Do you ever do it?

I have a couple of times and like it, but always feel a bit weird going in. Also-this is crazy, do you ever feel a bit scared on your own? Ive been in before when I was the only one in there, does that leave you vulnerable?

Planning to go tomorrow and sneak some treats in my bag from the shop, i’m thinking Revels or Minstrels and some Monster munch
What would you take?

Fireonbutfrozen Saw the Housemaid on Monday Afternoon really good .Quite a bit of tension built up toward the end, and a really good twist !

TheClocksFast · 10/01/2026 14:25

Our little cinema (not the main Cineworld one) does drinks (including a big mug of tea/coffee), cakes, snacks, etc. that you can take in to the film (and they have tables for your comestibles). No settees, sadly.

It is completely normal and unremarkable to go to the cinema on your own.

I find it weird how often this comes up as a question. I've never considered it any different to going for a coffee on my own or getting a train or loads of other normal things.

Yeah I find it weird as well. Also the do you go to the pub or restaurant on your own questions. The pearl clutches show up with 'oh my goodness I would NEVER'

Hilarious 😂 Heard someone on radio say they once took a take away carvery in the cinema😂No problem going by myself. Would not take Monster Munch- they stink. My snack of choice would be peanut M and Ms.

Once arranged to go with a friend who brought a takeaway Nandos in to eat during the film. I was not overly happy with that! At least partly as it made me hungry 😆

Gnrdave · 11/01/2026 09:11

I go quite often on my own, I love it.... getting lost in the film instead of worrying if the person next to me is enjoying it. Take your snacks and settle in, I like popcorn with chocolate dumped into the bag or box and I wash it down with a beer or 2 or coke depending on my want.

All the time, more often than with anyone else actually. It’s my little escape, a night out of the house when I was single, and now I leave DH at home with the toddler and watch something for a couple of hours without scrolling on my phone. Never felt vulnerable or scared. Never felt weird about it.

I’m a die hard pick & mix fan though so I don’t take my own sweets, I get them there (although pertinent to note that you don’t have to sneak these days, it’s perfectly fine to take your own in the majority of cinemas!).

It's liberating. If I really wanted to see something and no-one was available, or they weren't interested I wouldn't hesitate. I will go to a restaurant on my own too. DH doesn't always share my interests, that's fine, I don't share all of his. Enjoy 🍫🍫

Peonies12 · 11/01/2026 09:31

Of course it’s totally fine. I don’t get needing to go with someone else! It’s much more feasible for me to go alone, as have a child so DH has to stay. And we have different taste in films

SlothCat · 11/01/2026 09:35

Yup, I go on my own all the time. I love it, I have an unlimited card and go most weekends. Occasionally with people, but mostly on my own. I see a lot of people on their own. Staff don't seem to think anything of it at all. Like someone else who posted above, I'm a massive pick n mix fan so mostly get that.

MsOtisReflects · 11/01/2026 10:11

Why would random cinema staff have an opinion on people watching films on their own?

miss79guided · 11/01/2026 10:32

Fupoffyagrasshole · 08/01/2026 20:53

I go alone weekly at least ! It’s my escape from toddler bed time and down time

my husband got me a membership for the Everyman cinemas for Christmas so I get lots of free and discounted tickets

free and discounted - like the quick sale isle at the supermarket
> want to get thru the door

Ferrfoxache · 11/01/2026 11:08

Hell Yes !! Done it a few times as my OH isn't a Cinema type of guy, Loved it !! Was weird the first time when i went to See 'Indiana Jones and the KOTKS' as i felt paranoid that everyone was staring at me. But then thought FK it !! Done it again for 'Sherlock Holmes GOS' more confident this time, big bag Maltesers, couple of packets of Cheese and Onion Discos and a bottle of Pepsi Max, Nobody cares, also safer going in the day time x

Shell18celhave · 11/01/2026 11:22

I had a unlimited pass for a few years, used to go all the time especially straight from work whilst bf was on shifts. Used to grab a subway & coffee at the cinema. Once was just me & another guy, from the rustling sounds & the smell he was eating his tea too, fish & chips!
Go & enjoy it

No, but I've bit the bullet and bought myself a ticket to go see a comedian on my own. Will be the first time I've ever done it. If I wait for someone to go places with me I'll never go anywhere.

That’s my thinking, I went to a Rick Astley concert the Christmas before last. Afterwards a few people said they would have gone with me but I’ve found in the past when I’ve asked friends to do stuff they usually say no especially if it’s out of their comfort zone.
So I booked myself a taxi each way, a front row ticket and treated myself to a lovely Christmas experience.

averythinline · 11/01/2026 18:00

Yes to going on your own its great... Can just take a few times if you're not used to it... Absolutely no to monster munch they stink and crunchy things shouldn't be allowed in my view... especially when quiet dialogue bits are on. (Personally wouldn't allow popcorn either.. ) Revels and other quiet non smelly treats ideal...

EmotionallyWeird · 11/01/2026 18:07

I go to the cinema alone a lot more often than not-alone (although still not that often). To me, that's just the way you do it, and has been for most of my life. DH isn't that interested in films, and to the best of my knowledge neither are any of my friends who live locally. I have a lovely friend who is a real film buff but she lives in another country and we rarely see each other in person.

Also, I can't really see the point in going with someone else, because you can't really interact with them during the film. If someone actively wanted to go with me I wouldn't turn them down, but I don't think I'd gain anything by having them with me, other than having someone to do a different activity (maybe dinner) with before or after.

I don't think there's anything embarrassing about going on your own. If anyone notices at all, and it's not something they would do, they'll probably just assume you're such a serious film buff you go to everything, with or without company.

What snacks to take? For the sake of your fellow watchers I'd suggest something not too crunchy, otherwise just choose something you love.

I bet u had a fab time x

I wanted to go and see Mario at the Hydro last year but I decided not to cause I'd feel awkward, I wish I had now. I don’t have friends and I know I'm missing out on a lot of things with the attitude that I need people to go with.
I think my new year's resolution is to get out my comfort zone and go to more things on my own at least I've started with a ticket for Gary Meikle x

MsOtisReflects · 17/01/2026 20:32

I guarantee if you do start going out more you’ll soon have loads to talk about - and people (potential new friends) will be enchanted.

Fireonbutfrozen · 24/01/2026 11:42

So I finally got to go on my own yesterday, but had to leave before it ended to pick up my Dd from school 😩 It was The Housemaid and I didn’t realise it was 2 hrs 15 mins, assumed it was 90 minutes…so I probably missed the most exciting part!

I guess the one disadvantage of doing things alone is that you do have to be responsible for making arrangements that suit you …

At least you got there. How did it feel (aside from the time confusion)?

I go frequently. I used to have a pre pay all inclusive card so it made sense to go often but now I don’t live near to that cinema but I still enjoy a regular trip. I really like not having to unpick it afterwards with anyone! Film geek clearly. I favour munchies.

henlake7 · 24/01/2026 12:21

I go 2 or 3 times a week as I have an Unlimited membership. Always around midday though as it takes me an hour to walk there and I dont like coming back in the dark!
My snack of choice is a meal deal as I take my lunch in with me!😁

Been going on my own since a teenager and a couple of times I have scored an empty screening (its the best!).
