Made the lasagna without the lasagna

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:26

What to do?

Just prepped for dinner, did all the mince with tomatoes, onion etc and made the cheese sauce, boiled some potatoes and went to get the lasagna sheets and don’t have any.
Not feeling 100% so cba going to the shops, how can I make it into a proper meal? I have some pasta I could use instead, but what about the potatoes? Save them for tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

Leafy greens…? It’s not summer!

We live in a county which imports food, and uses hot houses. I can get broccoli and spinach no problem today - both leafy greens, along with many many others.

You need a leafy green with a heavy pasta dish!

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 14:04

But I don’t want to waste them

Put them in the fridge for tomorrow..

If you have pasta the pots are surplus and can be used in another dish.

AhBiscuits · 05/01/2026 14:05

Do you have tortilla wraps? They work in place of lasagna.

If you would eat potatoes as a side to lasagne, why can't you just eat them as a side to a pasta bake? It's the same thing, just a different shape pasta!

Seems weird

Freeze the spuds for another day. I freeze leftover mash all the time.

topsecretcyclist · 05/01/2026 14:06

Use another pasta shape and have a pasta bake. What shapes do you have? I guess it doesn't matter, you can mix and match and make it your own invention.

wishingonastar101 · 05/01/2026 14:07

potatoes and lasagna? that's wild...

Leafy greens…? It’s not summer!

We eat leafy greens all year (cabbage, kaie, sprouts etc)

Not sure why so many people are aghast at the potato side. Loads of folk have chips with lasagne. Id much prefer new potatoes boiled with butter on them to chips .

I was making in advance as not feeling 100% and basically cba later and want to go to bed when Dh home

But of all the things to make in advance, boiled potatoes seems the most pointless one. You'll have to reheat them which will basically take just as long as making them in the first place?

Should i pour the bechamel over the mash?

I‘d add cheese to the Béchamel, put it over the mince layer and and then do the mashed potato layer on top. Reserving a little cheese sauce for the top, but not too much to make it soggy.

RessicaJabbit · 05/01/2026 14:08

just serve the meat mixture on its own - use the bechamel with the potatoes an then grill them for some sot of cheesy potatos... and eat it.

theres no need to over think this.

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 14:04

But I don’t want to waste them

So put them in the fridge for tomorrow, use them instead of the lasagne sheets, serve them as a side to cheesy mince or serve them with the pasta (unusual, but what you were planning on doing anyway). Those are your options. You have lots of them.

Is this a windup? Or do you have set ‘ways’ of doing/having food and find any deviation confusing? As none of this is at all difficult to figure out.

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:57

I’m not going to chuck them though, hate wasting food
They’re really not bland with melted butter on and eaten with the mince and cheese in a lasagna-so good!

I didn’t suggest you chuck them, they were only ever a side - their plan hasn’t changed. Why do you now need to do something differently with them?

And yes, they sound super bland, nothing wrong with that if you like them though!

But I don’t want to waste them

Sautee them or roast them, and use the pasta you have to make pastitsio instead. It is basically a Greek version of lasagne except they use penne instead of lasagne sheets.

Minjou · 05/01/2026 14:05

People eat lasagna and chips all.the time.

Yes, but rarely pasta-free lasagne with stodgy boiled-at-lunch-time potatoes.

OP Mash the potato and freeze it.
freeze the bechamel too.

cook normal pasta twirls/shells and use that and have spag bol type pasta bake instead.

Umy15r03lcha1 · 05/01/2026 14:09

Do you have any pasta of any kind in the house?

But lasagne and potatoes is not? Only other pasta shapes?

This thread has now jumped the shark for me.

ZZGirl · 05/01/2026 14:10

Freeze the potatoes

SoSoLong · 05/01/2026 14:10

Flour and a couple of eggs is all you need to make some lasagne sheets, if you can be bothered.

This is such a weird topic for a wind-up thread 😂

Faceonthewrongfoot · 05/01/2026 14:11

This all feels very Balonz. Someone just throwing in a random surprise element as if its normal and every day. "I'm making a lasagne, I've got my meat sauce, got the bechemal, just finished boiling the potatoes....."

So the shape of the pasta makes it acceptable to you to eat with potatoes? That's fascinatingly niche.

Why not cut the potatoes into chips, fry them and add the meat mixture to the top. Dirty fries.

Not the same as sheets

It would be if you took out a masher and mashed it.
