To have got “The Ick” 20 mins into date?

Pacif · 11/01/2026 14:41

Went on a date yesterday, just lunch. OLD.

We got talking politics to which he proudly announced “It’s UKIP all the way for me!”

I said “Do UKIP still exist??” To which he looked a bit worried and said “Err I’m not sure to be honest? I think so?”

how can you “support” a party that you don’t even know still exists?? So I said “well, did you vote for them last time?” And he said “I think so, I can’t remember to be honest ha!” ???? I said “May elections? Did you vote for them then?” So he dodged the question and asked who I voted for. I told him and he said “oh yes, me too - I remember now”

Everything else went fine but this small snippet of conversation has put me off. AIBU? BIL thinks this was on me for “badgering” him about his political choices but he was the one who brought politics up - as well as who he allegedly supported!

Yes I keep a close eye on politics - watch PMQs every week, follow all the major parties on social media (apart from Green) … UKIP never get mentioned anymore.

You don't have to follow them to know they exist though.

ComedyGuns · 11/01/2026 19:32

Was he 85?

Yeah you do. Who has time to know about every single tin pot party with one man and a dog as a member who might field a candidate in a handful of constituencies if they are lucky?

Reform have only been around since 2021... (previously Brexit as I mentioned before). Times move quickly in politics and what was irrelevant yesterday becomes very relevant overnight.

It's pretty unprecedented, certainly highly unusual prior to then. Not many new parties are backed by billionaires and the might of the Russian state.

@Pacif I can't think of anything more dull and boring than selecting a partner based on political ideology. You have also shown that your political literacy isn't great either, given you weren't aware that UKIP continues to exist.

You also haven't said why he supports UKIP. Rather than looking at someone's political badge, it's important to assess why they support the part they do.
For example, if he supports UKIP because he wants environmental protections to be relaxed, then his heart his in the wrong place.
If he supports UKIP because he doesn't like the EU, then he may have just been mislead by the Brexit campaign, which told no shortage of lies.
If he supports UKIP because he wants people to stop bypassing immigration controls by crossing the English channel in small boats, then he is supporting a completely sensible policy that almost every person in the country supports, given the disgusting modern slave trade that is happening across the channel.

By the way, in my experience, it's the "progressive" men with soft, feminine voices, that are really creepy and weird and will constantly be sexist once the mask slips off.

Rolls eyes

No what are you on about actually??
PP said she once went on a date with a guy who said he met with a woman one time who said she would like to be raped !

Go back and read the post again.

If you're talking politics 20 minutes into a date it doesn't sound very promising, however coherent and harmonious the opinions on both sides may be. However, I am slightly surprised by the knee-jerk hostility on here to someone whose political views people disagree with. Dismissing everyone of a Brexity inclination as vile and thick didn't turn out to be very persuasive in the referendum campaign, did it? A close relative of mine texted all her contacts the day after the referendum, to say "I can't believe there's so little love in the world"; I replied that I didn't think she had read the EU Directive on the Importation of Duck Eggs in the spirit in which it had been intended. If you don't like someone's political views, what's wrong with trying to change their mind rather than just judging them and walking away?

People can have what requirements they wish in a partner. And that includes political compatibility.
That that may not be one of YOUR requirements does not mean that it’s problematic to have that as requirement. There is nothing wrong with being choosy as to who you share your body and life with.

Life is to short to try to “change” romantic partners.

@Pacif My ick wasn’t about UkIP, it was about announcing loyalty to a party that you don’t even know still exists - and not remembering who he voted for??

I'm not sure why you find that so disgusting and repulsive. That's very strange.

Is it not conceivable to you that someone who doesn't actively follow politics, and who maybe hasn't voted for a number of years, may not be entirely aware that a party they liked previously might not still exist?

It’s strange to pledge allegiance to a party CURRENTLY and not know if they even existed.

What are you struggling with? He did not say he “was” a UKIP man.

So he likely supported UKIP 10 years ago when they were popular. He likely doesn't actively follow politics, so that's why he still supports them while being oblivious to the fact that they are not the political force they once were.

I don't understand why you find this confusing.

No you don't - we had a by-election in May and there was a UKIP candidate on the ballot. I don't follow them. But if you are politically engaged then you will encounter them in one way or another. I don't have time to know about every party, but I take time to know those on the ballot paper.

It might just be that he's not very interested in politics. If everything else is okay I would find out more. Some people just don't understand politics and will just say anything. He might be a wonderful, supportive, kind and caring man. That's still possible!

You’re preaching to the choir here - I’m right wing myself. (Not far right before anyone starts!)

No I didn’t know UKIP still existed but then I’m not pledging allegiance to them am I?

Don’t mention this to tonight’s date. You’ll give him the ick.

I’d have left sharpish.

Me too, if politics were brought up 20 minutes into a first date 😁

A wonderful, supportive, kind and caring man…who is also racist and stupid.

He’s ’not very interested in politics’ and is potentially ‘wonderful, kind and caring’, but he randomly decides to lead the conversation on a first date by declaring his allegiance to UKIP?

And plenty of areas won't have a UKIP candidate on the paper, nor a Monster Raving Loony, nor a Count Binface candidate.

Well only Uxbridge had Count Binface. My point being you don't have to follow them to know they exist if they do stand in your area and UKIP stand almost everywhere, even now. They are not the dying embers people hope they are.

UninitendedShark · 11/01/2026 21:07

I’ve got second-hand ick now.

Neepsn · 11/01/2026 21:08

If that's who you are and you're not interested in politics, that's fine

But this guy actually said he was "UKIP all the way" and then didn't know himself if they still existed or not. That's just somebody being really stupid. Why would anyone want to date somebody really thick? You don't proudly declare that you're doing something and then be unsure whether the thing you're doing is possible! 😂 isn't that like me saying "I think I played tennis last week, oh wait, no maybe it was padel, oh wait, what's the difference?"

whatcanthematterbe81 · 11/01/2026 21:41

Politics 20 mins into a date is wild 😂

He said he voted in May.

Why are you talking about “years ago” when he voted in May and should have a clear idea of who he voted for then?

Your misogyny is leading you to write nonsense.
