Do you ever do it?

I have a couple of times and like it, but always feel a bit weird going in. Also-this is crazy, do you ever feel a bit scared on your own? Ive been in before when I was the only one in there, does that leave you vulnerable?

Planning to go tomorrow and sneak some treats in my bag from the shop, i’m thinking Revels or Minstrels and some Monster munch
What would you take?

I enjoy it, but I think it depends on my mood (and the film!) x I’d go M&Ms 👀

BlackCat14 · 08/01/2026 22:07

I did it once earlier this year. During the day in the half term holidays. I loved it! But admittedly would rather go with someone else and dissect the film on the way out etc.

Fingalscave · 08/01/2026 22:08

I have been a few times on my own. I've also been to the theatre alone, it doesn't bother me, I like my own company.
My friend thinks it's weird and that I'm very brave! But then, she can't do anything alone, she can't even go shopping by herself.

echt · 08/01/2026 22:14

I go on my own a lot, not least because it's often a spur of the moment thing, and arranging with others means postponing the date, etc. etc.
I also like morning showings at a particular cinema because the shopping street is interesting.
Sometimes I've been the only person there. Never felt unsafe.
Food - never eat in the cinema, preferring light lunch afterwards if I'm hungry.

VictoriaEra · 08/01/2026 22:21

I go regularly on my own. It’s lovely. And to the theatre. Sometimes it’s nice to concentrate and not worry about anyone else’s reactions.

VictoriaEra · 08/01/2026 22:24

Wine and crisps. Saw A Complete Unknown three times.

ChaliceinWonderland · 08/01/2026 22:25

My bank( monzo) gifts free cinema tickets. Go once a month by myself. Popcorn and a coke. 2 hours just for me!
The boyfriend tried to come last time I said get tee fuck! My time is my time

BootsandCatss · 08/01/2026 22:29

I’ve been alone once before felt a bit awkward at first but then noticed plenty of other people sat alone and once the film started I couldn’t care less. It’s only been once due to not having much free time to go but I am planning on going next week by myself to see The Housemaid, will absolutely be taking my own snacks in because what’s going on with the cinema prices?!?!

youalright · 08/01/2026 22:30

Ive never been to the cinema alone but I absolutely would, I often see people alone in cinemas, id actually rather do this then go to a restaurant or pub alone.

mylefthand · 08/01/2026 22:40

I do it all the time. I have the Odeon limitless card so go a few times a month.
I love going on my own!

SusanSHelit · 08/01/2026 22:48

I much prefer going on my own than with other people. It may not be seen as the 'norm' but it's honesty just such a great escape from the world for a few hours, phone off, snacks out, feet up (I always book a recliner seat). Just me and whatever it is I want to watch. No interruptions.

It's pure bliss.

Miranda65 · 08/01/2026 22:49

Of course it's not weird. I always go alone - and often to the theatre alone too.
There are always plenty of people by themselves, because it's a real treat.

(Though I would never take food, because eating in the cinema is a horrible habit. I might treat myself to lunch or whatever beforehand though).

madaboutpurple · 08/01/2026 22:56

I go the cinema alone and theatre matinee shows. I once heard a lady say to her friends that she felt sorry for me and her friends seemed very quick with the reply that they thought it was a good idea as no one would be making comments ,asking questions or popping to the loo often and disturb their group. I smiled as they were obviously making comments about her behaviour.

FollowSpot · 08/01/2026 23:35

I can’t begin to see what the problem with going to a film on your own might be.

I do it all the time. I go with friends too but I can’t bear any talking during the film and they seem unable to resist commenting or asking questions.

Snack? I don’t bother but whatever you take don’t rustle it. (So no popcorn,)

Tarkan · 08/01/2026 23:51

I used to do it all the time. I haven’t been alone since I forgot about stairs in my row when I was quickly nipping to the loo and I fell and either badly twisted my ankle or broke something in my foot. I had to get my dad to come pick me up afterwards. Blush

Our local one is a small independent one so I buy my snacks and drinks there to support them. My mum and I once snuck a whole box of wine into a chain cinema though, trying to pour it in the noisier parts was harder than we realised.

Also for the Minstrels lovers, get a cinema popcorn (your choice of sweet or salty) and tip a bag of Minstrels into them. Perfect cinema snack.

CunningLinguist2 · 08/01/2026 23:53

LOVE going to the cinema on my own.
Bliss & switch off time

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 08/01/2026 23:54

I go once a week, if not more. I have a cinema card and I want to see everything. I go in the day and there are plenty of people who go alone. All sorts of people. Not creepy loser weirdos which is what people on here seem to think.

IOweMySanityToBasilParsley · 08/01/2026 22:05

I love going alone, usually at lunchtime, I take a packed lunch. Ive been in there on my own once and must admit I was a bit scared. I sat there and thought ''if someone came in here and attacked me now, nobody would hear me screaming'

This thought has crossed my mind too

I have done it once, in a foreign country when I was young waiting for a train in the dark (think waiting 12 hours for a train). Felt odd but I was 19.

Ive missed lots of films because I haven't gone on my own..

I get a week day off. I have often thought I could go on my own (husband and friends sometimes have day off too) and I tend to try to go with them. I spend ages trying to organise going to see a film with someone- can't find a date that works then end up not seeing it. Daft really.

When I go on my eeekday off with hubby (once/twice a year) there is always at least one lone person in there.

I'm going to go on my own next time 😃

Itsnotjustmeisit · 09/01/2026 10:36

Plusbwatbwhatwber you want. No one will smell or hear you 😃

Mum2Fergus · 09/01/2026 10:37

All the time!

cramptramp · 09/01/2026 10:38

I love going alone first showing in the day because I hate the noise other people make when it’s busy. I wouldn’t take any sweets that you’ve got to keep dipping into because the packets rustle. And absolutely definitely not monster munch!!! I usually just get a drink.

Mumoflovelyboys2 · 09/01/2026 10:41

I go a lot. My fav time is midweek in the afternoon on my NWD. I don’t book though if there’s just one other person as I wouldn’t feel safe if it turned out to be a lone male. Luckily there’s always a few others when I check a booking again.

if I go with a friend or my DH on a weekend I now find it annoyingly busy and noisy!

viques · 09/01/2026 10:44

Looking forward to Hamnet, just as soon as I can sit through a film without coughing and infecting everyone . A cup of hot chocolate and some sweeties and I will be set up for a couple of hours.

Mumoflovelyboys2 · 09/01/2026 10:46

@viquesYes me too! It’s out today. :-)
