To have got “The Ick” 20 mins into date?

Went on a date yesterday, just lunch. OLD.

We got talking politics to which he proudly announced “It’s UKIP all the way for me!”

I said “Do UKIP still exist??” To which he looked a bit worried and said “Err I’m not sure to be honest? I think so?”

how can you “support” a party that you don’t even know still exists?? So I said “well, did you vote for them last time?” And he said “I think so, I can’t remember to be honest ha!” ???? I said “May elections? Did you vote for them then?” So he dodged the question and asked who I voted for. I told him and he said “oh yes, me too - I remember now”

Everything else went fine but this small snippet of conversation has put me off. AIBU? BIL thinks this was on me for “badgering” him about his political choices but he was the one who brought politics up - as well as who he allegedly supported!

I would be strangely unavailable if he messages again. It's fine to feel the ick on a first date, that's what they're for. I once went on a date and the way he said "ice and a slice? " every time he went to get me a drink really put me off!

That has given me the ick just reading it, just saying it once would have been enough 😂

TFImBackIn · 11/01/2026 15:26

That would have been enough for me to leave the date, OP, the thought of him being stupid enough to vote for UKIP.

Pacif · 11/01/2026 15:28

Well I’m heading out for a date in an hour or so with a different person so watch this space 😂 you watch … this one will be a full on nazi 😂

Can't even remember UKIP. WHO was their leader?

Last I heard of them it was Farage. I thought they died when he left

Yanbu. Well done for not walking out on the spot.
I got the ick 20 seconds into a speed date when he announced his focus in life is too become a tory MP.

AndMilesToGo · 11/01/2026 15:32

That's the kind of date where you quickly gulp down the end of your coffee and say 'Oh, is that the time? I need to home and get back on the apps looking for someone other than a man who can't remember whether or not he voted for UKIP, or indeed whether they still exist, despite claiming to support them. Bye!'

rainbowsparkle28 · 11/01/2026 15:33

No, YANBU. Politics is one of those areas that fundamentally if we are not on the same page I just could not be with compatible with. Or equally someone that isn’t bothered / “not political”, to me just suggests someone that is ignorant/apathethic, not saying they have to be running for the local MP but to have some sense of self and where you stand and things that matter to you and some engagement with the world around you is a basic 🤷‍♀️

Marmalade71 · 11/01/2026 15:34

Yeah they’re now to the right of Farage which says it all really. Odd thing to bring up on a date, but it works in your favour that he did!
Hope your date today goes better!

I wonder if he ever made it? 😂 that wouldn’t have bothered me as I was a Tory supporter up until recently

Oh very good 😊
Make sure you come back & update us on how date goes !
I’m also in the dating game , love hearing all the stories 😁
Hope you have a nice time ! X

Huckleberries · 11/01/2026 15:40

I'm now really bugged by whether he meant UKIP or Reform

Please can you ask him before you block him 😂

I hope today's date is better!

Arlanymor · 11/01/2026 15:42

If someone brings up politics you would at least expect them to know what they are going on about. UKIP aren't my cup of tea in the least, but I've no time for blockheads who just say stuff for the sake of it, particularly when it comes to politics. For the record UKIP do exist, but since Farage left they've floundered.

And as I like to remind people lest they forget - Farage left to join the Brexit Party... who rebranded as Reform. Yes Reform used to be the Brexit Party - it's become my recent life's mission to remind people of this of late when talking about the Senedd elections... you didn't vote for Brexit, but you are considering voting for Reform... Well, did you know...?

Ask upfront to see his tattoos... just in case! Good luck!

Flomingho · 11/01/2026 15:48

You have had a lucky escape. Run, block and avoid. Odious individual.

Allisnotlost1 · 11/01/2026 15:50

WhatIsTheCharge · 11/01/2026 14:44

That would give me turbo ick aswell OP.

Just thank your lucky stars that he brought it up on the first date and you didn’t find out 3 or 4 dates in 🫠😂

Turbo ick 😭

Same! Lucky escape, whatever you asked make sure you ask if in the chat from now on to avoid having to get gussied up to hang out with a Kipper in future.

Same shit, different wrapper no?

NotMyRealAccount · 11/01/2026 15:52

If I hadn't taken against him for another reason, I think I might have been inclined to invite him to expand upon his reasons for being "UKIP all the way". If he exposed himself as being so unaware that he thought UKIP was still Farage's party or came out with toe-curling racist views I'd be unavailable for future dates. However, you're allowed to get the ick for any reason or none at all.

Gloriia · 11/01/2026 15:52

It just demonstrates he's not very bright if he doesn't know if a party actually exists or if he voted for them.

Do you tend to match with people like this? Maybe chat before meeting in future to see if they have basic levels of intelligence prior to a meet.

Littlebitpsycho · 11/01/2026 15:54

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/01/2026 14:44

I’d have got up and left after he said he supported UKIP.

You did well to stay as long as you did.

Biggest ick I got on a date was when he told me that a woman who hadn’t had sex for a while would ‘quite like’ to be raped.

Nope. Time to go home.

Omg WHAT

TwistedWonder · 11/01/2026 15:55

Well I once got the ick about 2 minutes in 😂

I agree with you on this one. I recently met a man out and about who was attractive, articulate, friendly and I thought he was real catch. He then sent me a FB friend request and I saw his page was filled with shared Reform and Tommy Robinson posts. Instant ‘no thanks’

Allisnotlost1 · 11/01/2026 15:57

Missj25 · 11/01/2026 15:02

Maybe play rape ?
You know the way? Like Sex game .
I can’t imagine any woman wanting to be raped , like come on , that’s different level fucked up , if a woman wanted to actually be raped .
Still what a thing to divulge on a first date , that he met a woman & that’s what she was into .
Why would you even discuss who you’ve met up with before to a potential person you want to date ..

What are you going on about? Nobody told him she was ‘into’ this, it came from his own cesspit of a mind.

Or you could be making excuses for an actual would-be rapist...

Perrylobster · 11/01/2026 16:11

Unless it was a joke then I would have wrapped it up a few mins later.

shuggles · 11/01/2026 16:14

@Pacif I can't think of anything more dull and boring than selecting a partner based on political ideology. You have also shown that your political literacy isn't great either, given you weren't aware that UKIP continues to exist.

You also haven't said why he supports UKIP. Rather than looking at someone's political badge, it's important to assess why they support the part they do.
For example, if he supports UKIP because he wants environmental protections to be relaxed, then his heart his in the wrong place.
If he supports UKIP because he doesn't like the EU, then he may have just been mislead by the Brexit campaign, which told no shortage of lies.
If he supports UKIP because he wants people to stop bypassing immigration controls by crossing the English channel in small boats, then he is supporting a completely sensible policy that almost every person in the country supports, given the disgusting modern slave trade that is happening across the channel.

By the way, in my experience, it's the "progressive" men with soft, feminine voices, that are really creepy and weird and will constantly be sexist once the mask slips off.
