Went on a date yesterday, just lunch. OLD.

We got talking politics to which he proudly announced “It’s UKIP all the way for me!”

I said “Do UKIP still exist??” To which he looked a bit worried and said “Err I’m not sure to be honest? I think so?”

how can you “support” a party that you don’t even know still exists?? So I said “well, did you vote for them last time?” And he said “I think so, I can’t remember to be honest ha!” ???? I said “May elections? Did you vote for them then?” So he dodged the question and asked who I voted for. I told him and he said “oh yes, me too - I remember now”

Everything else went fine but this small snippet of conversation has put me off. AIBU? BIL thinks this was on me for “badgering” him about his political choices but he was the one who brought politics up - as well as who he allegedly supported!

Probably after making his declaration he couldn’t really bring himself to admit he actually doesn’t engage or follow really and so had to tie himself in awkward knots to avoid showing any lack of knowledge on his part.
Quite a lot of people get themselves in this position eg/ love yoga, it’s the best then they barely know what it is. It could be driven by ‘I’m amazing and know everything’ tendencies or ‘I’m so awkward I get in a verbal mess’ ones, or an attempt to impress.
I’m not sure his party was the issue here - I think it’s his refusal to own he knows nothing about them whilst implying he does - he should have just said ‘no idea’ not that interested in it all - perhaps he was trying to be ‘niche’ - and failed!

Pacif · 12/01/2026 13:09

Is it me or what? I went on a date last night and again got the ick half hour in!!

The offence this time …

we sit down and he looks at me and says “so, what do you think?” 🤔 I said “about what?” So he kind of presented himself with his arms and said “this, what do you think?”

Who does that?? What was I meant to say?

  1. ”very impressive!”
  2. ”could use some work”
  3. not my cup of tea personally but this place is nice, have you been in here before?”

Or is it me? Was that normal of him and I’m being weird?

That’s definitely not you. What a twat.

Think I’d have made my excuses and left after that

MsJinks · 12/01/2026 13:23

Not you @Pacif- made me laugh on here - I’d have left quite soon on the date though and probably just gone umm and looked awkward on the spot.
My relative had a bowling date - he got a strike - he did the arms wide thing and looked around at all other bowling lanes/people. There was no 2nd date.
Lots of frogs I’m afraid - I gave up on them as the ‘stories’ got less and less funny ha - but single suits me better anyway.
But good luck digging through - I’m sure you’ll get a good one in the end, people do.

That’s exactly how I did react - an awkward “errr … “ 😂

talking of bowling though … I once got the ick on a bowling date as he kept lifting his leg behind him when he bowled 😂

I’m not desperate to find mr right though, I’m quite happy single, I’m only doing it for the odd good night out and the small chance that I’ll eventually meet someone amazing. If not … I’ve got plenty to look back at and laugh when I’m on my death bed. 😂

Def not you. I’m enjoying the updates on your dates though, perhaps you’d consider doing a series for us?

UninitendedShark · 12/01/2026 15:57

It’s a barren wasteland out there!

Sartre · 12/01/2026 15:59

Instant ick for me too. Anyone who supports Farage would be in that category. I can accept centrist conservatives but anyone with a far right agenda grosses me out.

Hellohelga · 12/01/2026 16:30

Right wing and thick, what a catch.

Huckleberries · 12/01/2026 18:28

@MsJinks oh I think he succeeded at being niche! UKIP is very niche!

@Pacif sorry to hear it was no good yesterday. When you say presented his arms, you mean like a muscle man pose? I would not be able to cope with that I would fall off my chair laughing. Or did he sort of present them across the table? Oh my God, I can't stop laughing. Were they impressive?

Yabu for discussing politics on religion so soon.

It’s hard to explain, you know when someone puts on a new outfit and shows someone and does a kind of “this is it, what do you think?” Kind of thing and rolls their arms downwards and out in a “ta-da!” Motion? 😂😂

A second ick date in a row made me think of that theory about buses... nothing for ages and then three turn up at once.. If there's anything in that, you are due a 3rd ick date... and like other's on this thread, we wait with baited breath to hear what the next Mr Ick ploy will be.

FYI are you sure number 2 wasn't just doing it to get a laugh? At least it sped things up I guess.

This is particularly weird given that you've never seen his arms before

If he was new to working out and showing a friend his progress then fair enough. But a strange thing to do to someone on a date.

Fingers crossed for Wednesday!

shuggles · 12/01/2026 19:49

@JHound He said he voted in May. Why are you talking about “years ago” when he voted in May and should have a clear idea of who he voted for then?

So he could well have voted for UKIP in May 2025, and then he may have been surprised and unsure when asked if UKIP still exist as it's possible the party could have ceased to exist between May 2025 and today.

Your misogyny is leading you to write nonsense.

What a bizarre comment to find misogyny in a discussion that has absolutely nothing to do with gender.

You could have written "your anti-semitism is leading you to write nonsense," it would have been equally bonkers.

When you mentioned the arms, the what do you think? I thought of Deacon from "What We Do in the Shadows", where the vampires dress up to go out.

It's at 44. seconds. And of course Deacon is adorable.
