To think it’s ridiculous that an extra Bank Holiday has been announced in Scotland because they’ve qualified for the World Cup?

Just that really?

What if every country who qualifies decided to do this?

What about other sports?

I just don’t understand why a sporting celebration requires a Bank Holiday - they cost the economy, and in particular small employers, a fortune.

It’s fine saying only government employees get it but then private employers are the bad guys.

And why does this particular achievement deserve one more than other achievements?

Edited

Do they cost the economy? I worked in hospitality when I was younger and I live near a seaside town. People spend a lot over a bank holiday weekend.

Royal related bank holidays are the worst because everything's closed and there's fuck all on telly. They're like Sundays in the 1970s.

I don't care about this one but I wish we get Jan 2nd in England like the Scots! Grin.

Won't lie - I love that bank holiday! Am lucky enough we close for the Christmas break and it's great knowing not back until 3rd jan (or closest working day to it)

we actually don't close any other public holidays but would really miss that one lol

igelkott2026 · 13/02/2026 17:14

Bank holidays are a nuisance. I want to take holiday when I want to, not when the government says I should.

And no doubt there will be people who already had NHS appointments for that day that will now be cancelled. This sort of short term bank holidaying needs to stop.

Yes the one for the Queen's funeral was awful. It was very much "you WILL watch the funeral, peasant". I hope we don't have the same when Charles dies. Funeral on a weekend please!

PandoraSocks · 13/02/2026 17:15

@Butterflyfluff do you live in Scotland?

Emori · 13/02/2026 17:15

Yeah fuck bank holidays. I want to celebrate Christmas alone, in February.

I think it is typical SNP nonsense, pandering to the saltire painted faces lowest common denominator.

I hope the Scottish Government also provide additional investment for domestic abuse support. Alcohol fueled abuse of women increases significantly when Scotland lose - as they will.

As if. We already know that the SNP doesn't give a stuff about women.

PandoraSocks · 13/02/2026 17:16

And here we go...

OhDear111 · 13/02/2026 17:17

Great idea. Stop the operations in hospitals. Why not give the police the day off whilst you are at it? It’s ridiculous. It’s interesting what counts as success in Scotland!

Harrietsaunt · 13/02/2026 17:17

So what? We have very few compared to other countries.

The more the better!

We didn't get one on Wales when we qualified! Mind you we don't even get one for St David's Day.

Don't get me started on Dydd Gwyl Dewi Sant - every single UK Prime Minister since 1999 has been asked by Welsh Government for 1 March as a Bank Holiday, which is always then passed on to the Welsh Secretary of the day (we won't talk about how many of them could barely point out Wales on a map or 'went there once on holiday as a child') and we are always told no. Even when we offer to give up the early May BH as a trade off. Devolved in Scotland, absolutely not devolved in Wales. I reckon Plaid will make it happen if they get in after 7 May... Anyway - Scotland, enjoy your bank holiday, I hope that many of you get to take it as a day to celebrate your culture. Lang may yer lum' reek!

If that was aimed at my comment, well it's true isn't it?

But it's not just in Scotland that women get abused when the male football team loses, men in England are more than capable of coming home pissed and beating up their wives too (also when they win).

It worked out well for me as I'd already booked that week off for a September holiday so I got a day back! We were driving on the Monday and the roads were really quiet so obviously lots of 'peasants' were indeed watching 😆

So you think this is what happens for every bank holiday do you? Operations stop? The police stop policing? That is in no way the real world.

I don't get this attitude. Why do you want to be forced to take holiday when the government says you must?

I'd be quite happy to get rid of the two May and the August bank holidays in England and add them to the compulsory annual leave allowance so you can take it when you want to, within reason (I know some employers are less flexible than others).

BlackCat14 · 13/02/2026 17:21

Struggling to see the issue, really.

When the Queen died and they had the Bank Holiday I went out with some friends to a pub in the centre of Cardiff. I asked at the bar if they were going to show the funeral - because I wanted to avoid it - and the guy behind the bar said: "Nope, we're putting a documentary on about Owain Glyndwr on the tellies." My kind of people.

Some years ago I worked in a team where everyone was Scottish apart from two of us. Jan 2nd was pretty grim for the two of us in England as we got the deluge of post Christmas work😫

They do when the bank holiday is decided at short notice. Operations will have already been scheduled and they'll have to be cancelled.

It's not like the bank holidays that happen every year that are scheduled around from the outset.

The police won't stop working but most of the NHS will.

I know that happens. But what does that have to do with having a bank holiday? The abusers will abuse whether there is a BH or not.

No more ridiculous than getting a bank holiday when the Queen died or when Will & Kate got married. Good luck to the Scots! It means a lot to so many of them

Exactly what i was going to say. When I lived in England I happily took the day off for some queen celebration. She might have turned 70, or been queen for 70 years or something. As a proud Republican Irishwoman, I have no interest in celebrating the queen or her family, but enjoyed the day off nonetheless.

Butterflyfluff · 13/02/2026 16:49

That’s going to backfire if it transpires that only public sector workers ending up getting it.

Backfire in what way?

Do you really think someone who was planning to vote SNP in the May elections will suddenly decide not to because other people are getting some time off a month later?

Various NHS Scotland or Councils bodies already take public holidays (e.g September weekend or Fair weekend) that most people don’t get. The sky does not fall in.

MrsBelindaMay · 13/02/2026 17:26

We had an extra bank holiday for the royal wedding. I wonder which event might be more unique and less frequent
