To think it’s ridiculous that an extra Bank Holiday has been announced in Scotland because they’ve qualified for the World Cup?

Just that really?

What if every country who qualifies decided to do this?

What about other sports?

As a scot who has no interest in football its a great idea. It encourages national celebration and quite honestly the SNP would realise half of Scotland wont turn up to work the next day or will be hungover so are one step ahead. Scottish people love to party and this will be a huge party.

tigger1001 · 13/02/2026 17:54

If you aren't living in Scotland then it has no impact on you. Several councils have already said they won't be closing etc it's really not going to be anything other than like St Andrews day.

its just a publicity stunt in an election year

TheGoddessAthena · 13/02/2026 17:58

Please don't worry about it. It means fuck all. It may just mean that some government workers take (another) day off.

A few years ago they announced that the 30th November (St Andrews Day) was also a "bank holiday" and despite that all the schools are open, banks are open, people go to work as usual.

tuvamoodyson · 13/02/2026 17:58

Butterflyfluff · 13/02/2026 16:49

That’s going to backfire if it transpires that only public sector workers ending up getting it.

Blueunicornthistle · 13/02/2026 17:24

Backfire in what way?

Do you really think someone who was planning to vote SNP in the May elections will suddenly decide not to because other people are getting some time off a month later?

Various NHS Scotland or Councils bodies already take public holidays (e.g September weekend or Fair weekend) that most people don’t get. The sky does not fall in.

People on here are so blinded by haterd towards the SNP they lose sight of logic.

Oh my days! What kind of paranoia is that!

it’s not the country that is the issue - it’s the principle of doing something with such far reaching implications for such a spurious reason.

Would you be angry if france had a sudden holiday? If Ireland did?

JustPlainStanfreyPock · 13/02/2026 18:11

It's not being paid for - probably only Scotgov civil servants will get it, just like the St Andrew's Day wheeze.

Cash strapped councils and businesses can't afford to pay their staff for an extra bank holiday, so most folk won't get it.

Oh the drama! It is one day. I am sure Scotland will cope.

Armageddon is cancelled!

I wouldn't be so sure. Didn't they already cause an earthquake when they qualified? Underestimate the Scots at your peril.

Rosieliz04 · 13/02/2026 18:27

How miserable to begrudge other people small joys such as this!
Let people enjoy their time on earth for Christ’s sake.
Who cares about the reason, sounds lovely.

Nicelynicelyjohnson · 13/02/2026 18:29

It would annoy me purely because I am self employed so gain nothing from it.
And the World Cup is in the US, which I am trying to boycott.

But I do get how much it means to so many people, so it gets my grudging "approval".

JHound · 13/02/2026 18:33

No less ridiculous than having one for a royal wedding.

Bank holidays are ALWAYS a good thing! If other countries decided to do likewise.....so?

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 13/02/2026 18:38

Awa a bile yer heid!

We’re proud and we love an excuse for a shindig.

littleorangefox · 13/02/2026 19:00

Aw ffs we won't get past the first round anyway so let us have a tiny bit of excitement eh 😂

Also, maybe we will all need an extra day off to do something to help us avoid the (kind of embarrassing) perpetual stream of "It's coming home" shite that will inevitably be repeated endlessly by certain supporters of another team...

SerendipityJane · 13/02/2026 19:00

Did anyone ever read "Jennings" when young ? The lads a t Lindbury Court were always being awarded half days by visiting dignitaries and the headmaster nearly always never got round to actually grating them.

ImPamDoove · 13/02/2026 19:03

I can see no negatives to this. I’m a republican who appreciates days off for royal weddings and funerals. Don’t have even a passing interest in football (I’m assuming this is football related, not rugby), but I’d be happy with a day off.

MasterBeth · 13/02/2026 19:03

What if every country who qualifies decided to do this?

Fun times all round. Bring it on!

ColdAsAWitches · 13/02/2026 19:15

It's a better reason for a bank holiday than to celebrate a man killing a mythical animal who never actually visited the country that celebrates him.

Do you have any idea how huge this is in Scotland?!

They haven't qualified for the world cup since 1998. For a huge number of the population, this will be the first time they have ever got to see Scotland be in the tournament.

Most years they have to endure the national telly going on and on about the world cup as if England is the only country in the UK that matters.

This year, Scotland being in the world cup is immense!!

Even if they lose every game, pretty much the whole country will be behind them. And if they win! Well the government are wise with the bank holiday idea is all I can say 😁

FFS - it’s fucking football!

Scotland in the World Cup - it's a once in a generation thing, unlike England, who always qualify. So It's fair enough that they get a bank holiday and we don't.

Butterflyfluff · 13/02/2026 19:28

VividPinkTraybake · 13/02/2026 18:07

Would you be angry if france had a sudden holiday? If Ireland did?

I’m not angry - I just think it’s pretty pathetic.

And I would no matter which country did it.

If they actually won then there’s a slightly better argument but just for qualifying as 1 out of 48 countries, (which is literally a fourth of all the countries in the world) is a bit of a joke.

falalalalalalalallama · 13/02/2026 20:36

Awww, it's not just about hangovers! I've just found out the game is at 2am in the morning, UK time.

One of the reasons there's a bank holiday is so kids can stay up and feel part of this national occasion, and have the weekend to recover before school. That's lovely 🥰

OP you clearly don't understand a. How important this is to Scotland b. The sheer joy of being part of it.

This is nothing like England qualifying, as that happens all the time.

This is really special to so many people, and a load more are just enjoying being part of it - and why not?

The more you try to convince us that it's ridiculous, a joke or pathetic, the more out of touch you seem.

Awa' an' bile yer heid, in other words!
