Was anyone a fan but now is a bit....done?

I was, of her music, didn't really follow her much (her personal life)

But after her shitty album, the texts made public in the BL/JB controversy and now the Opalite video yet AGAIN making digs at her fiances ex, who is now getting bullied online...I just think I see her for who she is and I can't separate the music from the artist

I think I may be a retired 'swiftie'

She's nearing 40 for god's sake....it's all very mean girl

It's fucking exhausting. And now I realise how I must have used to sound and quite frankly it's embarrassing

I did want to chat about the things I am finding disappointing yes. I don't really want loads of people to come on her and slag her off.... what would I get out of that? I do not hate her. I WAS a big fan. I'm finding it hard to be. Discussing this with fucking nutter swifties (which I can see now maybe I was!!!) is just mind blowing. I dare the both of you to name one thing she has ever done that you didn't quite like or thought was a bit off? Go on, let it out!

Completely agree. I enjoyed her very early music but she became formulaic incredibly fast. And for a woman who is no longer 16 she leans into a faux naivety and victim hood too much.

I just think I see her for who she is and I can't separate the music from the artist- You've presumably never even met her so I seriously doubt that.

I haven't seen any of them, maybe my algorithm knows I'm not interested in boring people coming here to announce who they don't listen to- the only ones I ever see are about Taylor Swift. I could list probably hundreds of bands and singers that I'm not a huge fan of and don't listen to in my spare time, but I'm not so narcissistic as to think anyone cares. If you want to listen to Pink Floyd/ Nikki Minaj/ Yes!/ Queen (and that's just a small handful off the top of my head) or many other performers who are not to my taste then I have no wish to try to change your mind on that and you are entitled to like what you like. But for some reason, anyone who is a fan of Taylor Swift sees a laundry list of all the reasons someone else doesn't like Taylor Swift every day. You don't have to justify it, no-one is trying to make you listen to her.

I struggle a bit with this. A UK curly hair content creator I follow posted something anti Trump recently and got a barrage of rude messages and unfollows. If someone that far removed has to deal with pro Trump nut cases can you imagine if Taylor Swift were to speak out. I think her life wouldn't be the same.

Also I have no idea what this is but that's a horrendous and ill-informed attitude about breastfeeding from some Mumsnetter I've never heard of. Taylor Swift hasn't had a baby or ever breastfed or even expressed a view on breastfeeding as far as I know so why is it relevant?

I'm a huge TS fan and have been since Red. Have loved all her albums. I like the popiness of YLOASG but find the constant references to how fab Travis is etc a bit too much. Wood in particular I can't listen to. It's OK though, I just listen to the rest of her stuff on shuffle 😁

Sexually harassed Blake on set. They fell out spectacularly about the script as well. The two sides are - he says he didn't do anything and she was a nightmare, taking over the film. She says he made inappropriate comments about porn, improvised kisses on set and created a hostile work environment.
Taylor got dragged in being mates with Blake who made some very cringe comments about Taylor being one of her "dragons" to use against Justin and I think she wants to stay out of it.

I agree with you. And she won't retire, she doesn't know what else to do with herself.

I liked the Opalite video but then I thought the 'garbage is still garbage' caption right at the end sounded weirdly aggressive, but I don't know what it refers to and probably nobody does for sure

I am not a Swiftie and I have only seen clips of this video but I read an interview somewhere where Taylor Swift had said that her brother had said to her that obsessing over ex-bfs or going back to them was like eating out of the garbage. It stuck in my mind as I think there is a lot of truth in that for some people. I would imagine that is what this refers to. I think there is a reference to this using the word trash rather than garbage in the lyrics.

Mumsnet should really update their talk guidelines to make it against the rules that if someone starts a thread and posters try to stop discussion on the topic in question be that Taylor Swift or any celebrity or subject that those posts are deleted it’s absolutely fucking tedious to continually read post after post saying but why! but why! it’s like listening to a group of toddlers.

Yeah it's true, this reference is in the lyrics. Well then if 'garbage is still garbage' is a generalised swipe at her exes at the end, while I acknowledge I don't know what happened in those relationships, and I think it's human nature to feel bitter when something ends badly or painfully, I think that line would have been better left out.

I don't read the garbage metaphor to be about the exa but about the relationships. Her brother's comment about "going back to toxic relationships is like eating out of the trash" means that the relationship is toxic and bad for you. And in this video "garbage is still garbage" means - if a relationship was garbage when you were together then it won't ever change.

Did her brother specifically comment about toxic relationships, or just past relationships that didn't work out? Because the lyric in 'Opalite' is 'I had a bad habit/Of missing lovers past'. She doesn't say anything about the relationships being toxic.

Exactly, and the video is about being attached to things which are bad for you.

The women in the advert is pouring love into a dustbin which cannot love her and smells bad. Taylor is weighed down by her rock. Domnhall keeps getting hurt by his cactus. It could be a metaphor for bad relationships, or for your own internal traits and traumas that prevent you from making meaningful relationships. There's no indication that she's calling out a specific ex.

Yeah all of that would be fine, but my issue with 'garbage is still garbage' is that it doesn't have that ambiguity over whether you yourself might have a role to play in relationships repeatedly not working out. It puts all of the blame on the other person. In some ways I think it would be preferable if she is calling out a specific ex, because if you're calling all of your exes garbage, it suggests there might be some self-examination that's missing.

To me it also just feels like an unnecessarily negative note on which to end what is meant to be an upbeat song about finding a relationship that actually does work.

So referring back to the eating out of the trash line, it just means that ruminating over past relationships and letting that block you from making new connections is never going to have anything good coming from it.
