To think it’s ridiculous that an extra Bank Holiday has been announced in Scotland because they’ve qualified for the World Cup?

Just that really?

What if every country who qualifies decided to do this?

What about other sports?

Well, I think Scotland are taking their qualification very seriously and want to celebrate more than countries that are more used to qualifying.

EvelynBeatrice · 13/02/2026 16:22

It’s entirely predictable and expected. The SNP want to curry favour with the electorate.

pixieee · 13/02/2026 16:24

I am happy for an extra bank holiday for any reason what so ever. Unfortunately I don't live in Scotland.

Carryitjoyfully · 13/02/2026 16:24

My user name is appropriate here. We will not win. We are unlikely to progress at all. Let us just enjoy a moment of national unity!

CactusSwoonedEnding · 13/02/2026 16:24

How does it hurt you?
Government employees will have a free day off except if they are frontline staff in a service that has to run every day no matter what. There is no legal compulsion for other employers to do the same (though they may).
It wouldn't be a problem if every coutry who qualifies decides to do this. It's all fine. You don't need everyone to be miserable in order to feel that all is right with the world.

Hodgemollar · 13/02/2026 16:24

”What if every country who qualifies decided to do this?“
So what?

SerendipityJane · 13/02/2026 16:25

Sovereign nation uses sovereignty shocker.

Weather to follow.

BollyMolly · 13/02/2026 16:25

What if every country who qualifies decided to do this?

So what if they did? What terrible thing do you think would happen?

DelphiniumBlue · 13/02/2026 16:26

I think a national celebration is usually a good thing, morale-boosting etc. What have you got against it, OP?

Emori · 13/02/2026 16:27

Better than them all turning up to work hungover or pished, especially the train drivers/bus drivers/nuclear submarine inspectors etc.

I think this is just this and think it's great to have a moment of national unity. I do wish we'd had some bank holidays in England for our women's teams' successes.

DestinedToBeOutlived · 13/02/2026 16:27

Alright Ebeneezer, do you want to make everyone work on Christmas day too?

mumofoneAloneandwell · 13/02/2026 16:28

Yabvu!

haste ye backs, Scotts, hope you do well 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I’m a fan of your men🤭

It would be the end of civilization, you big silly.

Then they would have a day off work. So what? There will be no meteor strikes or giant sinkholes opening up.

Butterflyfluff · 13/02/2026 16:31

I just don’t understand why a sporting celebration requires a Bank Holiday - they cost the economy, and in particular small employers, a fortune.

It’s fine saying only government employees get it but then private employers are the bad guys.

And why does this particular achievement deserve one more than other achievements?

Blueunicornthistle · 13/02/2026 16:34

Bank holidays are a devolved power. The First Minister asked the Monarch to proclaim a BH but it’s not like a standard bank holiday.

I work for a bank, in Scotland. So far we aren't getting the day off.

There’s no obligation for employers to give the day. Several councils have said they won’t be giving it.

I’m not a fan of football myself but it can’t be compared to other sports, it has a far broader following.

As for other countries, if they would like to celebrate being in the World Cup why shouldn’t they.

In summary - why do you care?

It's a nation deciding what a nation wants to do. It's how the UK works.

Why do you hate Britain ?

Fodencat · 13/02/2026 16:37

Football is great. The World Cup is the greatest show on earth. We should all be having the whole tournament off

justtheotheronemrswembley · 13/02/2026 16:39

Good luck to them, I hope they do well in their sporting endeavours.

Do I care that they have been given an extra bank holiday? Not one jot.

Whatadayyyyyyy · 13/02/2026 16:40

I take it you are not Scottish

I don’t know why but “you big silly” has properly tickled me, so thank you for cheering up my afternoon 😂
