To be so scared and horrified about ICE?

Sorry, I know there must be other threads about this, but I’m lying in bed alone , feeling really terrified about what’s going on in the US right now and what it will lead to. I keep seeing videos saying that Trump’s administration is behaving as though they don’t have to worry about winning an election because they will just seize power. I also saw a couple suggesting that this is the start of civil war. I think it’s such a dark time for the world and I am genuinely worried for my 6 year old DD’s future.

Where are you watching them op as they aren’t on mainstream news websites apart from the woman who got shot? I watched one on Reddit and now am getting loads of them so if that’s you then you are doing it to yourself to be honest. The algorithm will show you what it thinks you want to see.

I shall report myself to the commie MNHQ!

BarbaraVineFan · 15/01/2026 08:01

I have seen several attached to Guardian reports. But also from social media, I admit. However, whenever I see one, I always verify it with other sources when I can

False. Shown in the stats released by the US government show that between 70% to 85% of detainees have no serious criminal convictions.
bare in mind that a non serious criminal conviction could be a traffic violation such as going through a red light as they approach that kind of thing a lot differently than the UK.

ICE are also using tax records to find people so hardly illegal immigrants if they’re bothering to register and pay tax but what they may be doing is working more than they’re allowed to under their visa.

EverythingGolden · 15/01/2026 08:25

When I heard about this situation my mind went straight to something similar happening here and the implications of that, so I get your concerns OP. I don’t lie worrying at night though because that’s pointless and you need to work on strategies to stop this.

Anyone seeing ICE and their behaviour as some sort of necessary evil (or just necessary) are being very shortsighted about the longer term implications for everyone including themselves. But unfortunately they don’t seem to understand or they are too nihilistic to care.

Watching what is happening in America right now is helping to answer the questions everybody has after learning about the Nazis and WWII: how could this happen and how could people go along with this? And we can even see people on this thread demonstrating those psychological mechanisms that enable horrible atrocities to proceed. The American regime are using Nazi imagery and Nazi tactics currently. Literally. Even if you've been against immigration etc. you would hope that for many there comes a point where a person should stop and think "no I don't want to support actual Nazis". However, it's hard to admit you've been wrong, obviously, or to accept the evidence of your own eyes when it's as horrific as this. But please people. Please let yourself see it.

I agree with you that there are a lot of Brits who would absolutely love to be watching back to back clips of a British Ice tasing and manhandling brown people, plus a fiercely competitive scrap to be employed by them. I just hope there are an awful lot more who are poleaxed with horror at the idea.

But there would be more against it, fortunately.

Absolutely. We must not look away.

It worries me as well that Farage has said he plans to bring in an ICE type force if Reform gets into power (which is looking increasingly likely).

Yes and people are talking about voting for him . They don’t think they could ever be the victims. Until its too late.

Marylou2 · 15/01/2026 08:39

Just stop watching them. When you travel, ensure all your documentation and visas are in order. Comply with the laws of the country you are visiting. Don't try to live or work illegally in another sovereign nation. You'll be fine.

Chalo · 15/01/2026 08:40

I love the US, have visited many times, but wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole at the minute.

EverythingGolden · 15/01/2026 08:41

I seem to spend quite a lot of my time listening to various people wanging on about all sorts of topics so I don’t think free speech has gone anywhere in this country.

I find confusing that the people who argue we don’t have free speech appear to be the same ones who think it’s fine to shoot someone in the face for dissenting. But there isn’t any point in trying to make sense because there doesn’t seem to be any.

Skybunnee · 15/01/2026 08:48

It is awful but the USA is a very very big country and most people are just getting on with their ordinary lives -for example Texas is nearly 5 times the size of the UK.
We get a false idea by watching tv and movies.

But I wonder if it has influenced our gov into GREATLY reducing immigration -not before time.

But it also shows what a balls up the Democrats made going for wokeism (favouring the very few) whilst not concentrating on the majority. And they still haven’t found a good leader to fight back against Trump.

For myself? No.

For my American family members yes.

For Americans in general - no. This is what they voted for.

Why does every conservative action get blamed on Democrats? Why can’t the right take accountability.

I belong to a Facebook page for St Paul and Minneapolis. It is horrific what is happening there, lots of reports coming in tonight of agents raiding shops and workplaces.People are terrified and angry in equal measure.
There is also an App that shows where ICE are operating at any particular time. Our press aren’t reporting the true horror of it.

Are you terrified for people in Australia or New Zealand where immigration authorities raid shops and work places too? The same also happens in the UK. Do you not think immigration laws should be enforced?

Edited

They are criminals if they are breaking immigration laws.

Sskka · 15/01/2026 09:00

Completely unreasonable.

This is absolutely nothing to do with you. It’s not happening in your country, it’s a domestic issue in a different country, the people being targeted aren’t from your country, nothing very bad is going to happen to them, if they are illegals then the law should be getting enforced anyway, and it isn’t going to lead to civil war.

I’m honestly furious at the idea that we all need to stress about everything. We don’t. It’s all people who have completely lost any sense of scale, winding each other up. It’s what got that poor woman killed in Minnesota, thinking she had to play hero in a dangerous situation which has almost nothing to do with her, and so hyped up to the extent that she’s blind to the risks of acting stupidly and getting herself shot.

We need to stop all this. It’s no good for anyone.

As opposed to the weekly antisemitic hate marches in the UK calling for violence against Jews across the world?

Echobelly · 15/01/2026 09:02

I'm horrified for America but not personally scared, though I am worried for the future of the UK and believe we need to be vigilant against fascism here too, because that is what all this is in America. That's not hyperbole - people warned ICE would just become an enforcement arm of government will and would attack American citizens too and that's what happened. We said they weren't going to target just 'criminals' or even illegal immigrants, that they would detain and attack people who looked or sounded like they might be immigrants, and that's what happened.

If they were an agency acting legitimately, then even if they thought the killing of Renee Good was justified, they would still investigate it to clear the officer and follow the rule of law but they're just saying now they can act as judge, jury and executioner without consequence.

At least we don't have guns here and I think it would be hard to introduce that degree of enforcement to the UK, but that doesn't mean we should rest on our laurels and should remain on alert.

hattie43 · 15/01/2026 09:04

Why are you terrified . A ridiculous response . You don’t even live in the USA and you need to get a grip . Like it or not he has been democratically elected .

MeltedSunshine · 15/01/2026 09:04

Given what is going on in Iran at the moment, the fact the US are enforcing their immigration laws seems an odd thing to concerned about in terms of other countries’ domestic affairs.

Exactly why nobody should be accepting or normalising fascistic behaviour or any other authoritarian abuse of power. There are elements of both left and right who would love a police state, and no rule of law except their own. Any group of people could become targets.
