To be so scared and horrified about ICE?

Sorry, I know there must be other threads about this, but I’m lying in bed alone , feeling really terrified about what’s going on in the US right now and what it will lead to. I keep seeing videos saying that Trump’s administration is behaving as though they don’t have to worry about winning an election because they will just seize power. I also saw a couple suggesting that this is the start of civil war. I think it’s such a dark time for the world and I am genuinely worried for my 6 year old DD’s future.

It worries me as well that Farage has said he plans to bring in an ICE type force if Reform gets into power (which is looking increasingly likely).

It's terrible what Trump and his administration do and say that's a given.
If it's affecting you mentally take a break from it .
For example I stopped looking at Daily mail and the comments section as it was racist ,sexist ,homophobic tripe and all in all very depressing.

What Farage says he's going to do and what's lawful in the UK are two different things also Reform have dropped point in the polls and it's a few years to GE a lot can change .

ColdBlueSky · 14/01/2026 23:14

It sounds trite but can you just stop
looking at those videos? Do something else more productive with your time.

ShowMeTheSea · 14/01/2026 23:15

I agree with others, to take a step back and don't watch the news for example, and put your phone down as that can become too much.
I completely agree that it's worrying but it'll get you nowhere immersing yourself in videos and shite online.
Sounds a bit trite but try to get out a bit more without your phone, walks in nature, read a book, fluff programmes on telly. Works for me anyway

ShowMeTheSea · 14/01/2026 23:16

Cross posted with coldbluesky there 😁

I appreciate the advice and I know this would be best for my mental health, but it feels cowardly not to watch or engage with what is going on in the world, like burying your head in the sand.

I agree with you that there are a lot of Brits who would absolutely love to be watching back to back clips of a British Ice tasing and manhandling brown people, plus a fiercely competitive scrap to be employed by them. I just hope there are an awful lot more who are poleaxed with horror at the idea.

HopSpringsEternal · 14/01/2026 23:18

You are right to be worried. We need to stand up to the rise of facism everywhere we see or hear it. Dont let racist comments go unchallenged wherever you see it. Call it out. Pull up people when they say the bullshit spouted by Reform etc al.
If yiu weren't worried then you are not recognising what is happening. And that is far more worrying.
I hope we are better than the US, more educated and less easy to fall for all.of the propaganda.

TheUsualChaos · 14/01/2026 23:19

This sort of thing is precisely why I don't read much news anymore and definitely don't spend time looking videos about it which are going to be mostly propaganda and fear mongering anyway. For the sake of your MH you need to take a big step back from it all.

ColdBlueSky · 14/01/2026 23:20

You can support in other ways that don’t involve social media.

ColdBlueSky · 14/01/2026 23:21

What good are you doing just watching videos anyway?

Waitingfordoggo · 14/01/2026 23:37

I hear you OP- I quite often get stuck in doom-scrolling and get myself in a state of great anxiety. I can’t do anything about Trump or Ice, I can only focus on my own family and community, and contribute to making those strong and peaceful. I am trying my best to use social media minimally (I only use FB and MN anyway- no TikTok, X, Insta etc), and I only engage with reading the news every few days. Trying to keep myself in the ‘now’ and focused on my own life and the people around me is the best medicine.

Why are you scared? It's bad but America is just another foreign country at the end of the day. It has nothing to do us in the UK at all.

I never watch the news because it's full of negativity, and has the same effect on me as watching an episode of EastEnders- it's end to end doom and gloom. It's bad for my mental wellbeing. Don't watch it. Focus on your own life and the world around you- family, friends, neighbours, community.

Really though what can you do to change it? Nothing.

You can be aware of world affairs without letting it control your every waking thoughts. We all know it’s happening but we can choose not to watch every single video or read every single report.

Vaxtable · 15/01/2026 01:23

I wouldn’t worry about reform. It’s highly unlikely Labour will call an election before it’s due. If local FB posts are indicative those reform councils are not getting a load of flack as the council tax is increased to the maximum allowed, when reform said they wouldn’t. The reality of running a council is kicking in with reform Cllrs, and I highly doubt those who voted reform this time will do so in the future

LadyWiddiothethird · 15/01/2026 01:33

I belong to a Facebook page for St Paul and Minneapolis. It is horrific what is happening there, lots of reports coming in tonight of agents raiding shops and workplaces.People are terrified and angry in equal measure.
There is also an App that shows where ICE are operating at any particular time. Our press aren’t reporting the true horror of it.

Ihavelostthegame · 15/01/2026 01:36

Totally agree with you OP. What is currently going on in the US is really scary. It’s almost unbelievable what the US has become in a matter of months.
Whilst I agree about not letting it affect your mental health and not being able to either control or fix the situation I don’t think ignoring it is the right approach either. America has sleep walked into this situation and allowed the orange buffoon and his merry men to wreck havoc. We have also done the same in becoming so interlinked with the US. We cannot ignore what
is going on. If it doesn’t frighten you then it should do. Ignoring the issue isn’t going to resolve it, standing up to it might.

Overtheatlantic · 15/01/2026 01:41

My niece told me that ICE have come to the part of Florida where she lives, which has a large Mexican population. She is very concerned, not least because, well, it’s Florida and someone carrying a gun will no doubt lose their temper and then people get murdered. Then again, ICE is exactly the reason why my redneck family carry guns. 🫣
