointment was available that week, all well and good, but it sets people back months, to years. Surgeons/Consultants etc work all over the UK, so does it affect anyone who has health issues.

I’d have slightly less of an issue of the nhs in Scotland wasn’t so broken that people re waiting 2+yers for cataract operations, 2yers for hip replacements and women and babies weren’t being put at risk because maternity units are so under resourced that pregnancies are routinely going into their 43rd week due to there not being enough to to carry out inductions inna safer timescale.

But you crack on with your delusion

When Tony Blair was in power my DD attended a SN clinic in Alderhey. They'd tell you what appointments were available and if not suitable, you'd have more to choose from that week. Now it's 'go home, wait for the letter, then cancel and wait for the next one'. The same DD (now 29) is waiting for Endocrinology, since she couldn't make an appointment in April 2024. She's getting a phone call appointment in March. We are living in very different times.

Ukefluke · 15/02/2026 15:53

How does it affect your life?

Ukefluke · 15/02/2026 15:55

Butterflyfluff · 13/02/2026 17:27

I’m surprised that so many people think adding a random Bank Holiday in, at fairly short notice, for an extremely spurious reason, doesn’t affect anyone not living in that country.

It’s an absolute minefield for employers of any business with operations in Scotland, for a multitude of reasons. Not least deciding if you are going to honour the date or not.

Well they did it for whatever the tedious royal jubilee was....... Or was it the naff coronation?
Who cares . Its a day off.

RaraRachael · 15/02/2026 15:57

Completely ridiculous.

My OH won't be getting the day off anyway.
