Do you ever do it?

I have a couple of times and like it, but always feel a bit weird going in. Also-this is crazy, do you ever feel a bit scared on your own? Ive been in before when I was the only one in there, does that leave you vulnerable?

Planning to go tomorrow and sneak some treats in my bag from the shop, i’m thinking Revels or Minstrels and some Monster munch
What would you take?

Go on my own often…snacks, sofa to myself and a cocktail…PERFECT X

ColdNotintheSun · 09/01/2026 11:00

I go most Sunday afternoons using the odeon cinema membership card. It’s one of my favourite times of the week. I’ll be watching Hamnet on Sunday

ClaredeBear · 09/01/2026 11:02

I don’t like going to the cinema with anyone else. I don’t like sharing my sweets.

Christmaseree · 09/01/2026 13:06

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 08/01/2026 23:54

I go once a week, if not more. I have a cinema card and I want to see everything. I go in the day and there are plenty of people who go alone. All sorts of people. Not creepy loser weirdos which is what people on here seem to think.

I agree, I didn’t even realise going alone was potentially a ‘thing’
I watched Sentimental Value yesterday, Sing Song Blue last Saturday and Housemaid the week before on my own.

HeadyLamarr · 09/01/2026 13:14

I have an Everyman membership and go on my own all the while. I like having a cocktail brought to my seat. Maybe olives or hummus and pitta as well.

Londonnight · 09/01/2026 13:32

I am on my own so always go to the cinema on my own. I can't see what the problem is going anywhere on your own, I do it all the time. I saw Song Sung Blue last week and looking to see Hamnet this weekend. My son saw in last week in Canada and said it's worth seeing.

AllIdoistidyup · 09/01/2026 13:33

I go alone nearly every week! Me, coffee and a bag of sweets. Bliss.

mondaytosunday · 09/01/2026 13:38

i don’t go to the cinema now but have gone loads of times on my own. It’s fine! I usually buy popcorn not sweets.

HorrorAndHaagenDazs · 09/01/2026 13:39

I love going on my own.

StoppingByWoodsOnAColdEvening · 09/01/2026 13:43

I never get these posts, as if going to the cinema alone was the equivalent of being dropped into wartorn Mogadishu with only the clothes on your back and a deathwish.

Seeing a film in the cinema involves sitting in the dark and watching something in silence. Its pleasure in no way depends on, or at least should not depend on, having someone to engage in mid-scene conversations with. Unless you go out for dinner or a drink afterwards with whoever you're seeing the film with to discuss it, it is literally an activity that does not gain from having another person present.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 09/01/2026 13:43

I’ve been on my own before and it’s a lovely thing to do.

Re snacks - I wouldn’t take anything with too much of a rustly packet, or that smells. Otherwise, the world’s your oyster! I don’t think you even have to sneak things in, do you? It’s not banned in most cinemas afaik!

Was Sentimental Value good? It looks interesting.

Ted27 · 09/01/2026 13:44

Id love an Everyman cinema.

When my son was younger I used to go to the matinées while he was at school and take sandwiches and a flask of tea.

Edited

When DS was a newborn I used to go to lunchtime showings of gloomy French films at the local arthouse cinema, even though it probably had fleas. He was asleep in a sling, and there was virtually never anyone else there, so I figured he was OK.

MsOtisReflects · 09/01/2026 13:49

I have Curzon membership and try to go as often as possible. The hour’s walk to my local cinema makes it two birds, one stone. I’ve always been happiest to go alone - and prefer to be amongst other solo viewers because they’re generally better behaved than couples or groups.

Sunday afternoons, G&T and popcorn. Otherwise, coffee and a brownie.

Nothing, you dont need to eat just eat something before you go. You wont annoy other peoole either with the noise.

No its not strange to go alone Why would it be?
Do you think nobody dies anything on their own then?
Theatre, Cinema, holidays etc.

MsOtisReflects · 09/01/2026 13:54

Since Christmas:

Marty Supreme - entertaining but I wasn’t thrilled.

Sentimental Value - honestly epic.

Hamnet - performances fine, but I didn’t feel particularly engaged.

All above have current threads under Films on MN

Butchyrestingface · 09/01/2026 13:55

I used to go on my own occasionally. I doubt anyone else even thinks about it, far less comments on it.

I take my own flask of tea or juice plus a huge elephant box tin of store bought popcorn and a bag of minstrels and feel all smuggy mcsmugface about not paying the cinema’s inflated prices.

foodymcfoodface · 09/01/2026 13:56

I don't feel scared but YANBU to keep an eye on your surroundings. It depends on your area/ the layout/ whether there's a few other people in the room too. Best to be vigilant but don't let that stop you from going.

Spidey66 · 09/01/2026 14:00

Love going on my own, though usually stick to the daytime screenings.

No not for me, I didn’t get why it was meant to be good.
Hopefully Hamnet tomorrow will be better.

Brought a mini M&S cheesecake last time.
Luckily I had a little spoon in my bag, he he…

Hilarious 😂 Heard someone on radio say they once took a take away carvery in the cinema😂No problem going by myself. Would not take Monster Munch- they stink. My snack of choice would be peanut M and Ms.

FettleOfKish · 09/01/2026 14:13

I go the cinema alone and theatre matinee shows. I once heard a lady say to her friends that she felt sorry for me and her friends seemed very quick with the reply that they thought it was a good idea as no one would be making comments ,asking questions or popping to the loo often and disturb their group. I smiled as they were obviously making comments about her behaviour.

Ha, I wonder if anyone ‘felt sorry’ for me when I went to an evening performance of To Kill A Mockingbird in the west end. I hope not, because my excellent seat cost £19 on the day because it was a solo seat, they’d likely paid £100 each for the same row. I feel a bit sorry for them really… Grin

MsOtisReflects · 09/01/2026 14:13

Noisy or odorous cinema snacks should mean instant banishment to an uninhabited island with no potable water. 😡

zingally · 09/01/2026 14:25

I go by myself all the time - love it!!
