To have got “The Ick” 20 mins into date?

Went on a date yesterday, just lunch. OLD.

We got talking politics to which he proudly announced “It’s UKIP all the way for me!”

I said “Do UKIP still exist??” To which he looked a bit worried and said “Err I’m not sure to be honest? I think so?”

how can you “support” a party that you don’t even know still exists?? So I said “well, did you vote for them last time?” And he said “I think so, I can’t remember to be honest ha!” ???? I said “May elections? Did you vote for them then?” So he dodged the question and asked who I voted for. I told him and he said “oh yes, me too - I remember now”

Everything else went fine but this small snippet of conversation has put me off. AIBU? BIL thinks this was on me for “badgering” him about his political choices but he was the one who brought politics up - as well as who he allegedly supported!

It’s like one of those AIIBU threads where 99% say yes you are and the OP keeps doubling down with ‘no I’m not you’re all wrong’

I read it all wrong , I finally realise it 🙈

It sounds like if he was any thicker, he’d set. Deeply unattractive and juvenile. I don’t like talking politics constantly because it’s tiresome, but to have such little knowledge of politics in the current political climate that you can’t remember who you voted for at the last election, never mind declaring you voted for UKIP, would be a massive ICK!

Edited

if he was any thicker, he’d set

I genuinely snorted! 🤣

I read it all wrong 🙈

And at no point did you go back and re-read it to check your facts, and kept insisting the other poster was wrong.....

Yeah you did...but fair play to you, you came back once you had realised.

No I actually did but not until loads of posts later .
Why else do you think I asked you “ am I being stupid & reading it wrong “ ?
I’ve admitted I was wrong .
Jeez !

My dating ick was when he walked into a Saturday afternoon coffee date in a hideous cheap suit that looked like something dd by Mr Byrite in 1985, complete with a matching tie and pocket handkerchief and to complete the look, blue mirrored sunglasses that probably cost 5 euros from the looky looky man on Benidorm beach.

First and only time I picked up the whole tab just to get out of there

Sorry but I really laughed at the mental images your post created, not just of that cringe-inducing outfit but of you grabbing the bill, paying it at the speed of light and then legging it out of the door

No worries, easy to do.

Garroty · 11/01/2026 18:00

Is the fact that he supports UKIP not more of a concern than the fact that he can't remember if he voted for them?!

I mean yeah it's embarrassing that he's so politically disengaged that he doesn't know if the party he supports still exists, but are you not more concerned that he's a massive racist?!

She’s had the balls to come back and admit she was wrong (which rarely happens on MN) I don’t think there’s any need to keep on at her about it.

Blinky21 · 11/01/2026 18:12

So he's not intelligent and almost certainly racist

I got the ick when I received this message the other day from a potential date.
Mate, I don’t need protection from you or anybody else.

I’d have got up and left after he said he supported UKIP.

You did well to stay as long as you did.

Biggest ick I got on a date was when he told me that a woman who hadn’t had sex for a while would ‘quite like’ to be raped.

Nope. Time to go home.

Bloody hell!

333FionaG · 11/01/2026 18:31

I would have been up out of my chair and out of the door within minutes of knowing the man I was with voted UKIP.

Thank you throwaway20262025 .

Now see sparklyglitteryballs , you need to back off & leave me alone baby 🤪 😂

shuggles · 11/01/2026 16:14

@Pacif I can't think of anything more dull and boring than selecting a partner based on political ideology. You have also shown that your political literacy isn't great either, given you weren't aware that UKIP continues to exist.

You also haven't said why he supports UKIP. Rather than looking at someone's political badge, it's important to assess why they support the part they do.
For example, if he supports UKIP because he wants environmental protections to be relaxed, then his heart his in the wrong place.
If he supports UKIP because he doesn't like the EU, then he may have just been mislead by the Brexit campaign, which told no shortage of lies.
If he supports UKIP because he wants people to stop bypassing immigration controls by crossing the English channel in small boats, then he is supporting a completely sensible policy that almost every person in the country supports, given the disgusting modern slave trade that is happening across the channel.

By the way, in my experience, it's the "progressive" men with soft, feminine voices, that are really creepy and weird and will constantly be sexist once the mask slips off.

You’re preaching to the choir here - I’m right wing myself. (Not far right before anyone starts!)

My ick wasn’t about UkIP, it was about announcing loyalty to a party that you don’t even know still exists - and not remembering who he voted for??

No I didn’t know UKIP still existed but then I’m not pledging allegiance to them am I?

I don't understand the argument about only knowing about the party you support - you need to know the general (if not detailed) political landscape in order to have a well-rounded view of politics...

LlynTegid · 11/01/2026 19:02

Look on the bright side, you found out before a second date.

Neil Hamilton was their leader last time I looked.

Zanatdy · 11/01/2026 19:05

I’d have left sharpish.

I'm not sure why you find that so disgusting and repulsive. That's very strange.

Is it not conceivable to you that someone who doesn't actively follow politics, and who maybe hasn't voted for a number of years, may not be entirely aware that a party they liked previously might not still exist?

I didn’t say I only know about the party I support. I know enough about all the relevant parties. I simply don’t see the likes of UKIP relevant.

You might not, but this is how the outliers rise unfortunately. Reform have only been around since 2021... (previously Brexit as I mentioned before). Times move quickly in politics and what was irrelevant yesterday becomes very relevant overnight.

Yes I keep a close eye on politics - watch PMQs every week, follow all the major parties on social media (apart from Green) … UKIP never get mentioned anymore.
