Cinema alone

Do you ever do it?

I have a couple of times and like it, but always feel a bit weird going in. Also-this is crazy, do you ever feel a bit scared on your own? Ive been in before when I was the only one in there, does that leave you vulnerable?

Planning to go tomorrow and sneak some treats in my bag from the shop, i’m thinking Revels or Minstrels and some Monster munch
What would you take?

I could never go to the cinema alone. Unpopular opinion I know.

Why not?

I was thinking The Housemaid? We have a 7 year old so only normally go with her as wouldn’t pay for a babysitter for the cinema, everyone else at work etc

Oooh, hadn't seen this advertised. Looks good.

Why on earth not? Do you do anything else alone?

BeforeSigourneyWeaverTheyWoveTheirOwnSigourneys · 08/01/2026 21:07

On the rare occasion I manage to get a couple of hours alone I LOVE going to the cinema.

I managed to see a horror film a few months back, got myself all settled with my irn bru and revels, enjoying just sitting alone without a small human hanging off me, and then a lady from further down the row came over and invited me to sit with her and her boyfriend so I wasn't alone 🤣 that's the only time anything like that has ever happened though.

I'm hoping I can go during the day next week to see something as well.

PhuckTrump · 08/01/2026 21:09

When I was working overseas and single, I went to the cinema solo a lot.

IfyouStealMySunshine · 08/01/2026 21:09

I love it and been a few times, sometimes for a morning showing with a pastry and a coffee and sometimes in the evening with a bag of revels and decaf coffee or cheese savouries and a bottle of fruit cider! Take my massive scarf as a blanket.

I will say though OP I know what you mean feeling a little vulnerable I tend to go on the back row so that no one is behind me.

Why not? I go to the cinema, theatre and eat out alone. I am even going on holiday alone in June because I want a week away from everyone. Are you not happy to be in your own company?

RunYouJuiceBitch · 08/01/2026 21:09

I'm a horror fan, but I have only one friend who also enjoys horror. So I frequently see horror films alone. 👻

AdventureAnonymous · 08/01/2026 21:10

My husband does this at least once a month! I'm not so into films but I do go to the theatre by myself fairly often. Never even thought that people might find it odd!

sociallydistained · 08/01/2026 21:10

Constantly on my own it's my fave thing. I actually went last weekend with three others and I hated it I don't know why 😂

Christmaseree · 08/01/2026 21:10

I go once a week on my own and have for 11 years.

RaininSummer · 08/01/2026 21:11

Several times a year when there's films I want to see. My partner isnt keen on cinema.

RedRiverShore6 · 08/01/2026 21:11

DHs away and I was thinking of going to see Housemaid alone, he probably wouldn't like it anyway

It is good and so is the book.

I go nearly every week on my own as i have a cinema pass and it’s just easier to pop to the cinema on my way home from work than plan with others.

Many other people on their own too - never been the only one in a screening though.

yep, minstrels and malteasers are good.

Once there was just one other person in a screening and we had booked seats two seats apart which was a bit weird so I budged down a bit.

Gowlett · 08/01/2026 21:13

Brought a mini M&S cheesecake last time.
Luckily I had a little spoon in my bag, he he…

Slightyamusedandsilly · 08/01/2026 21:14

I LOVE the cinema on my own. I need to make the effort to do it more.

I actually prefer it to going with someone. I can eat all the way through without embarrassment and cry as much as I like. If I love or hate the movie I don't have to hear someone else dissect it afterwards.

Redflagsabounded · 08/01/2026 20:55

I do it loads. I avoid Fri and Sat evenings as there's mainly couples, but there's always plenty of solo flyers at other times. It's only noticeable when I book and pick a seat, my cinema has seats in pairs and you can see lots of one person bookings. In the cinema it's really not noticeable.

I always sneak in a small Pepsi bottle and a pack of chocs, often Minstrels or Maltesers. Big pockets in my coat 😁

You don’t need to sneak them on you know! You can take your own food into the cinema as long as it’s nothing hot 🤗

19lottie82 · 08/01/2026 21:15

I love going for something to eat myself then a solo trip to the cinema. Bliss!

DrinkingIssues · 08/01/2026 21:15

Absolutely love it Odeon Luxe wine reclining seats etc. Everyman hellooooo

helpfulperson · 08/01/2026 21:17

I love the cinema alone. Depending on the timing I take a glass of wine in my water bottle and relax.

Thewonderfuleveryday · 08/01/2026 21:18

Peanut M&M's and a cup of tea.

YouBelongHere · 08/01/2026 21:21

I go alone all the time - it was very daunting the first time, I went to see 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One' and I just remember also finding it really awkward. I also thought everyone was looking at me and wondering why I didn't have any friends but obviously no one was thinking that 😂

It doesn't feel awkward anymore, I love going there and also the theatre alone.

Watched 'The Housemaid' with my Mum - we both loved it. Some minor changes from the book and I hadn't been keen on the cast announcement but loved the film!

The more you go the less awkward and scary it feels 😊

Disturbia81 · 08/01/2026 21:22

Loads. People who can’t do things alone are the weird ones.

Duckswaddle · 08/01/2026 21:22

I go all the time by myself. Why would you be scared? I really don’t understand women who can’t do things on their own.
