Cinema alone

Do you ever do it?

I have a couple of times and like it, but always feel a bit weird going in. Also-this is crazy, do you ever feel a bit scared on your own? Ive been in before when I was the only one in there, does that leave you vulnerable?

Planning to go tomorrow and sneak some treats in my bag from the shop, i’m thinking Revels or Minstrels and some Monster munch
What would you take?

The snack combo sounds wonderful. Maybe a little hot toddy in a flask would go down a treat with that selection ?

I could never go to the cinema alone. Unpopular opinion I know.

Why not? Are you one of those people who has to chat throughout the film?

InterestedDad37 · 08/01/2026 21:29

YABU for Monster Munch - they're delicious, obviously, but too noisy for the cinema!
Box of Maltesers is the only acceptable and reasonable cinema snackage. 2 people = 1 box, 1 person = also 1 box.

Busybeemumm · 08/01/2026 21:30

Team love it! Enjoy. I would take treats that don't have a noisy packet.

stomachamelon · 08/01/2026 21:31

We have a local cinema which is tiny and I love going to that to watch films everyone else avoid eg ‘the golden squirte about the porridge championships. It’s escapism at its finest!

PullTheBricksDown · 08/01/2026 21:32

Love going to the cinema alone. I take snacks and a nice cold drink and sometimes treat myself to an ice cream. Given that it's dark and people can't see who you are with, it’s one of the best things to do alone without feeling self conscious. I am thinking of going to The Housemaid and Song Sung Blue solo at the moment. I'm happy going with others but if no one else is bothered about the film I'll crack on and go alone.

I'm a horror fan, but I have only one friend who also enjoys horror. So I frequently see horror films alone. 👻

I'm in the same boat, if only we knew each other! I'm going to see The Bone Temple sometime next week.

Alpacajigsaw · 08/01/2026 21:35

I like going on my own, I’ll try and pick a quieter showing time so it doesn’t feel like I’m the only individual in a crowd. I don’t sneak treats in either, you’re allowed to
take stuff into the cinema! I usually take in a coffee

MoominMai · 08/01/2026 21:35

Accidentally discovered the joys of going to cinema alone in my late 20s when no one wanted to go watch the rerelease of The Exorcist with me lol. Then watched a whole series of films alone including The Others in a theatre where I was the only one! Very brave lol

It felt a lot more relaxing not hanging around worrying how late my friend was going to be this time especially as she then took ages buying a stack of food whereas I’ve already got my pre bought economy snacks in my bag haha and aargh the stress of worrying about missing the start of the film lol

And now at 52 and single after having always gotten used to always snuggling up with a partner, I’ve regressed and wondering if I could have the courage to do it again 🤞

twilightcafe · 08/01/2026 21:35

Once the lights are out, who is going to know (or care) that you're on your own?

If there's something I want to see, and no one else wants to go - I'll take myself to the cinema. Why wouldn't I?

FourEyesGood · 08/01/2026 21:37

I much prefer to go on my own. There’s something really comforting about it.

notacooldad · 08/01/2026 21:37

Ive lost count the number of times I've been myself!
I started going since I was about 14 or 15 and im 60 now.
Never had a single issue.
Last time I went was a few weeks ago when a work course I was on finished early so I went into a local Vue by myself

With regard to sweets, take the quietest I hate food rustlers!!

Yes but they taste better if you feel they’ve been illicitly snuck in 😂

Allthegoodhorses · 08/01/2026 21:39

Go to a decent cinema like an Everyman and you won’t feel vulnerable. It’s like a theatre with sofas and armchairs and they bring you food and drink to your seat. I watched many films there alone. I couldn’t go to a big Vue or similar on my own but a small cinema much nicer. Last film I watched was the housemaid on New Year’s Day.

OliviaBonas · 08/01/2026 21:43

I have only just started doing this and went to see The Housemaid on my own. There were other people on their own too. Go for it!

FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren · 08/01/2026 21:44

I haven't but that is purely because every time I mention a film I'd like to see someone tags along, I would happily go alone though.
Peanut MnM's or Maltesers for me and a cinema hotdog 🌭.

Quagmireschin · 08/01/2026 21:44

I go all the time, I’ve got no one to go with so if I didn’t, I’d never get to go at all.

Rightsraptor · 08/01/2026 21:51

I often go alone and I like it best that way. I'll usually go in the afternoons, I never eat anything so no sweets of any kind (I don't want to get into the habit) and only drink water.

In fact, and Storm Goretti permitting, I might go and see 'Hamnet' tomorrow.

heretowin · 08/01/2026 21:58

I've been to see films in the daytime: usually lots of space, most people behave. I think anything you do on your own that's often done by couples and groups will make you feel a bit self conscious at first but it shouldn't be a problem.

Snack wise those of you who remember Kermode & Mayo's Radio 5 film programme will know there's rules! Nothing smelly or noisy so Monster Munch is iffy but knock yourself out with the Revels.

Dollymylove · 08/01/2026 21:59

I went alone a few years back when Grease was being shown, I think it was the anniversary of its release. I had only watched it on TV before so seeing it in full on the big screen was glorious. I went alone because DH refused to entertain the idea of going with me. Probably worried about his street cred in case anyone recognised him 🤣

Chickenssss · 08/01/2026 22:00

Fireonbutfrozen · 08/01/2026 21:06

Why not?

Just doesn’t appeal to me but then I wouldn’t go to a restaurant alone either.

mindutopia · 08/01/2026 22:03

Yes, I go on my own. Usually I go with dd, but sometimes she doesn’t want to see something or it’s not really appropriate for a 12 year old. I love it.

Never felt weird or uncomfortable. That said, I love my own company. I love a solo meal out and I also go on holiday alone every year.

SocksAndTheCity · 08/01/2026 22:03

I can't remember the last time I went to the cinema with somebody else, and I'm in there at least once or twice a week?

It wouldn't even cross my mind that it was an activity that required another person - it's not like I'm going to chat all the way through the film 😳

IOweMySanityToBasilParsley · 08/01/2026 22:05

I love going alone, usually at lunchtime, I take a packed lunch. Ive been in there on my own once and must admit I was a bit scared. I sat there and thought ''if someone came in here and attacked me now, nobody would hear me screaming'

singswithitsfingers · 08/01/2026 22:06

I do it regularly. Why would you feel unsafe.
