To be so scared and horrified about ICE?

Sorry, I know there must be other threads about this, but I’m lying in bed alone , feeling really terrified about what’s going on in the US right now and what it will lead to. I keep seeing videos saying that Trump’s administration is behaving as though they don’t have to worry about winning an election because they will just seize power. I also saw a couple suggesting that this is the start of civil war. I think it’s such a dark time for the world and I am genuinely worried for my 6 year old DD’s future.

He's a liar, dangerous man. Heading toward a nanny state. Free speech going down the pipe. Net zero and climate con. I could go on and on but I'm tired. Just my two penneth.

What do you mean by "free speech going down the pipe?" You're still free to say what you like.
You're not free to incite hatred though, which seems to be a lot of people's gripe lately.
Much rather him than unstable Trump.

What Farage says he's going to do and what's lawful in the UK are two different things also Reform have dropped point in the polls and it's a few years to GE a lot can change .

We'll just take the piss out of 'Farago'. He won't stand a chance 😀
Trump is a worry but I'm pretty convinced he'll get killed fairly soon, or they'll find a way to put him behind bars (hopefully in Mexico, Canada or Greenland)
If not, then yes, I think the USA could be headed for a civil war.

EmeraldRoulette · 15/01/2026 02:09

@Overtheatlantic "ICE is exactly the reason why my redneck family carry guns"

could you clarify this, please? So if ICE weren't operating, then your family wouldn't carry guns?

I'm going to bed by the way, so I'm not ignoring any reply that you might give - it's 2 am here.

What Utter rubbish! Im no fan of Starmer but he’s a heck of a lot better than any of the alternatives currently heading a party in the UK and certainly no worse than his recent predecessors.

There is no issue at all with free speech in the UK. You can say what you like. What you’re not free from is the consequences of your actions and frankly rightly so. And what is so wrong about being protective of our environment?
If you don’t like it here then perhaps pop across the pond!

I'm surprised at the people saying stop watching the news and do something more productive with your time. Understanding what's happening in the world is very important so that you can use the influence you do have in a positive way. Voting is one example. Videos can be one sided or made by conspiracy theorists so they alone are probably not helpful but don't stop engaging with the news.

I'm not surprised it's upsetting you OP because it's a very upsetting situation. It feels like the world is inching backwards towards the dark days of World War II. Focus on what you can do to help the situation. Little things like being a positive part of your community or volunteering to help immigrants through a charity can make a big difference in combating Trump's hate.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 15/01/2026 03:06

There’s not much I would predict confidently about the future @scorpiogirly but Starmer not creating an armed militia to hunt down minorities and shoot perceived dissenters in the face is definitely one of them.

I appreciate the advice and I know this would be best for my mental health, but it feels cowardly not to watch or engage with what is going on in the world, like burying your head in the sand.

I struggle with this aspect too. It seems like something we shouldn’t turn away from, but it’s certainly hard to digest. I think maybe setting a certain amount of time a day to catch up and then just switching off from it. Not easy when you wake up at three in the morning and stare at the ceiling though!

Absolute nonsense.

The social media algorithm has done its job on you.

Starmer has his faults, mainly that he tries to appease Reform supporters too much, but dangerous he is not.

Farage on the other hand adores Trump and loves what's happening in the U.S., and would love to bring it here. He's an incredibly dangerous Russian asset.

There are far worse news stories to engage in than ones on ICE if you really want to be miserable. Get off the news and do something positive.

Shitmonger · 15/01/2026 04:20

I’m far more concerned about what’s happening in Iran.

You don't have to watch videos to stay informed. Watching them changes nothing except your own mental health.
World leaders, lawyers, civil servants who need to know this stuff don't watch repeat videos - they read summaries or are briefed. You can choose to read a reputable news report and leave it at that.

IamNotBeingUnreasonable · 15/01/2026 04:51

I am 65.
I've learnt the hard way not to worry about something if I can't do anything about it. You need to do the same, otherwise you will drive yourself mad.

ThereAreOnlyShadesOfGrey · 15/01/2026 05:55

The Americans made their choice. They voted him in, now they’re paying the price.

People who make such statements as “I’m voting reform because labour aren’t doing what I want” might want to think about that when they make such flippant statements. Be careful what you wish for springs to mind.

That being said, I do think that we need to be concerned about what is happening in Greenland.

We can’t do anything about it, and panicking isn’t going to fix it, but if Trump goes into Greenland then things absolutely will become serious for all of us.

So funny when people say things like ‘cry harder and cope’ as it’s like having a direct line into their algorithm. I expect you’re really busy on a daily basis though, doing your own research so you’re not like the rest of the sheeple.

Half of them voted him in and we’re all paying the price.

Difference between ‘videos’ and reputable media sources. I read a newspaper and listen to the radio and that’s plenty. I’m well aware of the limitations of MSM as well but don’t believe tik tok and YouTube sources are particularly ‘better’

Really though what can you do to change it? Nothing.

Make sure you don't vote for Reform.

Probablyshouldntsay · 15/01/2026 07:30

yanbu to be horrified OP. I am too and I have the same concerns of reform using similar tactics against people who don’t look white enough (I’m white fwiw).
I think all we can do at the moment from the UK is write to our politicians, make sure we vote in the next elections, and protest like crazy if there is even a whisper of ICE type enforcement arriving in the UK.

Sartre · 15/01/2026 07:35

When I was a child my journey with anxiety started during 9/11. My mum was obsessed with the news, we watched it religiously every evening but we also had sky around that time so had constant news coverage. I was about 8 and completely terrified. Convinced terrorists were going to attack us.

My Grandma still to this day is obsessed by the news. So much so she’s convinced that because I work in a big city, I’m going to get raped and gave me a rape alarm. I’ve never felt safer than when in a big city as a woman, there’s people everywhere. She thinks I’ll get attacked on trains as well because of the news about sexual assaults on trains last year…

I try not to live my life like this, it’s really no life. I don’t avoid the news but I remain objective. Can I change anything Trump is doing? No, not remotely so there’s absolutely zero point letting it keep me up at night.

I wouldn't worry about Reform hopefully with this panning out across the pond their support will dwindle to f**king zero as you would really need to be a)thick b) a Sadist c) both to want all that over here!
