To think it’s ridiculous that an extra Bank Holiday has been announced in Scotland because they’ve qualified for the World Cup?

Just that really?

What if every country who qualifies decided to do this?

What about other sports?

It’s funded by tax. Not private companies.

Who do you think the government raises tax from?

People like me who worked in the public sector.

Who’s pay comes from central government funds, which comes from taxes raised on people outwith the public sector. There is no country on earth that is able to survive without private enterprise funding it.

You would never get a job in the public sector due to this.

chocolatemademefat · 16/03/2026 15:59

Shocking eh? I’m Scottish and have no interest in football but I’ll enjoy the holiday - especially now I know it annoys you! If this is all you have to annoy you I pity you.

Your comprehension is appalling, as is your attempt to shame someone for using ‘Who’s’ Instead of ‘whose’?.

Thank you. Appreciate the post from someone who obviously works in the “private” sector.

I don't think it matters employers don't have to honour Bank Holidays - mine doesn't . Many small employers won't lots of industries won't so it makes v little different.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 16/03/2026 16:39

It's bonkers. I'd have preferred a bank holiday when Andy Murray reached the Wimbledon final. Football is way over regarded in Scotland. We are shite at it. We are much better in other sports but they get little recognition. Some councils are refusing to grant the holiday.

NemesisInferior · 16/03/2026 17:03

I can absolutely guarantee you that more people in Scotland are interested in the football than gave a shit about the Queen dying or the King getting a new hat.

it may be news but public sector workers pay tax too…isn’t the public sector the biggest employer in Scotland? Happy to be corrected if this isn’t the case though

!!! Who funds the tax!??

Outnumbered1983 · 18/03/2026 16:28

It’s down to each individual local authority to choose whether they go or the public holiday or not. I work for a local authority that has chosen not to take it as a public holiday, so it’s a working day as normal. Whilst I would have loved an additional day off work, as a tax payer I agree that it shouldn’t take place due to the state of the authorities finances and the fact they have increased council tax whilst cutting services - it would have been irresponsible.

Public service workers.

I don't think you know how taxation works.

OonaStubbs · 18/03/2026 19:32

Public sector workers do not contribute tax unless they earn more than they pay in tax. This extra bank holiday is an absolute disgrace.

I doubt there are many employees, Public Sector or otherwise, who pay more in tax than their total salaries.

HollaHolla · 18/03/2026 22:25

Most places aren't getting it though.... (Maybe the banks are, but not in education, healthcare, etc.)

Haggis0381 · 10/06/2026 10:11

The laugh of it is, that only government workers and NHS staff are getting the day off up here, and some local councils have opted out of it altogether, so staff are working as usual. I think it's ridiculous to give a country the day off for football, personally. Some pubs in Edinburgh will stay open until 4.30am(!) which will make Saturday night horribly rowdy and trains a nightmare, even more filled with idiotic drunk people than normal. Not to mention the stragglers making their way home on Sunday morning.

Haggis0381 · 10/06/2026 10:14

Emori · 13/02/2026 16:27

Better than them all turning up to work hungover or pished, especially the train drivers/bus drivers/nuclear submarine inspectors etc.

The match is at 2am Sunday. If people are turning up to work pissed on Monday, they have real problems.

itsallgoodfunreally · 10/06/2026 10:27

Am just gutted not to be Scottish 🤣, though hope they recognize the Women's qualification in the same way!!

Don't agree with this at all.

Edinburgh pubs and clubs are routinely open until 5am during the Festival. They used to open until that time year-round pre the relaxation of licensing laws, which ironically led to reduced opening hours at the insistence of the Police because they did not want pubs and clubs both emptying at the same point. It also used to be common for pubs to open at 5am, some still do open at 6am, and yet despite the reduction in hours the town is rowdier now than it ever was back in the 90s, and folk are perfectly capable of behaving themselves in August despite being able to drink 24/7

Most pubs staying open later than their usual hours are running ticketed events with curfews on entry, so people are not going to be out on the streets being rowdy, they'll be in the pub watching football.

Most people are perfectly capable of behaving responsibly, even when alcohol is being served into the wee hours.

I suspect lots of pubs everywhere are open until 4 this weekend. I live in a wee town and am going out to watch the game in the local pub.

hospitality industry is really struggling - I dont blame them for wanting to make some money.

People that work for the UK government in Scotland aren't getting it. Only those that work for the Scottish government.
