DUMB SHIT People say

I eat in a local restaurant weekly after work, so I typically go in with no makeup on. I am 35 and suffering with really painful cystic acne. Tried everything, my face is a mess.

Anyway, I go in on New Year’s Eve fully made up in makeup. The owners wife turns to me and says, wow, I didn’t even recognise you with makeup on, you look so much better with makeup on. After seeing I was embarassed and me mumbling ahh I suffer with my skin she stands and lists all the things allergy, hormones, everything as though to help. Yet making me feel worse and more of a spectacle. What she was saying is. God you look dog rough when I see you in the week. You should continue to paint your face to hide the offensive marks. I didn’t fucking appreciate it. Not one bit.

So got me thinking. What dumb shit have people said to you that ruined your day?

I used the counselling service that I was offered after struggling with an abortion. The abortion was and still is the right decision however it absolutely broke my heart

After explaining my feelings for about 2 minutes the guy interjected with “well if you think about it, it JUST an embryo”

I did put in a complaint, 1. check that we’re happy to talk to a man (I wasn’t) and 2. just what the fuck was that comment. I’ll never forget that, or how much I struggled to repeat what he’d said when I called back

Jack80 · 08/01/2026 11:52

Mil said not long after me having one of our girls now 18 and 21 said you haven't gone back to how you were since having them. I said it take time I know I am chunkier God why do people state the obvious.

@OneDearFawn There is a certain irony in your OP. Are you not aware that the word 'dumb' is highly offensive in the context you have used it? Maybe consider your own words before criticising others.

Which synonym would you prefer? as in stupid
not having or showing an ability to absorb ideas readilydon't call him dumb just because he makes the occasional mistake like the rest of us.

Bumped into somebody I know

Him ‘how’s your Mom’
Me ‘she died a couple of months ago’
Him ‘oh I’m sorry to hear that, i liked your mom but my wife never did’

I actually found it quite funny but not so sure everybody would

parthyphibday · 08/01/2026 12:31

I had a single hip replacement at 23 (limped from 18) and people ALWAYS commented on my limp. It was awful - especially at the age (44 now). one of the 50+ janitor men at work coined me 'the lady with the limp'

HungreeHipp0 · 08/01/2026 12:38

This one has always puzzled me as I'm not quite sure what the alternative would be.
"Are you going to let her walk naturally"
Said about my DD when she was a baby. I asked what they meant, but they just repeated themselves, so I think my response was that she will walk when she's ready.

After 22 years of trying and IVF, I had a miscarriage at 16 weeks. I worked on a hospital ward and the ward priest asked me if I'd been off sick, when I told him about miscarrying my IVF baby he told me that my baby was "an abomination against God"

Fuck me I'd have reported that bastard to the Diocese. That's wicked.

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 08/01/2026 12:46

Last August, I spent time with my friend and her 16-year-old daughter, G, and we had perfectly pleasant chats about careers and lots of other things. G had just received excellent GCSE results - mostly 9's and nothing below a 7.

G asked me what my results were. I told her (I had 10 passes, mostly A's, a couple of A*s, 1 B and 2 C's). G replied, "yeah, it's funny how back then, everyone seemed to have shit GCSE results".

She's a nice girl and I really don't think this was meant as an insult, I think it was actually intended, if anything, to make me feel better for not having a long string of A*'s! But I was a bit taken aback as my results were actually considered pretty good at the time! Inside, I was laughing as well, as I think G was oblivious to how that comment came across. Teenagers!

Boy girl twins.

strangers: “are they identical?”

🙄

Oh the twin comments are fabulous. I have non identical girls. Comments I have had-
They look very close in age.
How do you tell them apart.
I know what you must be going through I have got irish twins.

HangryBrickShark · 08/01/2026 13:31

Clumsy but a compliment. Have you tried alpha h liquid gold or ketsugo gel? If not, give them a go as they might help.

Comes on thread to replicate the behaviour of which the OP (entirely reasonably) had complained.

Beggars belief, really.

NewYorkNewYork24 · 08/01/2026 13:50

Having a scan done for fertility checks - the one where your legs are in stirrups and they put dye in you and scan to make sure it flows through.

Assistant nurse says ‘I know it’s not very dignified is it, do you have kids?’

Wouldn’t be laying like this with my fanny out a massive light being shined in if I did!

Soberinthecity · 08/01/2026 14:22

“ I’d look massive in that” my much thinner-than-me friend saying to me wearing a dress I had tried on in a shop

Laurmolonlabe · 08/01/2026 15:05

Some people are just incredibly insensitive and other people (like the priest ) have vile views that no loving god would sanction. Sorry for your loss, and sorry you met people that are a complete waste of resources.

Grammarninja · 08/01/2026 15:10

I've, luckily enough, never suffered with acne but people often say I'm like a different person when I've no makeup on. I'm very fair and my skin is blotchy so you can imagine what foundation, eyeliner and mascara can do for me! I've been told I can go from a 3 to an 8 with a few products. It's pretty hard to step out the door with just a bit of moisturiser with these comments on board, though I do on a daily basis! 🤣

Mcdhotchoc · 05/01/2026 22:50

My next door neighbour
"I really admire the way you don't care about how you look."
Thanks Jane

I really take this as a compliment. It means they envy that you don't care ie. you have the confidence not to be a slave to nonsense! That's where I'm trying to get to!

That's a figure-type sort of comment, I think. My much heavier friend can pull off hour-glass dresses that flatter her and shave off stones whereas I'd look stones heavier in the same style.

Yes I did try to delete the post after I wrote it knowing there would be some sanctimonious person like you come along. I've reflected and am deeply sorry for my post and wish I had not posted in the first place.

Edited

I don't think it's sanctimonious to express dislike of a tactless and unnecessary post.

HungrySquirrel · 08/01/2026 16:28

My 9 yr old DS has recently been diagnosed with a heart condition. Someone at work asked me about the operation he is waiting for and what the odds were that it would work. I answered her very optimistically only for her to then say oh I guess he’ll end up on heart transplant register. Not what I need to hear. I went home and cried.

paulhollywoodshairgel · 08/01/2026 16:28

I suffer with horrendous mental health issues. It literally rules my whole life. I barely leave the house. One time I felt well enough to go for a wander round the local shops. Saw someone I know. She went around telling everyone that I was better now as she’d seen me out. If she’s out she must be cured sort of thing. Not how it works I’m afraid!!

Unless you are actually American “Dumb Shit” ruins my day as I hate the sheep like copying of American expressions.

@Sweetiedarling7 the phrase "oh dear, how sad, never mind" springs to mind 😂

See also: “Hi, other school parent, I’m MassiveBackstory. I’ve got two who have just started in Year 2.”

“Oh that’s nice, are they twins?”

🤔

Ok but tbf, I do actually know two brothers in the same school year who are not twins. They are 11 months apart in age. One born in September, one born in August.
It's unusual, but it can occasionally work out that way.
