I eat in a local restaurant weekly after work, so I typically go in with no makeup on. I am 35 and suffering with really painful cystic acne. Tried everything, my face is a mess.

Anyway, I go in on New Year’s Eve fully made up in makeup. The owners wife turns to me and says, wow, I didn’t even recognise you with makeup on, you look so much better with makeup on. After seeing I was embarassed and me mumbling ahh I suffer with my skin she stands and lists all the things allergy, hormones, everything as though to help. Yet making me feel worse and more of a spectacle. What she was saying is. God you look dog rough when I see you in the week. You should continue to paint your face to hide the offensive marks. I didn’t fucking appreciate it. Not one bit.

So got me thinking. What dumb shit have people said to you that ruined your day?

Ooh twins. Are they natural?

Aged 39 and pregnant with my first an obstetrician/gynaecologist stated that I "presumably had help with this", meaning I couldn't possibly be pregnant at my advanced age without fertility treatment. I said "well, my husband was involved..."

Red hair runs in my family and I'm absolutely gutted that a)I don't have it and b) neither of my children have it. Ginger hair is gorgeous!

I don't think women really get as much stick as men for being ginger. Not sure why.

Brilliant answer! I take my hat off to you!

“oh you’re having twins?! I would have shot my self in the head if I were having twins!”

”My Nan was a twin, her twin died at birth” (told to me as I was an anxious mess during my high risk twin pregnancy)

Heyhoitsme · 07/01/2026 18:01

When I was heavily pregnant I was entering a restaurant with two people i didn't know well. The woman shouted "wide load coming through". She had no children at the time. I wonder if she reflected on her behaviour when she went on to have them.

I found out when my daughter was 6 days old i needed to have a prophylactic mastectomy. I had established BF so asked consultant the maximum period i could hold off surgery to continue to feed and they agreed to 4.5 months but needed to be done urgently thereafter. I went to see the HV at 4 months and explained the whole situation and to get advice on weaning onto a bottle - her exact words ‘well what a shame you wont breastfeed until 6 months as we do recommend BF exclusively until then & we dont give advice on bottles’ this was almost 14 years ago and to this day i dont know how i did collapse on the floor in floods of tears, i left the clinic visibly shaken

3 months after my lovely husband died of a heart attack i was at friends daughters gender reveal party. Known him over 40 years been at many family parties with my husband and children. His mum turned to me and said ..oh I hear whats it died, are you over it now?. I was speechless and just walked away. People have said many dumb things to me about him over the last year but that was the worst.

Cantfindausernameforgodssake · 07/01/2026 18:15

My dad today said my eldest daughter was 'granny raised' I said my mum had her one day a week when I went back to work !! Anyway, it annoyed me because they refused to help at all when I had my second child which was fine but don't pretend you raised my kids I went without and did it myself.

Snoringdogsfarting · 07/01/2026 18:23

4 weeks after having my DD someone asked me when the baby was due. I said I’d already had it and they informed me I still looked pregnant 🤦🏽‍♀️

I was holding my newborn identical twin daughters when a man who I didn’t know (was a friend of a friend) told me how he always had a fantasy of a threesome with twins!

Fuck me, there's a hard drive that needs checked.

Someone recently told me their forehead would look like mine if they didn't have botox. 😆

“Are you male?” Said to me, a biological female, in the women’s toilets last week. I wasn’t looking particularly feminine that day but that’s not really the point. Fuck off and let me pee in androgynous peace.

Gosh, how rude

Goingbonkers247 · 07/01/2026 18:38

oh how awful. Don't let her drag you down.
I had Thyroid surgery to remove a lump they thought was cancer, thankfully it was not cancer and I caught Pneumonia from the surgery. On my first day back in the office the first person I saw noticed my neck wound and said oh how disgusting, you should cover that so we can't see it. It's making me feel sick. I didn't even know what to say so just went to my desk, fuming.

Wbeezer · 07/01/2026 18:41

I was at the dentist ( big NHS practice in a rather deprived town a few miles from where I live), discussed my treatment options with the dentist who proceeded to poke around in my mouth. Dental nurse pipes up to ask me what I do for a living, always a bit of an awkward question trying to explain my patchy portfolio career without oversharing various life ups and downs. When I tell her my practical non professional part time job ( that I enjoy ) she is surprised - “ oh I didn’t expect you to say that, you seemed very intelligent when talking to the dentist, we don’t get a lot of that round here”
Not sure whether to be more offended on behalf of myself or the local residents I could only splutter that “ I come from a family of doctors. “ which seemed to satisfy her but made me cringe afterwards.
Kept thinking of better ripostes all the way home.

I had that 1 year on. was in Primark and saw one of the ladies who had her baby at the same time in the hospital and she said oh expecting another ?and I said no it has not gone down. and she said oh you should get that looked at, it could be a tumor. Turns out I have diastasis recti. at least it made me go and get it checked but was upset for the rest of the day.

katseyes7 · 07/01/2026 18:46

I had cystic acne when l was a teenager (50 years ago now, and there weren't the treatments then that there are are now).
It was bad, all over my cheeks, chin, and down my neck, and l was excruciatingly embarrassed about it.
My mother said "Well, you don't take after me. I've never had a spot in my life...."

Fairfatandforty · 07/01/2026 18:47

Talking with my bosses mum. She was tiny saying she wished she could put on weight (genuinely) I'm VERY large, and said 'you could have some of mine!' Her comment 'aww, it's such a shame - you've got a beautiful face ' 🤣🤣🤣

Serenesage · 07/01/2026 18:48

So sorry this happened she is a tactless idiot. Can I recommend something to you? A company that may really help you (promise I don’t work for them or anything!!) it’s called face the future… they have an app or just use their website, have a look around it and see what you think. There you can book an online consultation with one of their dermatologists for £25. Then that money is given back to you to spend in a voucher on any products that may have been advised or that you want to try. They have really helped a fair few ladies! That would make me self conscious, keep your chin up, hold your head high, your skin most likely can be treated, shame her personality can’t be!! X

Coastgirl22 · 07/01/2026 18:48

My DH died suddenly - took my teenage DD’s shopping for funeral clothes - school mum I hardly knew made a beeline - ‘how did he die’ - sorry we’re not in the right place to discuss this now’ - ‘well it was sudden wasn’t it so how did he die?
hysterically sobbing girls now - ‘girls how did he die, I’ve been told you were there, what happened….
Fiona can I politely ask you to fuck off……

I have put on loads of weight in the past few years due to a binge eating disorder and most of it is around my tummy because I am apple shaped.

Someone said to me a few years back 'Oh! When are you due?'. In a moment of collection that I am still proud of I smiled and said '13 years ago'.

I am still proud of that answer.

I've always had fine hair, but it's got a lot thinner since the menopause. I now have some baldish patches at the front/top.
I went away with a group I worked with a few years ago and shared a room with one of them. Everyone there knew I wore a wig occasionally, especially for the work we do. I'd worn it all day and was fed up of it, so took it off and took it back to our room. My colleague was in there reading, looked up and said "Oh God yes, I can see why you wear a wig!"
I said thanks for that, then she went on to point out how thin my hair was etc. To the point I walked out and went back to the lounge area.
Some people have absolutely no thought at all. She'd already upset a few of us with her no filter mouth, thankfully she left early with some excuse!

Laurmolonlabe · 07/01/2026 19:02

Try washing your face with surgical scrub (Betadine, from the pharmacy). I had problems with acne for nearly 30 years, I saw several dermatologists and this is the only suggestion that helped.

TheOliveFinch · 07/01/2026 19:14

@localnotail , giving two of your children the same name is very unlikely however George Foreman the boxer had five sons all called George and one of his daughter’s he called Georgetta 😂

I don't think it is unfair to say that being of normal size is more attractive than being obese. Would 'more attractive' be better wording? FYI would say the same about someone who was underweight gaining weight.

I’d say it’s subjective, and also think it’d be fair to say they look healthier, rather than bringing attractiveness into it at all.
