To be so scared and horrified about ICE?

Sorry, I know there must be other threads about this, but I’m lying in bed alone , feeling really terrified about what’s going on in the US right now and what it will lead to. I keep seeing videos saying that Trump’s administration is behaving as though they don’t have to worry about winning an election because they will just seize power. I also saw a couple suggesting that this is the start of civil war. I think it’s such a dark time for the world and I am genuinely worried for my 6 year old DD’s future.

It needs targeted, intelligence-based policing, not hundreds of badly trained thugs dressed up as soldiers roaming the streets with machine guns.

Watching what is happening in America right now is helping to answer the questions everybody has after learning about the Nazis and WWII: how could this happen and how could people go along with this? And we can even see people on this thread demonstrating those psychological mechanisms that enable horrible atrocities to proceed. The American regime are using Nazi imagery and Nazi tactics currently. Literally. Even if you've been against immigration etc. you would hope that for many there comes a point where a person should stop and think "no I don't want to support actual Nazis". However, it's hard to admit you've been wrong, obviously, or to accept the evidence of your own eyes when it's as horrific as this. But please people. Please let yourself see it.

Never will I ever question the ordinary Germans during that time, not that I did anyway because I'm not that dim.
The just look down crowd are frying my head, same with all the genuine Im planning on moving or going on holiday to the US type threads that are popping up every single day.

Pattern recognition isn't a thing apparently.

I'm also not going to not worry about Reform getting in , because the people I know who would vote for them are not going to give 2 flying foxtrots about how they are performing in their councils, plus the Elon tampering of it all.

Have you looked at what is happening in the UK? Seen what the West Midlands Police are up to?

Is this poor satire.

If there was “targeted, intelligence-based policing”, would you be in favour of removing all the illegal migrants?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 15/01/2026 09:40

What would you like our skint wretched little country to do exactly? We are no longer a rich power. Literally all we can do is watch it happen.

Not vote for the mini me version that is Reform.

hattie43 · 15/01/2026 10:33

Goldenbear · 15/01/2026 10:25

Is this the Reform propaganda machine- Goebbels style! Since when did Reform care so much about anti-semitism. What a pile of crap!

Is that the best you can do . Rather than provide a comprehensive rebuttal you just insult .

BrieAndChilli · 15/01/2026 10:34

We have the equivalent of ICE in the UK - they are not equipped with Guns so not quite as aggressive but it is still scary when they do a 'raid'. I used to work in an Indian restaurant and they did a raid one day - They asked all the kitchen staff for ID and proof of residency. I remember asking them why they hadn't asked me for any ID to prove I was also legally in the UK - just because I was white didn't mean I could be illegal and it was racist to just ask the non-white people. No way if I was in the US I would have had the same reaction - I would have got my head blown off.

Have they murdered a woman?

Beaten up and robbed a sixteen year old?

Blinded a 21 year old?

MeltedSunshine · 15/01/2026 09:54

Labour is becoming authoritarian not a ‘nanny state’.

Are you honestly scared of Starmer? Such a scary man. 12 years of Tories gorging themselves in the public trough coupled with what even the idiots voting for Farage Aka UKIP, is what got us here!

KimberleyClark · 15/01/2026 10:38

BarbaraVineFan · 14/01/2026 23:06

It worries me as well that Farage has said he plans to bring in an ICE type force if Reform gets into power (which is looking increasingly likely).

Plaid Cymru are 14 points ahead of Reform in Wales according to yougov. They won’t get into power here.

That is a solid rebuttal, why be around the bush at this stage. You want what's happening in the U.S. to come here, then vote Reform?

Which would be fine if they confined their activities to removing illegal immigrants and criminals BUT they haven't done that up to now. In fact they seem to be moving further and further away from their remit.

Beat not "by".

Clinton deported 12 million people.
Obama deported 8 million people.
Trump has deported 2.5 million people.

stop worrying.

So what your saying is that Trump's violent thugs aren't actually any good at enforcing immigration law anyway? They just like beating up US citizens instead?

gamerchick · 15/01/2026 10:43

You can't remove a war time president. It's pretty clear he's realised he can't change the constitution to get a third term so he's going down a couple of dark paths.

I could absolutely see him starting conflict or simply just taking control by force.

Any fear people are feeling is real.

From what I was told during the number of raids I was present at at various jobs they act on tips. Once we had EE people checked, once non eu staff etc. So tip would come in "there is x person who seems to be working without RTW" and they would target based on description. Unless tips is general about "x place is employing illegal workers" or something like that.
Not sure how true that is though.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 15/01/2026 10:46

Agree 100% @FloorWipes, very well put.

It's not just US though is it, there are many atrocities being committed and the world stands silently watching. It's also social changes we all played a part in, allowing social media cause radicalisation, allowing children access to porn, embracing US based tech so we are all dependant now, allowing local industry collapse so we could save a few quid by shopping elsewhere. We all sleepwalked into it and we'll all have to justify to our grandchildren why we let this all happen, why didn't we care. I feel quite ashamed sometimes to be part of my generation.

No as it is pure fiction, pure hyperbole, pure fact averse Bull S**t!

MeltedSunshine · 15/01/2026 08:59

They are criminals if they are breaking immigration laws.

but the vast majority are not the rapists and murderers that the US government claim then to be though are they?
they are actually net contributors because an undocumented worker in the US, puts in through tax what they can’t actually take out (in terms of universal healthcare etc).

it’s just an easy picking for ICE to go after those that are easily found. Same with the detaining people at court houses who are going through the official process to be a legal citizen.

DdraigGoch · 15/01/2026 09:54

Come to think of it, has anyone else noticed that whenever someone finishes a comment with "just my opinion" or in this case "just my two penneth" you can reliably dismiss the preceding text as ill-informed drivel?

It's almost as if they know that they're going to be called out on it so feel obliged to caveat it.

No, I just can't be arsed to argue with lefties.

But there is nothing you can do about so we must just wait for nature to do its thing. He is nearly 80. I just wish there were more Democrats in the distance to challenge the orange monster.

ChequerToRed · 15/01/2026 11:07

I follow world affairs quite closely, and I’m far less concerned about ICE in the US than I am the Greenland situation, the potential collapse of NATO, a war on Europe’s doorstep that still has no real end in sight, and the unrest in Iran. All those have much greater impact on world affairs, especially considering the shady links between the last two (expensive Iranian proxies paid for by embargo busting oil deals that couldn’t stop the Iranian economy going into freefall and keeps the Russian war machine fuelled, literally).
There’s much bigger things to worry about than ICE.
