Do you ever do it?

I have a couple of times and like it, but always feel a bit weird going in. Also-this is crazy, do you ever feel a bit scared on your own? Ive been in before when I was the only one in there, does that leave you vulnerable?

Planning to go tomorrow and sneak some treats in my bag from the shop, i’m thinking Revels or Minstrels and some Monster munch
What would you take?

I have odeon limitless and go on my own all the time. Loads of people do it

Why is Odeon Limitless so much cheaper than Curzon Cult membership? 🧐

No idea. We have both here - the Odeon deal is so much better. And the cinema is perfectly nice. It has about 18 screens, all pretty decent standard, and the staff are lovely. I saw the Korean film No Other Choice yesterday so it's not like they only show blockbusters. I'm sticking to the Odeon.

I saw No Other Choice on Tuesday. The local city centre Odeon closed down a while ago - think it’s being turned into flats. Was a bit of a flea pit anyway. The Curzon is nice but not as swish as an Everyman, but there isn’t one of those here either. Other choices are the dinky Picturehouse (with the terrible loos) in the nicest area of town, or a revered independent with a slightly quirky schedule.

Just got back tonight and there were 5 people on their own scattered about. No issues. Perfectly normal thing to see in a cinema.

I’m not a cinema goer but I adore theatre & often go on my own. I’ve been tonight (albeit with a friend) but the two women sat in front of us were both there alone. Both early thirties I’d say, evidently gone straight from work to see Sheridan Smith in an Ayckbourn. I started doing it in my late thirties, around 12 years ago, it wasn’t as common then, it’s brilliant to see it being so normalised now. I eat out alone a lot too - did so this lunchtime - I love the peace of the experience.

I think it’s very empowering for women to do these things alone, with their own money. And I’d genuinely feel sad for any woman who didn’t feel emancipated enough to do the same, & hope she found the confidence to do so in future.

In my forty odd years of adult life I’ve never observed a time when it seemed unusual to be at the theatre, or a concert, or a restaurant on my own.

Either I was egregiously unobservant, or I was too busy enjoying myself to care whether other people were alone.

FettleOfKish · 30/01/2026 07:38

Ooh was it good @NoExchangeBeforeChristmasThen? I’m going to see it next week. Two nights in London for work and two shows booked, one with a friend and one on my own.

Superhansrantowindsor · 30/01/2026 07:45

I love going on my own. Always book the same seat, get sweets before and after hot chocolate from the foyer. I take a very large pure wool wrap that I drape over me like a blanket. Don’t care if people think I’m weird. I find it blissfully relaxing. In fact - I might just go today.

It was good - Sheridan Smith was fantastic as was Romesh Ranganathan, it’s his first time performing in theatre I gather & shouldn’t be his last as he was excellent.

It’s an interesting play, rather unlike Ayckbourn’s other work, far more fantasorial than his usual middle class family conflict. There are moments of poignancy & hilarity, but I prefer his other plays - I’m an Ayckbourn purist I suppose! I felt most affection for Gerald the husband which again is quite unusual for Ayckbourn as his focus is often on women as the focus of sympathy. This piece felt unfinished to me - I was left wanting to know how it all settled down. It was panned by the critics when first shown in 1985 but audiences have consistently loved it. Enjoy - & let me know what you think!

Arran2024 · 30/01/2026 15:31

I went to see Marc Almond at the Brighton Dome with my husband - there was a single seat next to me and a woman in her late 70s came and sat down. She was very apologetic to me, like I would think she was wierd, but she said she went to concerts on her own all the time as she could never find anyone her age who wanted to go. Good for her.

Happyeleven · 30/01/2026 18:37

Never been to the cinema by myself. But went to the theatre by myself last night and absolutely bloody loved it! So would definitely do cinema now

Abracadabra12345 · 30/01/2026 20:03

I love going to the cinema on my own and am secretly slightly put out that my DH has suddenly started wanting to go 😀

I went to see a brilliant tribute singer this week and a guy next to me (with his wife) expressed commiserations that my husband wasn’t with me

You weren't sat in the second row at the Duke of Yorks seeing Woman in Mind were you? 😀

No but that sounds great too. I’ve recently noticed more folk going by themselves and thought why the heck not.

henlake7 · 31/01/2026 11:43

Thinking back I can remember going to see Cats at my local theatre alone when I was 16.
Clearly going solo hasnt bothered me much at all!😄
