To have got “The Ick” 20 mins into date?

Went on a date yesterday, just lunch. OLD.

We got talking politics to which he proudly announced “It’s UKIP all the way for me!”

I said “Do UKIP still exist??” To which he looked a bit worried and said “Err I’m not sure to be honest? I think so?”

how can you “support” a party that you don’t even know still exists?? So I said “well, did you vote for them last time?” And he said “I think so, I can’t remember to be honest ha!” ???? I said “May elections? Did you vote for them then?” So he dodged the question and asked who I voted for. I told him and he said “oh yes, me too - I remember now”

Everything else went fine but this small snippet of conversation has put me off. AIBU? BIL thinks this was on me for “badgering” him about his political choices but he was the one who brought politics up - as well as who he allegedly supported!

That would give me turbo ick aswell OP.

Just thank your lucky stars that he brought it up on the first date and you didn’t find out 3 or 4 dates in 🫠😂

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/01/2026 14:44

I’d have got up and left after he said he supported UKIP.

You did well to stay as long as you did.

Biggest ick I got on a date was when he told me that a woman who hadn’t had sex for a while would ‘quite like’ to be raped.

Nope. Time to go home.

holymolly2 · 11/01/2026 14:44

He sounds a bit thick to be honest. And if he genuinely does vote for UKIP my values wouldn’t align with his and I’d explain this and not see him again. It kind of sounds like he either brought politics up to a) appear intelligent and interesting (he failed) b) to gauge your views c) to let you know early on that he’s a proud gammon.

Dollyfloss · 11/01/2026 14:46

Well you can cut short a date for any reason you like. Not sure why you’d think you’re being unreasonable?

Having someone come across as a bit thick (as in, not even knowing if the party they would vote for is still in power) is a very good reason!

I BEG YOUR PARDON?! 😳😳🫣🫣🫣🫣

They really do walk among us. What the actual fuck 😳

How did you get out of that one?!!
Politely make excuses? Or genuinely run for your life?! 😳

InterestedDad37 · 11/01/2026 14:46

Tell him to piss off 😀. UKIP to$$er 😂

TomatoSandwiches · 11/01/2026 14:46

He sounds offensively stupid, bullet dodged!

...oh my God. 🤢🤮

Huckleberries · 11/01/2026 14:49

They still exist, but I don't know if they have any candidates do they? I don't know why they still exist. Seems strange.

I'm going to guess that he meant Reform. He's not bright enough to be voting. Maybe he didn't really vote. Maybe he just thought it was a good subject to raise 😂

regardless, he is very thick.

Huckleberries · 11/01/2026 14:50

Curious to know how old he is.

I’ve gotten the ick 5 seconds into the date before , literally the minute he walked out the door of the restaurant to meet me 🙈 😂

Dear god I didn’t think anything could be worse than saying he supported UKIP.

I’m glad you got away from him. I worked in a call centre and a man told me whoever wrote the hold music deserved to be raped. I terminated the call.

PiggieWig · 11/01/2026 14:53

NBU at all. Weeded out quickly. I’d call that efficiency.

GRCP · 11/01/2026 14:54

@TheLightSideOfTheMoonwhat the actual fuck???

what the fuck is wrong with some people. That isn’t ick territory, that’s punch in the face territory. Jesus.

But yes, a UKIP supporter 🤢 but even worse a UKIP supporter who doesn’t even know who he voted for. Grim.

GRCP · 11/01/2026 14:56

I don’t think he understands politics and wanted to match you - but UKIP as an opening gambit is well dodgy.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 11/01/2026 14:59

He sounds like he's either twelve, or he really just opens his mouth and lets any old shit come out.

Either way, not really dating material.

Maybe play rape ?
You know the way? Like Sex game .
I can’t imagine any woman wanting to be raped , like come on , that’s different level fucked up , if a woman wanted to actually be raped .
Still what a thing to divulge on a first date , that he met a woman & that’s what she was into .
Why would you even discuss who you’ve met up with before to a potential person you want to date ..

Harrysarseinthedogbowl · 11/01/2026 15:07

And this is why the bottom quintile should not be allowed to vote.

localbutterfly · 11/01/2026 15:11

UKIP do still exist, but have gone full on Tommy Robinson/Katie Hopkins. Their leader is Nick Tenconi, who's also the only elected UKIP officeholder (he's on the Kent county council) and the COO of Turning Point. I think you'd be hard pressed to vote UKIP in most constituencies these days; most of their politicians, members, and supporters including the "Nigel Farage is my waifu" crowd went to The Brexit Party and now Reform UK.

Regardless of my own politics, I'd be unimpressed that he "proudly announced" "UKIP all the way" and then wasn't sure what he meant. Why not just describe his political position generally if he wanted, and say he just said he wasn't sure what party he'd vote for at the next election?

MsJinks · 11/01/2026 15:16

They do exist - Nick Tenconi is their leader - Nick/UKIP have just done/are doing a ‘Mass Deportation Tour’ of the U.K. - weirdly choosing cities where they are likely to be particularly unpopular. They aren’t in anyway likely to be mainstream, low numbers and odd.
For me I’d leave at mention of UKIP. If they’d proudly told me they voted Lib Dem but then knew nothing about them to this extent I’d think they were just saying to show off/align with some party they thought appropriate at that point. Anyway I’d judge that too as weird, untrustworthy and want to leave though may not run as fast as at a ukip supporter.
Sounds no use all round - afraid it’s try try try try again with dating - sigh.

JHound · 11/01/2026 15:18

I would have got the ick too. I can’t date stupid people.

He may have just been “testing” you. Which is a reason to cut him off in and of itself.

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 11/01/2026 15:18

I would be strangely unavailable if he messages again. It's fine to feel the ick on a first date, that's what they're for. I once went on a date and the way he said "ice and a slice? " every time he went to get me a drink really put me off!

Jesus H Christ….

GlasgowGal2014 · 11/01/2026 15:20

He probably means he support the party led by Nigel Farage, but doesn't pay enough attention to politics to realise that is now Reform rather than UKIP. UKIP didn't field candidates in the 2025 election and were a non-entity in the 2024 election too. Supporting any right wing party would be a major ick for me, only compounded by the fact he's clearly supporting them without really thinking about it.
