Am not usually one to post these kinds of threads but this is so sad. I've loved her since childhood and am currently in the middle of a Schitt's Creek binge to take my mind off the usual winter bugs. She was such a fantastic actress and so, so funny.

Imagine thinking my entire cultural literacy hinges on recognising an actress from Home Alone. I’ll survive, promise.

oh wow 🤭 can I recommend Best in Show and A Mighty Wind, I think you might enjoy them

It’s “educate yourself,” not “oneself.” Once again. Correcting others clearly isn’t your strength.

😂

You idiot. Oneself is a reference to Moira Rose but you wouldn't know that would you?

PonyPrancing · 30/01/2026 20:30

K Kawwww, K Kawwww, Kaawwww.

RIP Catherine. Thank you for taking one of my most disliked characters and making her one of my most loved. I actually felt a pain in my chest when I saw the announcement on another site a few minutes ago.

Rewatch of SC very soon for me.

AbbotSade1985 · 30/01/2026 20:31

I was watching the John Candy documentary earlier on Prime, and she was talking about having a dream after he died, where she asked him why did he have to die. Turned over and saw the news about her death!

RIP Catherine ❤

Hermyknee · 30/01/2026 20:32

This is really sad. She was mesmerising on screen.

ThePoshUns · 30/01/2026 20:33

Moira Rose was my favourite comic character ever. Am so sad over this.

WinterCarlisle · 30/01/2026 20:33

Let’s all ignore the spectacular fuckwit that is @Netcurtainnelly. They’re obviously as thick as mince (sorry, mince).

I’m imagining Moira Rose’s response though…….

Netcurtainnelly · 30/01/2026 20:16

Most people will not.

I do agree that probably most people won't know her name but absolutely millions of people know who the mum from home alone is

But that's not the point is it, it doesn't excuse the crassness of your original post. Asking presupposes that you have an interest in the answer so it's a bit rich to now pretend to be above such things

Americano75 · 30/01/2026 20:35

My cat died yesterday and now this. 2026 can get in the fucking bin already.

Why bother bloody posting then?

Hermyknee · 30/01/2026 20:35

Beetlejuice and the banana boat song. Absolute classic. Self conscious younger me could never imagine acting like that. She was an icon.

There is ALWAYS one 🙄

FrothyCothy · 30/01/2026 20:37

I feel like I did when Robin Williams died. Like him, she is such a large figure in the lives of my generation. Such sad news.

I also feel sad for those who worked with her - especially on Schitt’s Creek as they seemed to be such a close knit group. Macauley Culkin’s tribute is very sweet and sad - he had such a terrible relationship with his own parents, I love that the two of them remained close.

SwankyPants · 30/01/2026 20:37

Yeah, because that is ALL SHE DID. That one film. 🙄

Seriously, the doubling down is just embarrassing now mate.

Americano75 · 30/01/2026 20:39

Of all the threads for there to be a stupid, pointless fight on. Fuck's sake.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 30/01/2026 20:39

Awww @SwankyPants that is so cute 😢

ThePoshUns · 30/01/2026 20:40

Be careful, lest you suffer vertigo from the dizzying heights of your moral ground.

Awwww, I'm sorry to hear that. This year isn't going too well for me either to be honest. Won't go into it why. Also, several other people I am close to are having a shit year so far. Hopefully it will get better for us all soon. Flowers

echt · 30/01/2026 20:44

I rarely speak out loud to my devices but said Oh no! when the news came through on the Guardian.
I only saw her in "Schitt's Creek" and loved the impossible glamour of Moira Rose, and Catherine O' Hara's wonderful acting.
She's woman of my vintage, so yes, 71 does feel untimely from where I'm standing. I wanted to be like her when I grow up.

Bloody sad start to my day.

ZoeHS · 30/01/2026 20:45

I am genuinely really sad about her death.

I have just started watching ‘Schitts Creek’ and it’s been getting me through a very dark time. Her character Moira Rose cracks me up.

My daughter and I only just watched Home Alone 2 (not the first time, obviously) last Friday.

So sad. I didn’t realise she was 71. She seemed so young still.

longtompot · 30/01/2026 20:45

Such sad sad news. 71 is really no age. I've not watched Schitts Creek so she will always be Kevin's mom to me. Will be even sadder watching Home Alone, for both her and John Candy no longer being with us
RIP
